April, 2007, my hot water heater sprung a leak. I called American Home Shield, (AHS), (another ripoff company) and they sent Rescue Rooter. When they looked at the unit, the person advised that I was not up-to-code. He could not replace my unit without bringing it completly current. However, before he could even give me a quote he had to replace my shut off valve since it was not code. He installed one 1/4 turn ball valve & I was charged $142.50. After he turned it on and gave me a quote, it would be another $1,200 just to bring us up-to-code. Then the cost for the new hot water heater and labor would be covered by AHS. AHS would not cover anything unless we were within code. Needless to say, I politely as I could, told him "no thanks". I called another plumber who I was familiar with, who did the entire replacement & code update for under $600. This week I have had my entire house re-piped due to aging Polybutylene and several leaks. When the tech replaced the feed to the hot water heater, he used normal valves. When I asked if they were code, he responded that the county would be here today to inspect his work, verify it with them.. I did, the Rescue Rooter person not only ripped me off, he lied to me. The tech, explained that he replaced the valve since the solder job was so shoddy that the valve & pipe connection was about to fall apart. He gave me the old piece and yup, the pipe came off the valve in my hand.

All of these AHS/ARS Rescue Rooter stories involve the same themes. Unnecessary work and lying.

We too called another plumber mid-repair (whose estimate for the basic fix was $400 - a full $2600 less than what they quoted).

Only thing was, their main lie wasn't revealed until they had jackhammered through our floor.

Our plumbing does *not* need to be replaced, housewide, after consulting two other reputable groups.  They did *not* need to break the floor to figure this out.
