This report is about specific Safelite location on W. 54th St. in New York City but in trying to deal with customer service, warranty dept and corporate it seems like this rippoff technique could be endemic to the whole corporation.

I booked an appointment to have my windshield repaired. A rock and hit the windshield and put a 1/4 inch Star crack in the windshield of my 2014 Acura MDX. My order number is 282573. When I got to the location the technician evaluated the crack in the location of the crack. He said "that's pretty close to the edge. I'm not sure if I can get my machine in there" and warned "I'll give it a try but there's a chance that it might not be completely clear after the repair".

NOTE: he never warned me that he could destroy my windshield while trying to repair it.

I figured what was the worst that could happen to be a small mark From the repair but it would stuff the crack from spreading. So I drove into the garage and he proceeded to get out the equipment. Once he applied the machine to the windshield it immediately cracked about 10 inches across the windshield laterally and appeared that he cracked the windshield on purpose because he was pressing very vigorously and the machine was vibrating.

He came and got me showed me the damage. Needless to say I was flabbergasted and in shock. My New York senses kicked in and I knew immediately that I was being ripped off. I got the manager who said "you're going to need a new windshield". He also said "I won't charge you for the repair (effort)".

This is the first rip off report I've ever written. Although I've been ripped off before, I never felt like I have to warn other consumers about this company and this particular location.

I had a feeling safelite wasn't a good idea and that I should go to a local body shop with more experience and less likely to rip off a consumer because they depend on loyalty. It turned out I was right. Safelight doesn't care they generate leads through the web pushing to locations and can you scorched-earth techniques with these types of ripoffs to boost their profits.

I was hopping mad as you can see from my 7/29/14 post and made it know to all channels of the web (facebook, linkedin etc.) Then a wonderful thing happened. Thomas M. Feeny's (CEO of Safelite) office contacted me to hear me out and then got me a windsheid for the price of a repair - which was wonderful and fair. It restored my faith, not only in Safelite, but in enterprise customer service overall. #ThankyouSafelite.
