Signed up for Regal Crown Club card to earn points for food, movies, etc. Earned enough points which supposedly gave me a "free movie." Tried to use that free movie ticket this past weekend only to be told it could not be used on a new release??? My free ticket mentions nothing about not being able to use the free movie ticket for a new release. This Regal Crown Club is nothing but a total rip off and scam.

I would like to respond to a few errors that were mentioned in the complained. First, if you read the ticket it clearly states that the free movie is not valid for 3d, IMAX, RPX, special attractions, or films that are no pass engagements. This is stated in the middle of the coupon almost directly below the words Free Movie Ticket. Second, it was a little misleading when you stated that you were unable to use it because it was a new movie. Not all new films are restricted. For example, last weekend Contagion, Warrior, and Creature all opened with Contagion being the only restricted movie of the three.

When a movie is restricted it is something that is dictated by the studio that is releasing the movie. If a movie is restricted at Regal it is also restricted at every other theater, no matter what company they are owned by. To avoid this happening in the future check if a movie is restricted before heading to the show. It is clearly marked in the newspaper, online (Fandango being the best site to check because they are the only online site that pulls the schedule and info directly from each movie theater), and on the theaters recording. You can also call the theater directly and speak to a manager. The direct line should be mentioned near the beginning of each recording.

"This Regal Crown Club is nothing but a total rip off and scam."  This was such a hilarious line, I had to take a moment to respond.  Audiofish pretty much brought it to light and all the "exclusions" are written on the loyalty pass that is printed.  Those restrictions are usually for the first 14 days of a new release feature.

I personally do not find a "free" loyalty program which rewards the patron with a free drink, popcorn and movie ticket as a scam.  With every 50 points earned--you receive a reward.  I'm surprised we didn't see a complaint prior to receiving a "free movie ticket" as this is in the third reward tier (50pts = SM Popcorn, 100pts = SM Drink, 150pts = Movie Pass); therefore I assume NiceSmile4U enjoyed the free small popcorn and free small drink without complaints.  Don't forget the added benefits of $2 Candy on Monday and $2 Popcorn on Tuesday (some scam, ehh?).

With the report filed by NiceSmile4U, I'm almost certain a scene was caused at the Box Office.

#4Consumer Suggestion

I have no connection to Regal except for the fact that, like yourself, I am a Crown Club member.

Having said that, you ignorant moron.  I have a headache because of you.  First of all, as a cardholder of any program--whether it be a credit card or a rewards program (like the Crown Club)--you are bound to the terms and conditions of that program.  You probably know this, right?  I hope...  Well,  I suggest you visit their website for a complete list of the terms and conditions, read them, and understand them.  Knowing is half the battle--understanding is completely different.

Second, next time you do get a free movie ticket, take the time to read *it* as well.  Because you'll see an entire paragraph on it, with what the free ticket cannot be used for.  It excludes (yes, that's an ex- in front of -cludes, meaning it's not valid for...) pass restricted features, 3D, IMAX, etc....  But you're probably too excited over spending an ungodly amount of money and wasting 2 hours of your pathetic life on a piece of crap movie to even notice it.  Like most other consumers who completely ignore fine print.  And that goes back to understanding terms and conditions, which we've already determined you fail at.

Here's another thing.  Movies come out all the time as some sort of special engagement or pass restricted.  Usually for the first couple weeks, and then the restriction (unless the movie's 3D) goes away.  Nothing new.  AMC has done it for over 20 years.  Regal's done it for as long they've been in business.  And I'm sure most, if not all major chains do it.  Why?  If I had to guess, it's about maximizing a new movie's gross potential over the first couple weeks.  And probably a behind-the-scenes business deal that exhibitors (Regal, AMC, etc...) make with the studios...a sort of discount for showing their movies as a special engagement.  Yes, exhibitors pay fees to the studios for showing their movies.  A fee that covers a lot of things from the cost of making that print (exhibitor lingo for "movie") to transportation, etc.  Anyways, go to their website and try to buy tickets.  Whatever site you get redirected to (Fandango?) will tell you what is or is not pass restricted.  Or check your local paper or see if they have a hotline to call.  Hell, call the theater and ask the box office.  They'll tell you.

So do yourself a favor (and anyone else who may be reading this, as well...) and follow the advice I've given you.  And you'll see just how stupid you sound.  Maybe a little surprised.
