On August 8th, 2008, my husband received a letter from Star Capital Securities Inc with check #16538 for $4,875.00. He placed the call as the letter stated, and spoke to claim agent Mrs. Carol Armstrong who proceeded to tell him that he won because of his shopping at Wal-Mart, Sears or Home Depot.

As the letter stated that he was a declared one of the 40th declared 2nd

category winners of North American Shoppers Sweepstakes held on March 5th, 2008, the toal winning was $125,000.00 from the 5 million US dollars shared by the other 40 declared.

This check is drawn on Fifth Third Bank of Brentwood, $2,975 of this check is supposed to be applied for Government Taxes on the big winning to be paid by Moneygram or Western Union directly to the tax agent.

When the winnings are processed he would then get a final check lump sum payment of $120,125.00 to be delivered by FexEx. Mrs Brenda Hicks is the promotion manager.

I had not heard of this scam before now, so I went on the computer and pulled up Star Capital Securities Inc. and that' s when I read of the people who had received this same letter, I told him this is a scam.

The bank that is involved with this scam should be held accountable along with Star Capital Securities and made to pay these people who they have tried to pull this scam on.

Every Fifth Third Band should be shut down and never allowed to reopen again, all the people that are named in these letters should be sent to prision and made to serve time for all of the pain that they have caused.

This is a typical example of a fraudulent check associated with a scam. These scammers are extremely savy -- including 800#'s for contacting them and also for telling you exactly what you want to hear. I have worked for 5/3 Bank for 9 years and have been personally associated with customer's experiencing this type of fraudulent activity. I have directly told customer's that the check (which can be drawn on ANY bank) is a fraudulent item and not to send the money as requested in the letter. Even my experience with this type of fraud has not encouraged people to listen. The idea of there being any possibility of that type of money being awarded seems to draw people in -- usually to something they suspected wasn't right to begin with. Any time you send out a check you are potentially exposing your own checking account to the scammers. They can use your checking and routing number to create copies of your checks and the bank checks. Just because a check says "official check" or "cashier's check" doesn't necessarily prove its true value. Be careful, seek advise from your bankers (not the teller, but a manager) and believe that when we say something is a scam, it usually is. Sorry that you experienced this but the fraud and scamming is only getting worse and more savy.

You expect it to be 5/3's fault that you didn't research something this suspicious? This is one of the most common forms of fraud for some time. It's too bad you were taken advantage of, but the bank was taken advantage of as well. The bank shouldn't be held responsible.

5/3 Bank has more profitable things to do than be involved with a penny-ante scam.

So the scamsters picked 5/3 Bank as the name to put on their phoney check. Why is this 5/3 Bank's fault? What if these scammers used YOUR name & address on their next phoney check? Would that make it YOUR fault?
