After living in Nevada for 3 decades where there is now a real unemployment rate of 25%, I moved to Central Floriduh to help out with a terminally ill parent. Needing gainful employment, I applied for a "work at home" position with Teleperformance advertised at Career Builder on March 7th because local jobs in Tampa, Orlando or Lakeland would be a minimum 1.5 to 2 hour commute every day. After looking for 2 months, this  'less than minimum wage' [based on 1968 minimum wage adjusted for inflation] Customer Service Rep position seemed to be about all that was available to me despite having an MBA from the 2nd highest rated private university in the Northeast [US News and World Report].

After sending my resume through career builder and spending 3 hours completing an 'online personality test', the Interview process prior to being offered the position also included a 'PC Audit', and DSL speed test, and after offered the position during the phone interview on March 13, I had to sign off on background check, get a drug test, sign a confidentiality agreement, have tax forms notarized, sign a statement agreeing to accept the unlivable, substandard pay scale, spend 2 hours completing their 'on line' job application and then send all the documentation to teleperformance for review in pdf format before mailing it to them.  I was 'officially' hired and told I would start work on Monday, April, 4th, 2011 at 9am for AT&T Mobility paid training class [all done online with a web cam they supply].

On March 24th, at 11:50 AM I get an email from a "Virtual Recruiting Assistant" at a Louisiana area code named "Pamela Jones" saying "We attempted to call your number at XXX which shows disconnected. [It of course was not disconnected] . We were advised of the Teleperformance Class Postponement until further notice. You will be contacted at a future date for the Training Class." 20 minutes later at 12:10 PM I get an email from another "Virtual Recruiting Assistant" also at a Louisiana area code named" Kim Lightfoot" saying: "I am gong to contact you each to let you know the status of the AT&T class."  An hour or so later I get a call from Kim falsely claiming the class has been postponed "due to scheduling problems" till April 18th, 2011 when the first email I'd received 20 minutes earlier was correct in telling me it was 'postponed indefinitely'.  So I ended up waiting 3 weeks for what was a 'nonexistent' job I was told I'd start on April 18th.

So now from the date hired, the wait time till the job starts is almost 5 weeks. Meanwhile, I don't really look for another job since I've been assured I have one by "Kim Lightfoot" that will begin April 18th. However I begin to get suspicious on the 11th of April when I find notices that Teleperformance ASD [same division I was hired into] has filed notice with the state of Florida that it will lay off 1,223 employees in south and central Florida.

So I emailed the 'virtual recruiter' who'd called me telling me the new start date was now April 18th on the 11th of April asking if the start date is still that next Monday as she had informed me. Not getting a straight answer, I had to email her back 4 times to find out from her that this job has been indefinitely postponed. Essentially meaning it's non-existent. The recruiter at last admitted the truth saying "All information has been sent to the Florida site. The class was postponed until further notice. I have sent all your information to Terrell the recruiter that is handling the hiring process. You will be contacted by him or one of his recruiters on staff.."

I've never heard back from anyone at Teleperformance as promised regarding the duplicity of their 'non existent' jobs presented to me with a bogus start date. I've encountered all sorts of of unethical, unprofessional, disrespectful and duplicitous behavior from Corporate America since I began looking for work at the beginning of 2010, but this takes the cake.  It now seems apparent that even some of the largest global multinational corporations in the world like Teleperformance originating from France and employing over 120,000 have taken the  'lower road' to the corporate greed, and dishonesty so typically seen in the sociopathic workplace evidenced in Corporate America....

Thank your for this report. I just received an email from this company with the offer to test for a work at home tech support position. I will be declining the offer. Your description of corporate America is spot on. I wish you the best, and sorry this happened to you.
