If not - that was your first mistake. With mail or telemarketing calls - Never assume they are legitimate! SCAMMERS ARE USING REAL BUSINESS NAMES and in this case a real church name in order to appear to be legitimate. Never rely on the info the scammers provide and DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH. A quick call to the REAL church would have prevented you from being scammed. Just shred anything that they send you that has your name and address on it. and trash the rest. As for you being followed - not sure why a scammer would do that.
