Just received a collection letter from Credit Collection Services trying to collect on an old insurance policy.  The policy was from Progressive Insurance from 6/2007.  My wife and I did business with progressive from 2004 till 2012 then we decided to cancel with them and go with a home town company for our auto insurance needs.

Now after doing business with Progressive for over 5 years and then another year after we cancelled, they pull an old ploicy out of their hat that we used to have and try to collect on something that is over 6 years old.  In my opinion this is a low down dirty scheme to generate additional revenue and also to punish people for not renewing their insurance with Progressive.  As many of you know, not only is your auto insurance premium calculated by your driving record but also buy your credit score. This is akin to extortion, since this company can ruin your credit causing you to pay more for insurance in the future but higher interest rates on any other credit that one may be able to obtain with this on your credit record.

Our policies with progressive were always pay in advance and if payment was not made by the policy due date then it was automatically cancelled with no penalty or balance due.  So how does one owe for something on which there was never any service extended beyond the due date?

This is what happens when government forces to buy a service under penlty of law and the arrogant Insurance industry that has resulted from this.  Beware doing any business with this cut throat company!!!

Provide proof you had insurance...

All you have to do is provide Progressive with proof you had insurance during the period for which they are trying to bill you.  If you didn't keep the declaration page from that timp period from your current insurance company, they can look it up and send you a copy.  It's that simple.
