I am the assistant manager at Palmetto Studios and I am aware of this incident. I am personally confused about a few things. First of all, we have the right to charge whatever we wish for a product. The table in question has always been that price. We DO sell them along with many other fine products. Stores such as JC Penney buy merchandise in huge amounts thereby receiving deeper discounts on there wholesale prices. We are a small locally owned business and do not get the same advantage. Secondly, I cannot understand how you can break an item and NOT expect to pay for it. We have to pay for that item and then take a loss on the future sale also. I don't know where you worked in retail, but I doubt it was for a small privately owned company. Lastly, who are you to chastise anyone about "rip offs" when you yourself were going to sell the broken merchandise on e-bay?? You were also trying to charge more than the supposed JC Penney price! What kind of message are you sending your child that it is fine to break things that belong to someone else and not take responsibility for it? Our owner settled with you for such a small amount only because he is a very nice man. The girl who was working that day was only following the company policy which is posted in our store. I resent your inference that the items in our store are "junk". We are very choosy about the companies we deal with and since much of our merchandise is contemporary it only stands to reason that some things would be made of plastic. You should think twice about making such inflamatory comments without a basis to back it up with. And in the future you should probably keep a better eye on your child while shopping. The next store owner may not be as kind as ours.

After doing research as to who is responsible for broken merchandise, I found out I am not even responsible. We called the owner and settled on returning the table and paying him $25 to help him cover his loss. which is more than we had to do, but like I said, I was trying to do what was right. He ended up saying his cost was actually $69. I found the same table on JCPenny.com for $49. Anyway, it is over and I will never return to that store again!
