I had to make a trip to Niagara Falls, N.Y. to discuss the arrangements of my brother,s funeral, only to find out that his interment in Arlington National Cemetery would not occur until July 20th.

On my return trip to Baton Rouge, LA., during my layover at the Memphis Airport, I was informed of a change in the plane size. It went from a 50 passenger to a 24 passenger plane. The ticket agent asked for volunteers to turn their ticket in, as the plane was overbooked. In exchange for your ticket, you would receive a free ticket to use anywhere in the U.S. and Canada anytime up to one year.

I verified that the ticket would be good anytime and would have no problem booking a flight to Virginia for the burial, before I agreed to give up my seat. The ticket agent said "No problem don't worry about it" affirming that the ticket would be good.

When I tried to make my reservation after returning home, I had a seat until I told them I had a free ticket, then there was no seat. I made more than one call to Northwest, and was given the same answer.

My final call was to supervisor, Mrs. Crites in Tampa Flordia on Friday July 2nd. She said Northwest used a tiered system. Booking 1st class first, then coach then down to free tickets accoding to available seats on the flight. I told her what the ticket agent in Memphis said about not having any problems booking my flight, and she replied that ticket agents will say anything to get you out of their face. I said in other words my ticket is no good. She said "that's right, not for this flight" Now I'm going to miss my brother's burial.

In my expierence it is best to take the voucher that has a dollar amount -v- the free ticket...it is on a limited basis, and subject to availabilty (in that fine print of course.) If you find yourself in that situation though, there are Medical/Brevement fares set up for your circumstances where one has to book within 3 days of travel.
