Yes, I had a very bad experience at Safeway Stores. One of their security guards screamed at me and stated that I couldn't have a plastic bag in my shopping cart! I was planning to buy some produce and had the bag in my cart when I decided to go over to the meat case. Later, I found out that she was accusing me of "planning" on lifting some of their precious meat from the meat case. This guard called the police and had me detained, photographed and tried to have me sign her report of trumped up charges. I refused to do so -- so she had me barred from the store. The entire incident was carried out at the front of the store in front of employees and customers.

They have no surveillance tape showing me doing anything unlawful but they do like to harass consumers, particularly if you fit their profile (racial, gender, age, handicapped, low income, etc.) They even had the nerve to fire one of their female employees (30 years of service) because she bought some half rotten lemons at discount (see Washington Post 6-13-2000 - Safeway Settles Bias Suit With Woman Fired Over Lemon).

I wrote the President of the company, Mr. Steven Burd, Safeway, Inc., 5918 Stoneridge Mall Road, Pleasanton, CA 94588 but he didn't respond. I guess the consumer just doesn't matter if you have billions of dollars coming in.
