Robert Collie rip-off corruption false promises lier Elizabeth City North Carolina
I rented from Robert(Robbie) C. Collie at the end of August 2002. It was a last resort situation. No one had moved into the apartments yet and they were defintley not finished. So he let me move in and even gave me 100 dollars off my deposit to help him get the place ready. I agreed. I painted and decorated the hole place. It was amazing to see the change from a once crack house to a comfy one bedroom apartment. I was really proud of it.
I am only 20 years old and had just moved from Florida. I didn't know anyone and my husband was not going to be around for awhile because he was stationed in a different area. I have never rented before so I was cluess on how everything works.
Robert Collie had promised me alot. New carpet, vinyl floors in the kitchen, washer and dryer hook up and a knew ceiling fan. The worst thing about it is that there was no heat yet in the Apartments. When it started to get cold we(neighbors) called him numerous times to ask him about the heat. He said that his son was going to be installing the heat. And in the mean time he went out and bought us some electric radiators. They were very cheap and it was hard to keep the heat in with no insalation at all.
He finally got the heat in beging of December. I then called him sick of having to freeze and got firm with him to ask him what I should do next about the gas. Who do I call? We got into an arguement and he told me I could move out today and have my deposit back. I said fine. His exuse always was "$375 you get what you pay for."
I called him Dec 23 2002 and told him we would be out JAN 1st. He said fine I need it in writing. I typed him a letter and gave him address to send the deposit to. A couple of days later recieved a letter from him with a thanking me for all of my work and a $275 dollar check. I deposited it to my new bank account here in NC. The bank called me on Monday saying he stopped payment on it.
I called him all week. NO answer. When he finally answered he said his wife wrote the check and had no clue. She then called me to give me a exuse about the gas heating bill which was a half tank full that HE had the gas company put in. I didn't. I never asked him to do that.
And then his wife said I never gave anough noticed. I paid for that hole month and gave him 2 weeks to find a new tenant. He is a lier and back staber. I would not recommend anyone renting from him. I not only had to replace that money but also 10 return checking fee. On a check that I didn't write.
