My experience with Public Storage started out Sept 09...long story short..I fell behind on my payments and my unit was auctioned off in January 2010 when I was in drug and alcohol rehab. I accept full responsibility that I got behind and they did what they felt they had to do...trust me..I beat myself up daily over this..whoever bought my unit got about $10,000 worth of belongings for $490.00 a real deal...my past due amount was $326.00..my problems began with them when I recieved a bill from them 3 weeks ago in the amount of $326.00..I did a little investing when I recently got out of treatment (90 day in patient) I contacted customer service via email and was informed

Dear Mrs. XXX

Thank you for contacting Public Storage in regards to your refund. A check was sent out for the excess proceeds in Feb in the amount of $66.06 and was returned. Please send an updated address and we will resend your check. Please contact our customer service dept if you have any additional questions.

Kimberly S customer service representative.

In the mean while, I did some checking and spoke with my ex husband who is an attorney and he informed me that the owner..Public Storage subject to RCW 191.50.090 and RCW 191.50.100 may sell the property... OTHER THAN "personal papers and personal effects"...the law states that personal effects are  "Things which include clothes, cosmetics and items of adornment".  When I called the customer service rep today to ask about the refund check and my "personal effects" I was told....no check was sent out to me..that I needed to write to them requesting the refund and wait 4 weeks for it to process and that it is common for PS to auction items to thrift shops who don't go through the boxes to sort out personal property and more than likely my things were shredded/thrown out and sold.

Pretty sad today...I have contacted the State Attorney Generals office..the BBB and our local consumer advocate Jesse Jones from KING5 TV.

I'm disgusted that the customer service rep who emailed me flat out lied..the one I spoke with on the phone was so insensitive...these people are awful..even after the fact, and I will spend the rest of eternity discouraging anyone and everyone from ever falling behind on storage unit payments..and certainly..don't ever do business with Public Storage.

How funny that the Public Storage employees told me the same thing, almost word for word.  To this day, it's now been over a year, I have never received any of my personal items back, or my refund check.  Best wishes to you on staying clean and sober.
