I have had bank accounts in a few different banks over many years, and never had a problem. I recently opened an account at a Sovereign bank; deposited a money order, and five days later wrote two checks, and they bounced them, and charged me $25.00 each. When I confronted them, they very righteously said that I should have waited another day. Nothing was explained to me when I opened the acct.

Then I wrote a check for rent; a week later I went to the bank and cashed an unemployment check, and they charged me $25.00 because they put a hold on money in my account when I cashed the check, and so there wasn't enough for the rent. So.....I again confronted them but this time closed the account out, because they were as self righteous as the last time. Before I closed it out, I had written a check to my cable co. for 81.00 and I went to the office and asked if they could not cash the check, and i would pay them cash, which I did. They said that if the check went thru and bounced they would take the fee off.

Well, guess what, THE BANK HONORED THE CHECK, WHEN THERE WAS NO MONEY IN MY ACCOUNT, AND IS NOW SENDING ME BILLS ADDING ON FIVE DOLLARS A DAY, SAYING THAT IF i DON'T PAY IT THEY WILL CLOSE OUT MY ACCOUNT, WHICH WAS CLOSED OUT LONG AGO!! STAY AWAY FROM SOVEREIGN!

I never read anywhere in any of my "pamphlets" that the bank could steal money out of my personal acct. to pay for overdraft fees on my business acct. and no they are not linked for overdraft protection anymore. They used to be but when an unauthorized charge overdrew my acct. they bounced the charge then accepted the charge and charged me 35. for the bounce and 35. for the overdraft even though they took the money out of my personal acct.

When I signed up for my accts. it never said anywhere that I couldn't post date checks. I have never been able to cash a postdated check from the Government at this bank and to be fair any other bank, but when I sent out payments early and post dated them ( because I was on a payment schedule) I made the mistake of assuming (like in other States) they would not be able to cash them weeks early. I know it was a mistake on my part, but the bank was not that understanding telling me it was common knowledge that you can't post date checks and by the time I found out I had over 150.00 in overdraft fees. Common knowledge? I have had a checking acct. for 25 years and have post dated a lot of checks and never had a problem.

The bank would not give an inch even though the money was deposited before the checks should have been cashed, but now they have committed theft and my other acct. will be overdrawn. This bank sucks now that Santander owns it. Can't wait for my day in court.

This bank definately rips off their customers for money and I dont care what the employee's say! This bank charges your account AFTER the account is closed and then bill you astronomical fees. I closed my account with this bank because I got sick and tired of them ripping me off for my money. Then they have transactions on the account AFTER it is closed. Then they tell you there is no where you can complain! There is! I am filing a complaint against them with the state and federal government. Anyone who has had problems with this bank I encourage you to do the same. We should all get together and file a class action lawsuit against them. Get in touch with other via this site and file a lawsuit against this company. They definately have some illegal practices going on here.

Some important details I neglected to mention

#6Consumer Comment

I wrote the original complaint and forgot some important details. Not only does Sovereign deduct $25.00 from your bank account for checks that you write, knowing that the money is there, AND, cash checks after you've CLOSED out your account, and keep threatening to close an account that was closed weeks before (and they don't have a problem!?) - they also deduct each $25.00 charge immediately, but neglect to inform you until a week later by mail. Does anyone see what kind of havoc this could cause with your account? Like BOUNCED CHECKS?! Do they care? Absolutely not! This seems to be there way of making up for the low interest rates, and getting rid of any customer that does not keep a high balance sitting in their account! Why should they be bothered with people that they cannot make a lot of money off of? They make it very clear that they will NOT be bothered with you. Their "Red Carpet Service" (LOL)is for the rich only, not for anyone who is going through a time of living paycheck to paycheck.
