After reading your story it sounds so familiar, reason being is because I receive these types of calls every few months. I was even told one time that the FBI will come to my job or home to arrest me, I laughed at the guy and told him make sure to give them the correct address then hung up the phone. Don't let them bully you into paying for something you don't owe. In no way, shape or form will defaulting on a payday loan ever be considered fraud.

I start receiving these types of calls about 4 years ago, the person always threaten to send someone to my home and job to serve me papers. Well needless to say I don't scare easily, therefore I told them do what they have to do. By law they cannot and will not send you to jail for a defaulting on a payday loan. At the age of 38 I've had my share of payday loans and have defaulted on a couple, never once have I ever went to jail, although it did appear on my credit report because they reported the nonpayment to the credit bureau.

This is all a scam please don't let them or anyone else calling intimidate you to give them money, rather if you owe it or not. If they say your freedom is at risk, contact your local authorities or legal aid for assistance. Last August I received the exact same phone call, they even contacted my family (my aunt called me terrified believing I was in trouble). But as mentioned before "I DON'T SCARE EASILY". Therefore I contacted the company, informed them that I don't owe any money and if they contact me or family ever again I will contact my attorney and file proper charges. I don't have an attorney nor can I afford one, however they don't know that, but they never contacted me again. Their whole scam is to get money out of as money people as possible.

One more thing I should mention, these scam artist somehow are able to get your personal information from payday loan companies from which you have borrowed from in the past. I obtained this information from a company which I conducted business in the past. The first time I received a call from one of the scam artist, they claim to represent that particular company; therefore I call and gave them a piece of my mind because the loan had been paid in full 2 years prior. That's when I was informed their customer database had  been compromised by a third party several months prior. However I was never properly informed of this, but that's another story for a different day.

If you have made payment arrangements with these scammers; cancel your credit or debit card, whichever one you agreed to make payments with, because they will take all the money they can from you. In addition, if they have your checking account info, I strongly suggest closing that account and open another one. Please also keep in mind, this may not be the last time you will hear from these people, I wouldn't be surprised if you received another call within 6 months or so (i've been getting these calls every few months for 4 years).

Last but not least, when you tell these people you don't owe them or you are not paying them, they will ask you to verify your social security number DON'T DO IT.  Although they may have the last 4 digits of your number, trust me, they do not have your entire number unless you give it to them. Don't verify any personal information at all to anyone, anytime whom which you never initiated the call or are not currently conducting business with.

I understand you may be scared and you don't know me from the man in the moon, but please believe me when I tell you this is a scam and you can never go to jail for defaulting on a payday loan. You will not be forced to go to court unless the company wants to garnish your wages; if this is the case proper documents will be sent in the mail from your local courts and no one will call to threaten you. I know this because 6 years ago my wages were garnished from a local payday loan company.  Bottom line, don't pay these scammers anything at any time, and contact local authorities or legal aid for help if you are truly intimidated by these individuals.
