Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
I was doing some Christmas shopping in a certain strip center and a nice double demitasse of espresso piqued my tastebuds and would give me a little boost. I wait in line and order a coffee for my brother and a double espresso for me. I was handed a cup for the DIY coffee and waited for the espresso.

And waited...

And waited....

What is this? Espresso is named such because its fast brewed. Why is it taking so long?

Turns out, the barkeeps were busy filling orders for foofy beverages with complexities approaching nitromethane fuel mixes for dragsters. "Half-latte, half foam with a whisper of coco and some nutmeg...make it decaff"

Where is my espresso? Wait, you have to make espresso for a latte...I'm being ignored so I complain. What do these idiots give me? A freaking hot chocolate!

I was eavsdropping on the barkeeps' conversation with a young woman. He held intently on her accounts of her bisexual nature and how her boyfriend didn't mind her butch girlfriend. And I was ignored.

Forget Starbucks. They absolutely stink in service and all these trendy gen-x'ers and later ilk who think this is so cool need to wake up and smell the coffee, unadulterated and jet freaking black stong enough to stand a spoon up.

STARBUCKS -- HOME OF THE ARROGANT YUPPIE SOCIOPATHS. I FEEL SORRY FOR THE EMPLOYEES

#2Consumer Comment

Thu, September 16, 2010

I GOT INTO THE STARBUCKS HABIT WHEN I TRIED A  VANILLA FRAPUCCINO DRINK IN A 7-11 COOLER AND IT WAS LOVE AT FIRST SIP.

I ACTUALLY WENT INTO A STARBUCKS STORE WHEN I WAS SECURITY AT THE ABORITIUM SHOPPING CENTER AND THE STARBUCKS WAS INSIDE THE BARNES AND NOBLES BOOKSTORE. NOTICED SOME YUPPIE SNOTS STARING AT ME BUT I JUST PAID MY MONEY AND LEFT...I ALWAYS TIPPED THE HELP BEHIND THE COUNTER SOMETHING TOO BECAUSE IT WAS A COMMON COURTESY.

WHEN I WAS A PATROL OFFICER, I WENT TO THE STARBUCKS STORE IN SUNSET VALLEY, TEXAS AND I STILL TIPPED. I THINK I PAID HALF-PRICE BUT I TIPPED 20 PERCENT OF THE WHOLE PRICE AND THE REMAINING HALF I WOULD HAVE BEEN CHARGED.

I FELT SORRY FOR THOSE YOUNG LADIES. YELLING YUPPIES, ARROGANT YUPPIES, RUDE AND IMPATIENT YUPPIE SOCIOPATHS WHO THINK THE SERVERS ARE NOT HUMAN BEINGS AND JUST OBJECTS TO BE USED. I DON'T SEE HOW THOSE SERVERS, BARISTAS ,OR WHATEVER, TOOK THE KIND OF VERBAL ABUSE DAY AFTER DAY WITH SUCH GOOD GRACE.

STARTED TO GO INTO A STARBUCKS IN AUSTIN,TEXAS ONCE AND IT WAS LIKE WALKING UP ON A HERD OF BOVINES WITH THE BLANK, STARING FISH EYES AND THE SNEER THAT SEEMED IN PLACE FROM BIRTH... I ALWAYS CARRY ABOUT $200-$300 CHUMP CHANGE FOR SUCH EXCURSIONS. THERE WERE THE LINES AND THE YUPPIES YELLING AND ACTING LIKE THEY ARE THE ONLY PEOPLE IN THE WORLD ---A BUNCH OF SPOILED BRAT, MEWLING FIVE YEAR OLDS WHO NEEDED A BEATING.

I ALSO NOTICED THAT YUPPIES NOT ONLY DO NOT TIP BUT THEY TRY TO STEAL TIPS OTHER CUSTOMERS LEAVE ON THE COUNTER FOR BARISTAS AND SO FORTH.

THERE ARE OTHER PLACES FOR ME TO SPEND MY TIME WITHOUT BEING TREATED SO RUDELY BY YUPPIE PATRONS. I KNOW THE STAFF MIGHT APPRECIATE ME AND THE BIG TIPS I ALWAYS LEAVE BUT I WANT TO ENJOY MYSELF IN A CASUAL MANNER AND LISTENING TO YUPPIES SCREAM AT AND BULLY STAFF..WELL, IF I HAD TO LISTEN VERY LONG, I WOULD BE SMASHING THAT YUPPIE S.O, B. AND GOING TO JAIL FOR NOTHING.
DON'T GO TO STARBUCKS ANYMORE BECAUSE I DONT WANT TO HEAR OR LOOK AT YUPPIES. JIUST BUY MY FRAPPUCCINO OFF THE SHELVES OR OUT OF A COOLER AND GO HOME IN PEACE. SURE IT'S LONELY BUT IT SAVES ME SOME SERIOUS JAIL TIME.
LOTS OF THESE MEW LAWYERS. WELL. THEY ARE YUPPIES TOO.

Nicole goes on about who to and not tip...did she just become the prez of the tipping community..and if you provide crappy service and expect to get tipped nicole..you are in the wrong job! Do not expect anything! Because not everyone cares about what you think and or who you are. you are just another person doing your job and if it is crappy..you ain't gonna get squat! why should you expect a tip. how foolish. typical homer response from someone who should have her parents and the government supporting her. and to the moron from IN going on about what he would put in a drink...lucky he never met me...I would fix him a drink of emergency room proportions. what a dork.

Just because your drink is simple and all the other customers want complicated drinks doesn't mean that your drink should go ahead of all the other customers. Get a life, man.

OK, yes I understand why someone would be frustrated if an employee was chit chatting to another customer over God knows what.. But please, I really apologize for the Starbucks employee, for the "wasting" of you precious time. I am a current starbucks employee, and its everyday that i get orders like " Hey, im gunna haavee 2.. double half calf, no foam, non- fat, 4 pump grande in a venti, suger free vanilla, with whip and extra caramel lattes"... and thats everyday, but hey, thats my job... BUT as we all learned in kindergarten... 'WAIT YOUR TURN AND BE PATIENT'...just because it takes 15 seconds to make your "double shot espresso" and YOU have to wait for me to make the wonka lonka drink ahead of you, c'mon PIPE DOWN... and yes about that "tipping" bull, thats complete b.s. Being a starbucks "barista", i can defiantly say that we have gone through enough of "you didn't make this right, i wanted 15 pumps not 14, i can taste the difference"... or " i want the caramel frapppacchiinnoo?".. so i make it then they go " no hunny, i wanted a hot chocolate" to have to even pull in "2 cents". so please girl, before make your little "list" of tipping jobs, take the time to work each job, and then come talk to me.

I'm a current employee at starbucks, and i've got my two cents on this tipping thing- first off- tipping for a cup of coffee, yeah, i don't expect that.. all i did was turn around and pull a spout and filled your cup with some brewed coffee... not that difficult. the time when you should tip- when i have to make your complex drink, you know who you are... the triple-shot venti 3pump vanilla soy no-foam with whip caramel macchiato.... if your drink order has more than 2 modifiers, yeah.. tip.. even if its just 23 cents in change you got back.. thats all i expect.. and yes, the tip jar is at the register- but those tips get collected and distributed to every partner on the floor, not just the ringer (Who, at most stores, is often the newest partner) as for someone's rebuttle who talked about tipping for "Extraordinary" service.... starbucks has a philosphy, to create enthusiastically satisfied customers, all of the time..so every single visit at your local bux *should* be extraordinary! (sometimes its not though.. i've been to other stores around me, and i know from first hand experiences that we do have some jerks that work for us...) but if you come to a store like mine, you WILL have an extraordinary visit... *a side note on tipping- the older stores and some new espresso shops still use the old-fashioned "portafilter" designed espresso machines, you know, the kind where you have to grind the coffee, dose it out into the metal-holder, and tamp it down all by hand? that was VERY complicated and even a change in the stores atmostphere could throw off the timing of the shots... so, back in those days, the tipping was REALLY expected, because it was an art form.. and as for a 4 dollar cup of coffee- please get your facts straight- if your ordering brewed coffee, your going to be paying between 1.65-1.95 thats it.. if your ordering an espresso based beverage (you know, like a latte, or a mocha) then its going to be more expensive since there is more labor put into it... so please don't say 4 dollar cup of coffee... thats kinda insulting... well thanks for reading! tommy

I had a bad Starbucks habit myself. I broke it about 3 years ago. I purchased on average 5 venti drips per day. A cost of approximately $10. There was the cost factor, but what finally broke me of the habit was waiting in line like an idiot with other idiots. I started to walk out every time there was a line going out the door. I now laugh when I see a bunch of sheep waiting 20 minutes to hand over 5 bucks for fifty cents worth of espresso, milk and ice thrown in a dirty blender. I also remember that they used to sell Crystal Geyser bottles of water for 2 bucks. The same bottles sold at the Trader Joes for 29 cents. Just get a real good coffee maker, and select premium roasts. Instead of 70 bucks a week, I now spend less than 10 for top of the line coffee, and no wait And BTW Chip, contaminating a customers drink is a felony in most civilized states. I'm not sure if Indiana meets that criteria.

So, you'll contaminate someone's drink because they don't tip you each time you do your job? Great. How about guys like me? I don't give you jack-squat before I leave. Then, after you ring up my bill, I leave your tip on the card. Or sometimes, I pay cash, and leave the tip after I'm done drinking. It may be after the 1st Stout, or it may be after the last, hours later. I tip very well, and I can go to any bar in 3 states and be recognized, and called by name, by the bar-tender on duty. I catch you doing something stupid to my drink, your employer will be looking for a new bar-tender. You'll be looking for your medical card. Bail is cheap. I'd be home before you hit the E.R. Now, on to the subject at hand. There's a huge difference netween a bar tender and a coffee pourer(barista) at Starbucks. There's also a difference between a $5 alcoholic drink, and a $5 cup of Java. I cannot make my own booze for $5. But, I can bew about 10 gallons of coffee for $5. I have a niece who got evicted. Why? Because she spent $10-$15 every day at Starbucks. She couldn't pay her rent. No rent money, but she sure did look "cool" walking around with her cup of fancy coffee. Personally, I've never even been inside a Starbucks. I think the idea of a frilly cup of cofee is stupid. But, nobody ever went broke underestimating the stupidity of the American Consumer. Anyone who doesn't tip is just CHEAP. I know the kids working there are students, and need the cash. It's only money. I'll make more.

I have a full time day job, and make a great salary. I drive a nice shiny new SUV, and am closing on my SECOND home in 2 weeks. My credit is great, and I have a MASTER's DEGREE. I also bartend on some weekends because 1) I like to, and 2) the tips allow me to pay down my student loans faster. So, for those who are so smug and think they are so much better than the person serving them, and don't feel the need to tip because we're lowly service people, chances are we are better educated, have more money, and are generally BETTER THAN YOU. And trust me, when we get the no tippers, we just roll our eyes and assume they are dirt poor, wondering what the hell they're doing out anyway. And, if you come to my bar and don't tip, don't look away for too long. You never know what may accidentally get mixed into your cocktail.

Ok. I hate even getting involved but here is MY two cents. I am a waitress at a restaurant in my town. I waitress to pay for my college. I am not a "lifer" as some might suggest, I simply did not want to take out several tens of thousands of dollars in loans to get a basic education. So I work. And I work. And I work. And I get paid poorly. I make minimum wage. Exactly minimum wage. The reason I get even that is because in Alaska, you have to pay minimum to even tipped employees. Here is the kicker. This is the way my job works. I provide my own "bank" (money to make change throughout the day). Which means at all times I have to have $150 in ready money. Not too hard. I pay taxes on my sales. All of my sales are tracked under my "server ID" At the end of the year, the IRS makes me pay 8-12% on those sales. Whether I got tipped, or made anything of those sales or not. That is ON TOP OF my income tax. Which means when you do not tip me, you just cost me money. Say you buy $100 worth of food. And you don't tip because a. you are cheap, b. the cook did something wrong and you are punishing me (which FYI i have NO control over) or c. you are having a bad day. You just cost me $8. Congrats. You tipped (-$8). Bravo. Taught me a lesson huh? Actually you just taught me that next time you come into my restaurant, you are getting crappy service. Don't you people get it? I do expect tips, because when i go to a restaurant I expect to spend a minimum of 15% on tips. And that is for average service. If it is great service, I tip 20-25%. All I ask is that people tip a minimum of 10% If you cannot afford that, you should not be eating out. Now, as for tipping at Starbucks ect. I would only tip there if exceptional service was provided. i.e. they make something for me that they do not normally make. Other than that, no way, no how. Here is a short list of people that should always be tipped: Doorman wait staff cooks barber cosmeticians delivery drivers (convenience) bartenders (ALWAYS TIP YOUR BAR STAFF) Basically anyone who provides a tangible service

Starbucks should pay their employees more

I usually tip at a restaurant or at a bar. The employees work hard for their tips and usually they deserve it. Now, for a cup of coffee though? I don't think the idea of a tip should even be suggested, less required. I serve myself a cup of joe every morning at work. Where's my tip? I suggest that Starbucks being a huge and powerful corporation pay their poor employees a tad bit more, so that d**n tip jar wouldn't have to be staring at every patron's face making them feel guilty for not putting in that extra ca$h at the checkout counter. Their product is already marked up to an ungodly amount. It's only coffee people!! Man! I could use a shot of espresso right about now. Nate Phoenix, AZ

Actually Steve, I used the past tense "was" when I refered to working as a bartender. I worked to while getting an education. So, thank you, but I'm not a moron and yes, I have an education. If you had read my report more closely, I stated that I can't stand for cashier's and such to ask, no expect, tips either. I was simply stating that there are lots of people who group and stereo-type servers/bartenders into groups that "expect" gratuity. I too don't believe in tipping for bad service, also stated in my report. It's been said on this web-site that the purpose of this is mere opinion. I was stating mine. I wasn't looking to be called a moron. I'm sorry if I offended you using your name in my initial report. I'm mature enough to admit that. But in return, you also took my words to the extreme and ran with them. I never suggested some of things you stated. But as you know me so well....

You make me laugh...really!! LOL I did not knock servers..I knocked the way everyone outside of those types of jobs are asking for a tip...Did your on the job training include education? Obviously not!! I applaud those who work in an industry where tips are the mainstay...but as the guy who responded after me said..it is not to be expected for lousy service and those thinking we will just tip if it is good or bad. That is absurd!! Should every commissioned person just get their "cash" for being lousy...because we should feel sorry for them that they gross most of their income on tips or commission? We would have a lot of fat and happy cars salesman and insurance reps. So, read what I really said...I meant the other business and people popping up adding tip jars and spaces on the debit for regular things like ringing up my order or getting me my "pick up" order. Why would I tip that?? C'mon woman! Bust my a*s you say? How the hell would you know or assume anything? Assumption is the mother of all F-ups. Now grab a Lattee and bust $6 and tip the person too! That would really make me laugh more!

I personally don't have a problem with Starbucks. I have been to several between Georgia and Florida. The ones I have stopped into, I've never noticed as having a $4 cup of regular coffee. I believe it's just under $2 dollars for the basic. But anyway, the whole subject went to this whole tip thing. I don't necessarily agree with tipping the group behind the counter. They probally make at least minimum wage. I was a bartender for 2 years at a night club in Atlanta. I made (salary) $2.13/hour. I also know this is what the general public of servers and bartenders make in both Georgia and Florida. People like Steve (Tempe, Arizona) probally have never worked at a job that intelled working with the public in a very hectic situation, busting a*s for $2/hour. And then you have the other end of the spectrum who come into a restaurant and EXPECT to be waited on hand and foot..ie - Jonathan (Georgia). It is my experience that people who brag about being good tippers....AREN'T. I understand people's complaints on tipping "everyone". I for one hate to tip the Sonic girls for bringing out my to-go food just cause they wear skates. They still make at least minimum wage. And,also, people who make minimum wage don't have to claim their tips on taxes. Because people work as a server or bartender and make $2/hour, we have to claim a minimum of 8% of our total SALES (not what cash we actually made). So, that means, if you don't tip b/c your better than me...I pay those taxes on what you just ate or drink. I do however agree that great customer service is expected b/c that is your job. If I go to a restaurant and get a crappy server or bartender ignores me from the get-go..I'll tip 10%. She has to be a total B**** to get nill. In closing, reconsider your close minded view on tipping those that don't even get minimum wage. The cashiers at Starbucks, McDonalds, etc. make at least that. The server bringing you your food doesn't, and that means when nobody's in that restaurant for 2 hours, she just made $3.15 after taxes.

#16Consumer Comment

They don't "tip" there because the servers make a good living without them. This is America, and our servers work for "tips". I had a buddy take me and my family out to a restaurant once. The waiters ignored us for about 20 minutes. I couldn't figure it out, since he claimed he ALWAYS ate there. I asked him how much he tips, and he told me "nothing, why should I?" I grabbed a waiter and told him how much his tip would be(25%) as I was in charge of the party at the table. We got very good service, and my buddy was astounded. He said he never got treated that well. No s**t. He thought they got a real paycheck for doing their jobs. From then on, he tipped the waitstaff very well anywhere he went, and always got excellent service.

This tipping argument is absolutely ridiculous. As the last poster said, I seem to get hammered every place I go nowadays with someone wanting a tip. Dunkin Donuts, fast food take away, etc. According to tipping.com; Tipping is to be given when service is extraordinary or above the normal service expected. Tips should be accepted, NOT expected! The key word is EXTRAORDINARY! You should not expect a tip for doing your normal day-to-day job. I was in the UK recently visiting relatives. While waiting downstairs for the rest of the "crew" I waited in the pub and had a few pints. When the bartender gave me my bill, I gave him a few extra pounds for a tip. He looked at me like I had two heads. I explained to him that I appreciated good service, and I wanted to show my gratitude with the gesture of a few pounds. He said to me, "My mate, I was just doing my job. No one expects to be tipped here for that." He went on to extend his hand, and said something to the effect of, "just meeting you and talking to you has been a pleasure and it would be his pleasure to serve me again." The point here is that, civilized people do not expect a tip for doing an ordinary task, which they are already paid for. It has to be over-the-top. If you are my waiter and do a great job, keeping the drink glasses full, bringing my meal quickly, etc. I will routinely give you 20%. If you are slow, Ignoring, and I have to constantly ask for my water glass to be re-filled, etc., expect much less, or in a few cases nothing at all. The problem is, like most Americans, you expect something for nothing. A good portion of you has come to be lazy, apathetic, and expect the Government to give you a constant handout. I understand that the minimum wage is not keeping up with inflation and for waiter/waitresses it is even lower; but you are the one who took the position and if you don't like it get better educated so you can find a higher paying one. Cheers. CJ The evil of the world is made possible by nothing but the sanction you give it.

Here's a tip..ask once more and I will give a great tip..the tip of my boot going to your respective groin!! How annoying is it when you do take out or go to a supplement store..and there is a place on the credit or debit receipt to add a tip...?? For what?? Ringing up my purchase? HAHA! Will Visa/ Mastercard ever quit? Or is the vendors trying to pinch the 50-to 79 cents it may cost them to ring up the debit / credit transaction under $10. OMG!!! I just had a buddy make me a fresh double shot..non whipped..non carmelized..and guess what?? It tastes great..should I tip him?? LOL Oh, and it did not cost me 5 bucks...errrr...starbucks...LOL PEACE!!

I made my first trip to Starbucks last night , and while i agree the prices are steep , i will still be stopping there occasionally for a few reasons , first off , the staff was beyond friendly , i looked at the menu and told them what i wanted was a cappuchino , they asked was it my first time to starbucks , which i admitted , they then proceeded to explain the choices , differences between a latte and a cappuchino , and told me i was likely wanting what they call a latte instead . it took only a minute and me and the husbands drinks were ready , as we went to sit at a table the barista , came over and offered me a sample of a new espresso they have , he talked to us a few moments and then went back to work , our friend meeting us then arrived and we moved out to the patio , where we sat the better part of an hour and enjoyed the atmosphere . Fact is i have never had better service in my life , they called me by my name , and was patient in explaining everything to me , even though i hadnt asked ! i dont know if all starbucks follow this model but they have definitely impressed me so much i am taking another friend there tonight to show her this "oddity " in todays world ! WHY PAY A FORTUNE FOR COFFEE?

#25Consumer Comment

I buy my coffee beans green (average $20-30 for a five-pound bag, depending on type, higher for some), roast them myself, put my nice roasted beans in my mill n' brew (about $50)and we have coffee to die for, without the lines, rude people and high prices. The only time I ever set foot in Starbucks is at the airport.

About this tip thing...

Yes, baristas should get tips! You tip your waiter and all she does is bring you your food! A barista must heat the milk to the proper temp. Not too hot, not too cold. Brew your espresso in time with milk so the shot doesn't die. You can't let your shot sit for more than ten seconds without adding the milk or it's not good anymore. She must also get the flavor right and just the right amount of foam for your drink and/or whip cream depending on whether you order a mocha, latte or other drink. Now, Starbucks. Yup, they suck. Their coffee is burnt, the milk is scalded, they don't clean out their machines regularly. Just not the best place to buy coffee. So, you had to wait your turn. Oh, how sad! *sarcasm* So, people in front of you ordered drinks you don't like? Hmmmm... And I thought we all had freedom of choice! Sometimes a special drink is just what you need to give your day some lift! BTW, what a STUPID report!

People do the best they can...really. After all; they're just people like you who unfortunately aren't perfect...also just like you. Whenever I don't want to wait in line for a cup of coffee I either don't get one, or I make it at home.

Woah..I guess your barber is ridiculous for accepting that tip

This post gets more and more funny. They expect gratuity for taking our orders? The tips are divided amongst everyone, and if you think making the drinks is so easy, get behind that bar and try making 15 custom drinks at once. So I guess your barber is ridiculous for accepting that tip...or that waitress at your favorite diner? Because believe me...they do expect it.

Gratuities for coffee??? .. next, tip the cashier at McDonald's for serving up our burgers

So just because they have a tip jar out, we should be paying Barristers a gratuity for pouring us a losey cup of coffee? What's next, tip the cashier at McDonald's for serving up our burgers if they put out a tip jar? How about tipping the 7-11 clerk for selling us our lottery tickets. Even better, let's tip the gas station cashier for allowing us to fill up our vehicle with gas. I know Barristers are not paid a lot of money, but what do you expect for making coffee? By the way, I don't drink coffee. I like my morning caffein cold. Thank god for Dr. Pepper!

STARBUCKS CASHIERS

Yes, we are all aware of the slow service at Starbucks. Has anyone ever noticed that there is a TIP JAR at the Cashier ? This should be your first hint that the cashier is expecting a gratuity for accepting your order.

Good Laugh

I needed a good laugh this morning. For the life of me I can't see why in the world a person would want to go to a place like Starbucks. Bucks is right. Talk about a ripoff. I drink about a pot of coffee per day. Went there one time, $4 for a little cup of joe. I don't think so.

First of all I want to apologize for the speed of service. We are taught that customers are to receive their drink (on average) within 3 minutes from the time they wait in line to the time they receive their drinks. As far as the people in front of you, yes I make sure that every drink is served in the order that it was placed. It doesn't matter if you have four 'fru fru' drinks or just a shot of espresso. Everyone needs to wait their turn. And for the drinks that other people get, they don't order them to make you mad its what they like. We encourage people to step out of the ordinary and to try something new. Customize their drink. For the chit chat, it's the supervisors duty to make sure that whatever talking that goes on outside of work, stays outside of work. And for the wrong drink, mistakes do happen. We have ways of making it better (ex. giving you a free drink next time and your drink today on us). Ask to talk to the manager on duty if you feel that your visit was not acceptable or if it could have been better. I hope that this doesn't stop you from enjoying the best coffee around. I'm sorry as a Starbucks employee, for the barista's behavior and for them giving you the wrong drink.

Not to be rude, but I cannot believe you would file a rip off report over this. While I am sorry you got the wrong drink, you are failing to see something here. Just because you order a drink that is quicker to make than others, does not mean you should be served before people who have already been in line and paid for their drinks. You are served in the order you come in. It is fair, and it is standard. Sorry the drinks are too fluffy for you. And sorry you are deciding what drinks are "real" and what are not. Wait-You mean to tell me my Soy White Mocha is a mirage?

Not to be too nit-picky, but the name "espresso" comes from the region in Italy where it was founded. Same with names like "cappuccino." If you think it means "faster to make than regular coffee," then you might be saying "expresso," which is nonsense. However, as to the abilities of the baristas, you might be right.
