Let me begin by saying that Office Depot ads are deliberately meant to deceive you to get you into the store. That is not why I am writing, because many ads by many companies do the same to get your attention, and it is not illegal.

I am writing because of actual false advertising. Earlier this year, I was shopping for tax software. I was scanning the Sunday paper ad inserts and Office Depot's got my attention. It promised rebates and lots of free merchandise with the purchase of TurboTax software. I am a savvy consumer; I read the fine print.

I understood that three of the free items were free after mail-in rebates. Still, it listed other merchandise that were simply free on-the-spot. Everything looked fine so I went to my local Office Depot in Glen Burnie, MD. With the help of a manager, I found the software and "free" merchandise specified in the ad. Upon paying at the register, I found that the ad was a complete LIE--I won't even use the word "misleading."

The purchase price (before rebate) of one of the other "free" software listed was higher, and besides a measly $3 calculator, the other "free" item listed and pictured in the ad (rewritable CD-ROMs)wasn't free at all.

A manager came to try to fix the problem. Even the manager interpreted the ad the way I did, but since the register computer wouldn't allow the "free" item (there was no "code"), he wasn't about to give it to me. He just sort of shrugged his shoulders and basically said something weasly that really meant nothing.

There were more details to the story that made me really angry, but I admit I don't remember the exact details. It was enough for me to immediately demand a refund of all my money and walk out to purchase the same software at Staples instead, and to contact the Better Business Bureau.

Unfortunately, due to bigger things going on in my life, I never got around to contacting the Better Business Bureau. I just now came across this site in researching another company, so I am now posting this report a few months after the incident.
