I have a complaint about my experience with Qatar AirwaysOn 8-Jul-10, I traveled with a friend to Bali, Indonesia from Doha, Qatar via Qatar Airways, Flight 638.  The representative behind the counter collected our passports, weighed our luggage, and printed our boarding passes.  Never was I told that my luggage was overweight or asked to pay any fees.

We stayed in Bali, Indonesia for two weeks.  On 22-Jul-10, we were scheduled to fly back to Doha, Qatar via Qatar Airways, Flight 639.  As we were checking in our luggage, it was brought to my attention that my luggage was severely overweight.  I was told that my luggage totaled 40 kgs and that as an Economy passenger I was only allotted 20 kgs and would have to pay for the excess.  I was quoted an amount of $784.  That was almost the amount of my airline ticket! Of course, I became upset.  I know for a fact that I did not accumulate an excess 20 kgs worth of merchandise while in Bali.  Why all of the sudden was I being charged?  Why was nothing said in Qatar?  I knew no one in Bali that could assist me or mail my luggage to me, and since our flight was so late in the evening, all the post offices were closed.  I was put into a very difficult position and eventually sent my excess luggage as air cargo instead, but it still cost me $370.

My complaint is this: why was nothing said in Qatar where I could have made arrangements to have the excess luggage handled?  Why was I only told that my luggage was in excess when I was trying to exit Bali?  If one airport is going to enforce the strict luggage restrictions then they all should, especially the home port for Qatar Airways - the Qatar airport!  I sent several emails to Qatar Airways about the complaint but was told that the restrictions would hold, basically I should have known better, and that even though they were sorry for my inconvenience, they would not do anything to help me.

When I collected my bag from a company called Air General located at the Houston International Airport (IAH), I was charged an additional $70 in fees.  I also discovered several items to be missing out of the bag. There was no way to prove which company broke the lock, went through my belongings and either took those items or forgot to put them back in the bag so I was told it was my word against theirs. Also, there was a cockroach in my bag & the condition of other items inside were soiled by some unknown substance and had to be thrown away.

"If one airport is going to enforce the strict luggage restrictions then they all should"

Are you really complaining that the airline didn't charge you for excess weight on both flights instead of just the return flight?

This has nothing to do with the airlines.

I had the same thing happen when I was passing through China.  They re-weighed my luggage and had their own weight limits.  Also, Saudi Arabia.  Since weight limits are for exiting the country not entering, they can change at the whim of the local customs and the airline may not know of it.

Also, sometimes these third world countries are just taking advantage of foriegn travellers because they know there is nothing you can do about it.
