I was widowed in late November of 1999. I panicked, sold my home fearing I could no longer afford it. Three months later, on Feb 22, 2000, I purchased a home from Oakwood. The home was priced at $39K, I put down $12,500 and still owe $47K 3 yrs later after paying approx $400.00 each month. I selected carpeting, colors, tile and floor plans. I got a call from the salesman telling me he had located an identical unit on the lot in Phx, which they could deliver immediately. When it arrived, I was unable to get inside until it had received a final inspection. I was suprised as hell!! Nothing in it was what I had ordered. It was the beginning of a nightmare that still hasn't ended. I ordered a unit with gas to enable me to use my existing applicances and this one was all electric. It came without a dishwasher or disposal and when they had them installed they were done incorrectly. Looks lousy! My deal included a so-called Park Pkg, dual awnings, shed and landscaping, steps, skirting etc. The shed cost me an additonal $800 and the landscaping another $500. The drip system is still messed up and plants were skipped. The awnings leak over both front and rear doors and one gets wet during rain when going in or out. Nice! Oakwood told me the company who they contracted to do them had gone out of business and nothing could be done. The trim on the outside was not painted and when I called on this, someone delivered me a gallon of paint with instructions to get one of my kids to do the painting. The walls have glue everywhere which nothing will remove. Through-out the entire house is a chair rail on the walls, not just the kitchen. When the Gen Mrg came out to inspect, he was thrilled and told me when he was told the walls were all bowed from sitting in the heat it was his suggestion. His happiness was that this solution appeared to work, of course it looks odd and I get questions from visitors. The two outside bedroom walls were bowed badly, several inches. When I showed it to the service people I was told if I wanted to move the king sized bedroom myself they would try to fix it but they didn't move furniture and there really wasn't much they could do anyway. I found out a few months ago that some of my down payment went to them to prepay insurance and extended warranties on the home. Seems its expired and is now costing me an additonal $60 monthly. As a 67 year old widow on a limited and fixed income, I am forced to sell the house. I expect I will lose a lot of my investment, not that it matters to Oakwood. They fired the GM and salesperson I worked with and none of the new people were able to find my paperwork for any complaints or consultation. I guess it's how Oakwood resolves its customer complaints. I could go on and on my daughter made at least 10 personal visits to the sales lot on my behalf to no avail. I probably made 100 phone calls and wrote several letters, even certified. Having spent all my money on the house, I didn't have money to hire an attorney and pursue this. It is my opinion that they took advantage of an elderly widow in a time of sorrow and I hope no one does it to their mothers. When I find a buyer for my home I will reccommend they seek financing elsewhere and not deal with Oakwood! Charlotte TUCSON, Arizona
