I just have a few suggestions to just about every one of the posts on this site...BEFORE YOU OPEN A CREDIT CARD ACCOUNT, YOU REALLY NEED TO READ....and here is the big on ....UNDERSTAND!!! Almost every single issue brought up, is very clearly written in the cardholders agreement that every single cardholder gets with their credit card. In general, I'm going to give you some hints on how to avoid almost every single problem that has ever been logged on this site. 1-Pay your bill on-time. If you mail in your payment, do it 7-10 days before your due date. Btw, I do not recommend mailing in a payment. I hear people complain about "identity theft" or "stealing their checking info"--what about people that steal those things out of envelopes...there are those people too, you know. The absolute best way pay your bill and make sure it is there with absolutely no realistic problems is to MoneyGram or WesternUnion. Yes it costs money, but it is guaranteed to be there. 2nd choice--Debit card in your name. Not your husbands name, not your dad's name, not H&R Block, not your boy-friends sisters dad's best friend. Your checking account. If you do this, the day before your due date, you will never, ever have a problem with paying, and not having the funds available. There, there are your 2 payment options. Any other method may cause problems--ie. late fees, 3rd party check blocks, returned check fees(nsf or bad acct#),collection calls, ect. 2-Read the website, the card-holders agreement, when you call to activate your card, ask them every single ? that you can think of. If you don't know how a credit card works, google it first, read that, then call in with any other ?'s. They will answer every one of your ?'s to the best of their ability. Because, chances are, they also work collections. They would rather explain it to you now, than have to get yelled at by you in 2 months, because you are past due and don't understand why. 3-Going into this card, you need to realize that the reason we, and I say we, cause I have bad credit, is because we have proven, by whatever means, that we are not very good at paying back debts. The bank is taking a big risk on themselves by even extending the $50 available credit to us to begin with. 4-Collectors are not always going to be nice. If someone you know, even a friend, owes you money, you aren't always nice about it are you? They get paid by their company because they are very good at their jobs. Don't complain to a collector about not having good "customer service" skills, because I guarantee they are also very good customer service reps. But remember, for whatever reason, you are past due on a bill that you agreed to pay, they have a right to not believe us, they have a right to ask what day we get paid, they have a right to ask what day your wife gets paid, they have a right to ask if your parents can help, they have every right to be not very nice sometimes. Not all collectors are like that, it takes all kinds. 5-If you don't like the fact that they can't talk to your spouse unless you are past due or that we can't talk to your mother without your permission or that you have to write a letter telling us not to call you or a complaint about anything we do, you really need to discuss these things with your congressman or your governor, because I promise you, these companies are not breaking any laws. 6-Realize that these companies are also providing a service to you as well, we have this card, because we have bad credit, they report monthly to the credit bureau's. Now, this doesn't mean that only having this card will "magically repair" your credit. You need to also take care of all other blemish's on your credit report, no matter how old. Remember, you are proving to other creditor's--car loans, morgagers, low-interest credit cards, that you are working to repair old debts and handling your current accounts responsibly. Really it all boils down to that...If you read and understand everything, and realize why this is the only credit card you qualify for, you will rarely have an issue with these accounts.
