On 09-18-2002 a 1988 Jaguar XJS was taken to Rudy's Jaguar for service. The service performed was a "valve job." Engine was taken apart, cleaned, replaced gaskets and seals, and put engine back together.

Car was taken out of the shop after work was completed. Short time after i notice the car had oil leaks, exhaust leaks, smelt of burning oil. I informed Rudy of this, his reply was "it needs to be driven and needs an oil change."

I drove the car more often on longer trips and the problem became worse. I brought the car back again. Rudy told me the secondary oil pan gasket needs to be replaced.

After paying for the secondary oil pan gasket I get the car back from the shop. He tells me the oil leaks are gone and there are no more ehaust leaks. I drive the car for a short time when I notice the car has oil leaks and ehaust leaks once again.

I bring the car back to Rudy again. He tells me the primary oil pan gasket needs to be replaced. He charges me for the primary oil pan gasket and i get the car back.

He says there are no problems with the car and it needs to be driven. I drive the car to San Diego and on my way it breaks down. I bring it to Rudy and he tells me that I didnt tell him to replace a part that i didnt know existed. I told him in the begining I wanted this car as a daily driver and needed the car in top running condition, that was the agreement.

He blames me for the car breaking down. Tells me that the timing chain tention wasnt replaced. He never informed me of the risk of not changing a timing tention piece until the car broke down. The engine was taken apart by his shop and inspected for any problems, possible problems, or parts that should be replaced during the work that i had done.

This part not only should of been mentioned during the work of the valve job but should of been mention by the shop because they are a jaguar shop, they should know about jaguars, and knowing of jaguars they should be able to inform and customer of any problems that may occur or parts that should be brought up to the customer as a courtesy warning to avoid " Near " future problems and common sense to bring up in the shops perspective.

Result of the car breaking down, Another jaguar shop has checked the car and came to conclusion of improper or no cleaning of the engine parts when put back together, or improper placement or sealing of gaskets ie. heads, valve covers, and intake manifold.

The car, because of the problem that it was, had oil and coolant in the intake, and other parts that oil and coolant do not go.

Mariane and David I feel your pain.I bought a 1995 Jaguar a couple of years ago. Every thing on it worked and it looked fine. It was also fun to drive. The day after I bought it I took it to a local import repair shop for an oil change. I get a call from the mechanic at the shop. He said that the oil pan had one of the exandable oil drain plugs and that was wrong. He said that he would rethread the hole and put on the proper plug. I said OK. I picked it up the next day. I put it in my garage and all of the oil just flooded my garage floor. Come to find out this clown rammed a piece of half inch water pipe with a plumbing cap on it. I took it back and made the idiot replace it with the expandable plug. I didn't leak. A month after I bought it we went on vacation in it. We headed off for Durango Colorado. I live in Indianapolis Indiana and by the time we reached St. Louis water was pouring from under the dashboard. A mechanic at Goodyear said the A/C drain line was plugged. I said fix it. He said he couldn't find it and said that if we ran the A/C on low maybe that would help. We arrived in Colorado Springs. We were driving it up the 20 mile road to the summit of Pikes Peak. At mile 18 it just quit running. A few minutes later it started again. We made it to the top but on the way down it sounded and felt like the car was falling to pieces. The shock absorbers had beat themselve to death on the rough road. Well $400 dollars later we headed off over the mountains to Durango. Sixty miles from Durango it kept dying. We would wait and then it would start again. This happened about ever 5 miles. We made it Durango and it quit running a couple of miles from our motel. We finally made it to our motel. Next morning we go out and it has a flat tire. I got the nice Juagar lug wrench and whe I went to turn the bolts it bent in half. We had to have a wrecker come out and change the tire. On to the tire store for 2 new tires and another $400 gone. In durango it would run fine but then just stop. The only shop it the town that worked on imports was on the vacation. We couldn't wait a week so we decided to get rid of the d**n thing. It quit running just outside the driveway to a car dealer. We sat there until it would start and pulled into the lot. We bought a 4 wheel drive Suburban and never looked back. God I loved that Jaguar!

A 1988 XJS as a daily driver!

I'm an old Jag lover myself but to expect to use one as a dependable daily driver is a fantasy. Buy a used Honda too because the Jag will probably spend a lot of time in the shop with just the sort of problems you are already having. When it is running right it will be pure bliss. Just the thoughts of someone who has owned an XJS.
