Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
Schofield Media is a pay for play media company. Falling for their tricks will cut into a company's cash flow and damage business partnership relations. Their business model or rather CON GAME is as old as print. They are basically a giant call service / BOILER ROOM. Their massive sales team calls up as many companies as they can, telling their marks that they want to feature their company, CEO, etc...in their next issue. The story will only run if the sales person manages to TRICK the company into handing over their vendor list.

Schofield Media will then proceed to shake the vendors down for advertising money. All magazine CIRCULATION NUMBERS ARE FAKED. Not only are the official numbers reported by the company made up, but the purposely uninformed sales team will further exaggerate circulation numbers. While it is legal to manipulate the truth in sales, it is illegal to lie about the actual attributes of the product, this is a violation of the Anglo American Commercial Law. Often the only ones receiving and/or reading the magazine are those that have been conned, such as the featured companies and their advertisers. Conned advertisers will pay almost nothing to tens of thousands of dollars for basically worthless advertising space.

The magazine articles are worse then terrible and typically have no bearing to anything remotely relevant to the featured company or even current economic trends. In fact, stories are roughly recycled and the same "writer" and "editor" will put together multiple magazines despite the facts that the alleged topics couldn't be anymore different, like the lumber and dining industry. Do business with this company and YOU and YOUR vendors will live to regret it.

Work at this company at YOUR own peril, it is a dead end and could ruin YOUR reputation if listed on your resume. This is particularly true for journalists/writers/freelancers-they basically only use in house "writers" despite what they advertise. A stint at Schofield could set your career back years. To learn more about Schofield Media and other similar scam artist companies, google... schofield media scum..... or schofield media con game.... or schofield media media bistro.... They have middle management employees trolling the web for negative comments.

This is a very secretive company that prefers to operate under the radar and under many different names. Don't be surprised if your PR gets a call from ________ Media or any number of their magazines looking to do an exciting feature.

Yet again a call from Scofield Publishing " Ken Burges calling on behalf of the West Midlands Police" I have noticed the last couple of calls they say on behalf of the police they used to say this is the police, these people do not have anything to do with the police, fire service, nursing or any other worthy profession that may pull on you heart strings the whole point is to try and get you to comply with taking out advertising space in an etherial magazine ask these people to send you a hard copy they cant do that, ask them for names of officers in the force they have dealt with they cant do that either, they brow beat someone into giving out their contact list and then tell you that so and so has taken out an add and said you would be interested too, so then if its an important customer of yours, you feel that you should take out an add, if that does not work they then try the "dont you want to support (insert worthy cause here) just ask them for a name or a badge number they will soon stop calling, it leaves a  bad taste in the mouth knowing that if someone else is answering the phone to these people they will be intimidated by the sales tactics and anyone would be back footed when you pick up the phone and hear the words its the police.

The report on the work and how the company is ran is on point. I worked there many years ago and recent reports explained my day to day work there, nothing has changed.

Nobody cares about the story and nothing is done unless advertising is sold. There was always talk about the circulation numbers on the magazines. The reports on the Owner and drugs and sleeping with employees i can see as true, I have no proof but it's pretty clear.

You call over and over again with them telling you "take me off your list" but you have a set number of calls to make everyday and you just can't do it without calling these "leads" over and over.

I have a few accounts come though and vendor list sent my way. But got sick of lying day after day. I ended up just giving up and Finally was let go. (thank god for unemployment)

Was the job itself legit? YES, i mean they gave you a salary and comp on what you brought in. But i was smart enough to know what they were doing was wrong. There isn't any income coming in to this company other than advertising.

They did have a nice Christmas party for us at a hotel ballroom. But i knew this wasn't going to last. I knew it wasn't going to keep me employed for a long period of time and the lying eats at you.

I work in sales before and after so its not that i couldn't handle it. I guess you wouldn't understand unless you worked there.

Couple years later i saw the president (wannabe hardass english guy,SMH) and V.P at a bar, groping girls im assuming worked there. I honestly was about to send a round there way just because and the President POINTED at me to the V.P and started taking crap about me. I was with my girl, early in our relationship but man i wanted to put the english a*s in his place.
(my friend was playing pool next to them , that how i know he was talking smack) I guess they didnt like that  i had morals

I might not have VP in my title but I have done well for myself. There are better jobs in chicago then this company. Hope this helps anyone thinking about interviewing with them.

I used to work for a b2b company and am glad to see sites like the rip off report standing up for people. I have a new site devoted to companies like this at www.b2bscams.com and www.magazine-scams.org I have more information about Schofield Media and other companies just like them at my site. Thank you rip off report for a great and valuable resource. I have a lot of information about these kind of companies and will be posting more and more about them as time goes by.

These people have resorted to outright scamming now, they have a new magazine called construction today monthly. h**p://constructiontodaymonthly.com and in their media kit they claim they have over 82k subscribers! This is so false it's pathetic. The new tactic they are using is on all of their new magazines they just lust the name of the magazine and their new address is " 181 West Madison Street Chicago,Il 60603 " they are trying to fly under the radar so when they contact their victim companies and the victim company Googles their magazine nothing will show up negative. They are also slightly renaming their other magazine titles so they can continue using the old content on a new magazine. I also called a friend if mine and he or she told me quite a bit about the inner sanctum of management. He or she said that they just hate this rip off report because it shows up on the first page of google. He or she also said they routinely hold meetings about this rip off report. They shut down all of their USA offices in July because of gross mismanagement. They put a lot of chicagoans out of work and in the un employment line in the matter of minutes. The people who run this company should be in jail for the fraud the commit everyday. When they let me go on that fateful day in July I called one of my friends who used to work at schofield media and I told her that they closed down and the first thing out of her mouth was " Did they get raided? " so that should tell you what kind of people these are. If you are a company and have been contacted by these people who run these fake magazines an have purchased advertising in their magazines, you should demand proof of their readership numbers, you should also request your money back for fraud and if you haven't paid yet for an ad, you should cancel it immediately. This company is toxic to the very core.

Schofield Media, due to all of its bad publicity (and this Rip-Off Report) has changed its name to Business Media Publications in an effort to hide it's true identity.  Feel free to also see this report:

http://www.ripoffreport.com/media/business-media-publi/business-media-publications-sc-8448a.htm

It is unbelievable that Schofield Media would change their name to Business Media Publications aka http://www.businessmediapublications.com aka Business Media Publications Chicago.  They are just trying to get away from the bad publicity as said earlier.  All the people defending this company are current employees who are likely paid to make this comments, and/or senior level management trying to repair the company's reputation.  In a few more years, expect another name change and/or address change - they also move around the Chicago area every few years to change addresses as well.  So be wary of their tactics: don't say you weren't warned about Business Media Publications.

nothing surprises me these days especially people who "hate" on companies or in this case people who are successful. listen people, all these post's are inaccurate and completely untrue. I work for schofield and the people or person posting this garbage must have been someone who couldn't handle working for a company that demands 100% from its employee's. There is NOTHING wrong with Schofield Media. The company is very transparent and forthcoming with its vendors and companies. Get a life...

A GREAT, GREAT, COMPANY!!! AN EMPLOYEES VIEW...

#15UPDATE Employee

Wed, January 28, 2009

I have worked for Schofield Media (in the UK) for around 6 years now and quite frankly feel that the negative comments about this company are unfounded and ridiculous. I have always been the type to take any criticism direct to whoever it may be towards, ie. company, Managing Director/ President, owner, rather than write an extensive blog on a website so appologies in advance, this is new to me. I have left previous employers with an "axe to grind" and have found it more effective to talk direct, either by email or phone, rather than hide behind an alias on a web page. I would never respond to these types of blogs but on this occassion I want to speak out as I think the company is great to work for, has great employees, has great and very loyal customers and, has great magazines to offer them. I have sold advertising space for around 14 years in several diferrent companies and I must say that this is one of the best companies that I have worked for. I feel some of the negative comments made are quite insulting to the people who still work at this company as they are extremely hard working and very customer focussed. I also think the comments are misleading to anyone who wants to work at the company in the future and casts a ficticious shadow over a decent company. I personally work all day and night in order to achieve what my customers require and in return I get treated exceptionally both by Schofield Media and by my customers (new and existing). I highlight that I work day and night (which is'nt expected of me, it's just the way I am) in retaliation to the person who said that he was expected to find his/ her own leads during his own time/ breaks- if you do a little extra and above the norm you will find that you will excel in most things that life throws at you and you will also be respected for it. I feel the comments about readership etc. are also ridiculous as well. I have worked with many companies and organised their advertising and promotion through both supplier based editorials and stand alone advertising and have recieved nothing but praise from my customers. I love nothing better to hear that a company has received a great response from their marketing within the magazines. Any companies that do not get the response they require (which happens in advertising- in all publications) I will go back and talk to them. I find out what additional readership will help them and find out how we can improve and how we can improve their marketing. I always act on their response and work d**n hard to achieve a positive outcome for my customers. This is what you might call basic selling techniques and helping your customer will create positives for them, your employer and, yourself. I must also stress that I think personal attacks on particular employees are disgusting and shameless. I feel that if you have a problem with the way a fellow employee, manager, director, vp, conducts themself then address it directly with them. I do not think writing on a website blog what you think maybe true is a fair way of airing your grievances- It's unfair on the person, their colleagues, friends and family and I think it is the cowardly way to have a pop at someone. How would you like it if it was your name printed on the world wide web with half truths and lies. On a personnal basis I quite honestly believe that this company is great to work for and the company offers it's customers exceptional products. I must also stress that all of the negative comments are from "ex- employees". Maybe if you can run a business better than you should go to your bank manager and start a business of your own. I am sure that your ideas, that include not making profit, not contacting new clients and, not nuturing new staff, will secure you a handsome business start up loan. Simon (A very happy employee)

Schofield's key to success is LYING

#16UPDATE EX-employee responds

Wed, November 12, 2008

Schofield recruited me for the position of "Research Editor." Upon my interview they were dishonest about the actual duties of the position. They described the position as a person who searches for a good story and outlines a rough draft for an actual writer to complete. They described the minimum 120 calls per day as "warm calling," and further described a "warm call" as someone that knows that you are going to be calling them. There was no editing or researching involved. I was unknowingly recruited to be an accomplice to a legal form of extortion. The leads were not "warm" - they were simply random businesses pulled off Hoovers listings. The scripts used to call the "featured" businesses was where the lying became much more interesting. The "Research Editors" (that do neither researching nor editing) were instructed to tell a high ranking person in company XYZ that our Editor-in-Chief had hand selected company XYZ (lie #1) as a perfect company for an upcoming issue. We were instructed to say, "We are doing a special issue on your industry..." Often times the Research Editor would not even know the type of industry they called - they would have to wait until the interviewee began discussing the company to figure out who they even called. The Research Editor then asked very generic questions to make the interview last 15 minutes but no longer than 25 minutes, because of it was too short it could make it seem fake and if it was too long it could be taking away from making enough phone calls in the day. This process is referred to as a "Pledge." The last thing the Research Editor is instructed to say in a pledge is, "I really like everything we've gone over here, but I have to run it by my editor to see if it will be a good fit for the issue." Nothing about this last statement is true. No one ever reviews the story with anyone else. Schofield does not care at all about the quality of the story or whether or not it fits in the issue - they simply have to make it seem real. The Research Editor is instructed to set up a time to call back two days later for what is referred to as a "List Hit." The "List Hit" is a quick conversation intended to get a list of vendors that will ultimately be asked to advertise. The Research Editor does not make the implication that the vendors will be asked to advertise on the company's behalf (although that is exactly what's happening). The Research Editor is instructed to say a masking statement like, "We would like to incorporate some of your business partners into story with an edit mention or even a trade advertisement." This wording, which is out of the script given to all Schofield Media Research Editors, is intended to mask the fact that they are about to solicit to their vendors. Company XYZ is thinking they are having a story written about them and that their vendors are being contacted as a form credit to the story. So the Research Editor continues, "Could I get a list of your vendors, anyone from the people who supply your goods to the people who provide your delivery services?" Note- Schofield has no interest asking for a list of clients or partners. Schofield wants a list of vendors that company XYZ purchases from because vendors fear if they do not buy an advertisement it may result in XYZ taking their business elsewhere. Once this list is sent, it is immediately passed off to a high-pressure sales team that coerces vendors into purchasing advertisements. The sales team will repeatedly drop the name of the high-ranking person interviewed so the vendor will worry that this is a request from a top person that is one of their top clients. Advertisements sell for between $1,000 minimally to upwards of $20,000. If no advertisements are bought from any of the vendors the story will not run. At least one ad must be sold for the story to run, and the length of story is strictly dependent on how many ads are sold. The process is not illegal - but it should be. Schofield Media strains the relationships of the "featured" company and their vendors. Vendors buy advertisements out of fear that their client will be upset they are not involved in the article and potentially lose the business. I am embarrassed to say I worked there. It truly is a mishap in my career. There are several other problems with Schofield Media. Chris Schofield (President) is said to be cocaine addict and sleeps with employees, which I cannot personally attest to but is the common word around the office. The turnover at Schofield Media is tremendous. Don't expect much job security working there. Often times Research Editors will request items from companies as a part of "product research," i.e.- they have received bikes, purses, clothing, make-up, watches, and many other items. Often times stories for these companies that provided "product research" never ran - but the Research Editor made off with some cool stuff for free. If you receive a call from a Schofield Publication, mess with them. No one is allowed to send personalized emails. They have about 5 different emails they can send. if you ask them to send enough emails, or an email in regards to something specific, they run out of options. Everyone is required to take breaks at the same times - 10:30 CDT to 10:45, 12:30 to 1:30 and 3:30 to 3:45. No one is in the office before 8:30 CDT or after 5:00 CDT. Set up meetings during those breaks or outside of those hours and you will drive them nuts. Not a single person there works a minute more than required.

How I See Schofield Media!!!

This company is scum. They first off tell you that all leads are provided (they suck by the way). Then after you are hired they force you to do outside research and then get mad when you take time at work to do this research on company hours. How do they expect you to hit you numbers when they leads they give you have such things as non-corporate numbers (plants, warehouses, etc.) Some of the executives listed are dead or no longer with the company. They are very vulture-esque in their overall business approach. One of the worse job choices I've ever made.

Zero Paid Circulation

#18UPDATE EX-employee responds

Sun, July 13, 2008

Henry has the basic gist of what goes on at Schofield, but the only thing potential advertisers, or profile companies need to know is: ZERO PAID CIRCULATION. Mr. Schofield talked a long yarn about the accountability and integrity of the BPA audit process. What he failed to mention is that the paid circulation of what he calls the "custom publishing-based model" mastheads in Ideal Media's (the parent umbrella shell corporation including Redcoat Publishing, et al) have ZERO PAID CIRCULATION. All of the "magazines" have cover prices, but not once, ever, in the history of Schofield Media has there ever been a paid subscription. Ironically, profile companies that want copies of their profile and/or reprints or reprint rights, pay through the nose for a magazine that is given away for free. Paid and Unpaid Circulation are as different as apples and oranges. GQ has a news stand price of $5. If you subscribe for a year, it costs you $1 per issue. At $1 per issue GQ is selling the product at a loss. The reason they do it is to support their Paid Circulation numbers. Paid Circulation is how an Ad Buyer, who knows anything about what they're doing, measures the value of an ad buy. The other measure is Readership Demographics. The "readership demographics" produced are merely a click box with headcount and revenur ranges. If you want to crown yourself the CEO of ABC Widgets, declare revenue of $250 Million and have magazines sent to your crummy little studio apartment, then voila, you are a part of Schofield's audited circulation. If this wasn't a scam, why would they put a cover price on a magazine that has a paid circulation of zero? At the end of the day, it really doesn't matter because: 1. The profile companies have it coming. If you are willing to throw your most valued vendors under the bus then don't be suprised when they walk away, or worse, squeeze you until blood comes out. 2. We're in a recession, kids. Greased wheels turn smoothly, but when the economy is bad, there is far, far less grease to go around. This entire house of cards revolves around vanity and disposable income. Right now, one of the two is in short supply. If you are squeaking by, how are you going to respond when some high school dropout calls you to buy an $8,000.00 ad, in a magazine you've never heard of, with a paid circulation of zero? Caveat emptor.

Schofield Media's Official Response from Andrew Schofield, CEO

#19REBUTTAL Owner of company

Thu, July 03, 2008

I would like to take the time to respond to the recent posting made on this site by Henry a.k.a. Frank, to highlight the false statements, complete inaccuracies and unfounded allegations that he made. It has been nearly ten years since Schofield Media was founded. From that point in time it has enjoyed tremendous success as a media company. Schofield Media Group now employs over 350 employees, publishes over 30 magazine titles and operates in excess of twenty industrial and medical live events. We combine these with an impressive range of e-media products, all of which reach our audiences of senior level executives and medical practitioners across North America, Europe and India. There is absolutely no secrecy surrounding our business and its various operations. I encourage anyone interested in learning about Schofield to visit our web site, www.schofieldmediagroup.com. There you will also find a detailed article about our company that was published in 2006 in Folio magazine, http://www.foliomag.com/2006/10-000-40-million-and-counting. Additionally, the site contains press releases highlighting our activities, developments, our numerous acquisitions along with a link to Entrepreneur magazine, which recently voted us number 83 in their top 500 fastest-growing companies in the U.S. I would invite anyone reading Henry a.k.a. Frank's comments to review all of this information when giving consideration to the Schofield Media Group. As with any company that has grown and achieved a high level of success quickly, especially one with a more entrepreneurial approach to its market, there can be individuals who have an axe to grind for their own reasons. It is true that some of our magazines follow a custom publishing-based model, or pay for play as Henry a.k.a. Frank wants to call it. As a point to note, this apparently questionable area of the B-B media industry is one of the fastest growing in the sector, posting growth of 21.1 percent in 2006, and accounting for over $4.47 billion in revenues. (As noted in a recent market study by Veronis Suhler Stevenson Communications.) Some of our magazines do write and publish profiles on companies in which advertising support is provided by the featured company's vendors; however, there's nothing secretive about this. Henry a.k.a. Frank might dismiss this as pay for play, but it is an established business model that offers very positive exposure to both the profiled company and its vendors to our magazines' readers. In no way can our approach to market be considered a con or as a trick. The companies we profile are fully aware of what we are doing during discussions with our research and sales teams, and in particular during the content creation, therefore throughout their dealings with us. Because of this it would be impossible to trick them into a business proposition that they are unaware of. In fact, if we were tricking companies I think it's somewhat unlikely that we would have managed to successfully profile over 4,000 companies across our titles in the last twelve months alone, including many Fortune 500 companies. We have countless letters of commendation and praise for the profiles we published from many of the companies we have written about, copies of which we can provide if any interested party would like to see. We also have had independent readership surveys carried out on our magazines that confirm that our audiences have a high level of interest in reading the company profiles. Henry's a.k.a. Frank's allegations that the circulation on our books is faked are inaccurate. This comment is completely untrue. In fact, many of our publications' circulations are independently BPA or ABC audited. Additionally, all of our titles have full details of their respective readerships listed in their media kits -- all of which are publicly available for download on our Web sites, and they are also sent to all our existing and potential advertisers, as well as the profiled companies. Many of our magazines are leaders in their respective marketplaces for their readership market position vs. our competitors, and some have been well established in their markets for many years, the oldest in fact dating back to the late 19th century! The next point that Henry a.k.a. Frank makes is related to the quality of our Editorial. I have already highlighted that we have a high level of proven customer satisfaction with the articles we have written over the years. We write the vast majority of our custom-based content in-house, through a talented and experienced editorial team. Additionally, we use many experienced freelance staff across our other titles. I would also highlight a very key fact that two of our magazines, (one a custom-based profile title), won very prestigious EDDIE awards in 2007. This program is a run by our industry leading trade magazine, Folio. and in their words about the program, it recognizes excellence in magazine editorial, honoring the most innovative and well-written editorial in the publishing marketplace across the country and around the world. The best magazines submit their work for consideration for the largest and most inclusive competition in the media industry. I am certain that we would not be receiving such accolades if we were producing inferior content. Schofield Media Group has grown to become a diverse company that embraces several business models, produces many different products, from peer-reviewed medical journals in Europe to traditional contract ad-based magazines in New York to Web-based products or in-person events. We also offer a variety of information-sharing tools today to our range of customers. Our company continues to grow at a very impressive pace in challenging market conditions because of highly talented and motivated employees that work across the company and because our customers are very happy with the quality of the products that we produce. I disagree with Henry a.k.a. Frank's characterization of Schofield Media and am curious if it is perhaps the subversive work of a competitor or disgruntled ex-employee or freelancer. However, it could be the writer is in fact reacting to an unsatisfactory customer experience. If that's the case, we want to know about it and we would be pleased to talk to him or her via phone or e-mail to learn the circumstances. Our contact details are available to all on our Web site, www.schofieldmediagroup.com. Andrew J. Schofield Founder, Chairman & CEO Schofield Media Group LLC
