R&L carriers picked up an 850 lb pallet with $60000.00 worth of sand rail transaxles and parts at my supplier in CA. On the way to Phx it "vanished". This would require a pallet jack or fork lift.

For weeks R&L refused to do anything. Then they began not taking calls or returning messages. Won't return Emails.

I got a tip that one of my transaxles was for sale on the black market,R&L sends police away! I finally file a claim, They offer $85. They clain that when I agreed to have them move my parts I agreed to .010 a pound. It doesn't say that on any document I signed. They purposely make that vague or no one would ship with them.

They have done everything to make sure they don't have to pay me for what they lost! This screams inside job!

Don't use them for anything. Tell your friends who use trucking companies. They do not pay for their mistakes!

They charged me $200 to steal my parts!

what is reasonable

I caught an R&L employee selling my parts 8 1/2 months after R&L refused to let the police take a look around or question dock workers.

Is it unreasonable to expect the company you hire to actually do what they were hired to do? The R&L dock was used to steal my parts. An R&L fork lift was used to load my parts onto an employies truck inside the supposed "secure" area.

Limits of liability are NOT a license to steal!!!

I run an automotive repair shop and if one of my enployees stole a customer car would it be "reasonable" to tell the customer sorry you should have paid extra for insurance? No, I carry insurance to cover customers stuff. Why is the trucking industry exempt from being responsible for their incompetence? If you hire a plumber to replace your hot water heater and he leaves a pipe leaking and it destroys your carpet it it "reasonable for him to say I'm not responsible I hope you bought extra insurance on your own because you knew I was coming to do this work?

Whether or not it is a common practice I would NEVER obstruct, ignore, hide from a customer, do everything I could to take no responsability for my mistake and make my customer bear the entire burden of me being unable to do the job I was hired to do.   But that's just me!

I wanted to let you know that every carrier in the US has a limited liablity clause. If they didn't they would need to charge you $1000 dollars or something crazy to cover that much liability. I don't think it is reasonable to expect to pay a couple hundred dollars for a shipment and the company be liable for $60,000. Carriers do offer full value insurance. It will cost you more up front but the total cost of your goods would be covered.
