Standard Insurance is not living up to their end of the bargain.  When a hailstorm pummeled my neighborhood recently, I filed a claim for roof damage which they denied, citing only minor damage.  However, numerous neighbors of mine have filed claims and are getting new roofs as a result.  My roofing contractor is convinced the roof is totaled, but the so-called "roofing engineer" that Standard sent to my house after I complained to the state insurance board claims otherwise.  Uh, the engineer was paid by Standard, no less.  They say there was not enough "kinetic energy" to seriously damage my roof.  Bull!  That storm knocked off nearly every leaf on my trees and I have grapevine leaves that the hail stones actually pierced.  Numerous holes are still there, so don't tell me some b.s. about "kinetic energy" while my entire neighborhood is getting re-roofed!  In addition, my fence is peppered with strike marks.  The marks were hard enough to knock stain off the fence.  My next step is the "appraisal process" that's in my policy, then legal action if necessary.  My roof was not in a bubble during that storm and it is not made of kryptonite.  Even the house across the street from me with a metal roof is getting a new roof.  Standard needs to do the right thing and settle up.

To Brett & Mary:
You have every right to voice your opinion about the poor service you received from Standard Insurance Agency. They are a mediocre insurance agency which only provides medium coverage and nothing more. Regardless of the fact that I carried a full coverage policy and had been with Standard Insurance for a couple of years, they sided with the dealership and abandoned their loyalty to me-their customer. My case involved insurance fraud for repairs to my car. After my accident, my car was towed to a Ford dealership. I suspected the foreman of ordering parts he did not need, because he kept changing his story as to why he was keeping my car in the shop longer than needed. I promptly made my suspicions known to Standard Insurance that the foreman was committing insurance fraud.  Standard Insurance took no action to prevent the insurance fraud or even after one of their insurance adjuster agreed that work had been charged but work had not been done. However, that was verbal and I could not get his statement in writing. As a result, my car still has inferior work and the air conditioner that the shop replaced a little over a year ago is now out. The only thing that I find that Standard Insurance is good at is proclaiming their innocent which of course is not true. The pervious review mentions to contact the TX Dept. of Insurance which I would also recommend. Insurance companies are rated and you can find out how many complaints they receive. I would not recommend Standard Insurance to anyone. Instead, go with a company which has an AA++ rating.

People, one must take a moment and look at the big picture prior to putting all of your trust in the hands of a "Roofing" contractor. I too am a consumer of a Homeowners Policy therefore can somewhat relate to how you feel when your claim is denied.

Fact: a roofing contractor is simply a salesman with "no" formal training whats so ever on how to identify hail damage vs. mechanical damage, blistering, product deffect etc. An insurance adjuster normally has plenty of experience under their belt to identify wind or hail damages. As for the comment made regarding your insurance company hiring an engineer, I can assure you that an engineer is capable of identifying the damages found on the surface of your roof.  An engineer is a third party (not an employee of the insurance co.) who is hired to provide a fair and non bais opinion on what could have possibly caused the damages if any. Keep in mind that you the consumer can hire an engineer as well at your expense.

Is is possible for a roof to be non affected by a hail storm in a heavily affected area? Absolutely.

A roofs surface can easily sustain the impact of hail due to multiple reasons. As an example it's age,  pitch of roof (hail tends to roll right of steep roofs), tree coverage, light winds vs heavy winds etc.

You can have 5 roofers climb and inspect a new roof and they will all claim to have found hail damage to the roof warranting a complete replacement. The first thing that will become damaged on a roof are the aluminum vent caps on the roof.

Inspect these vents and this will give you an idea as to whether your roof might have sustained hail damage.

My recommendation is to have your roofing contractor meet with your adjuster on site to inspect the roof together. If the contractor and adjuster dissagree on their findings, feel free to question both the roofer and adjuster as to what formal training they have had to help them identify hail damaged and how long they have been in their line of work. Keep in mind that you can always log onto the Texas Department of Insurance website and to verify that the adjuster is licensed by the state of TX and to obtain the date that their license was issued.

Appraisal process. Please know that you are responsible for the cost of obtaining your own appraiser and splitting the cost of the umpire who will ultimately make the final call.

Hope this helps and remember to use "common sense" prior to slandering your insurance carrier.

To Brett -
I am also a customer of Standard Insurance.  They have done the same to my claim for roof repairs. The adjuster who came out says they will replace some missing singles.  The 3 roofing contractors that came out all said the whole roof needs to be replaced.

Standard Insurance has accepted checks for house insurance from us for about 13 years and we have never placed a claim until now.  I am looking into what can be done about this conduct.

Beware of their car insurance also. They sent me a check for hail damage last year that I couldn't use. They made it out to me AND the Ford Company.  I have no intention of using Ford as my repair service and they won't reissue.  So, I've never had the hail damage repaired because their "standard" of customer service is the worst I've ever seen.  They advertise themselves as providing insurance for the best price around.  Their prices are pretty good but buyer beware - they don't back up with good service.  They are all about taking your money. When it is time for them to provide service, they are all about excuses.  I will be reporting them to everyone and anyone I know plus to all who advertise for them.  They are thieves.

Thanks - No Roof Repair in Kaufman Texas from Standard Insurance.
