I have been taking my dogs to a groomer for over 12 years. I had to use a substitute groomer when my regular groomer was unavailable. I took both my dogs into the Dog Barber. I carried one of my dogs in since he does not get along well with others and the other "Bandit" walked in on his leash. I explained to the owner, Chris, that Bandit had back problems so bandit would not bite anyone if they hurt his back.

When I returned to get my dogs, they called me and said they were ready, Bandit was paralyzed from the waist down. When I questioned the attendant she said "He has a bad back" Now he could not walk after he walked in earlier. I immediately took him to the vet and he told me that he needed surgery but took x-rays and gave him a shot of steroids. He also told me he was in pain. The next morning I took him to a surgeon. I did call animal control and the owner Chris. He informed me calling the police would not do any good since he groomed all their dogs and they would take no action. The animal control officer informed me that with an inconclusive diagnosis that this was not a new injury and Chris said my dog was not walking steady when he arrived, there would be no action.

After a $1000 MRI and surgery the Surgeon said he had one old injury that did not disable Bandit but in addition he had another injured disk that would have created the paralysis. He said this new injury had happened in the last day and he would not been able to walk after this new injury. The entire procedure has cost me $4,000 and much pain and suffering to my dog, myself and my mother. I took my dog to the groomer after he was chasing squirrels in the yard and walking FINE and picked him up paralyzed. No one called me or even acknowledged that the dog was in need of immediate medical attention. They acted as nothing had happened.

This groomer should be shut down. After he threatened me that no police would ever take action against him since he groomed their dogs I guess he assumed it would all go away. This is not only inhumane it is criminal.

You informed the groomer of the previous injury, when you brought him in so that they would know to be careful. They are now trying to say that it was due to said previous injury that he is now paralyzed. That makes no sense to me. It's the same as I if I go to a massage therapist. I have to inform them that I do have problems with my back due to an injury I had many years ago. (That the doctor's said I can live with it, but that I'd have to inform any other doctor, massagist, Chriopractor, etc about it for their safety and my own.) And they did something that caused me to become paralysed. I'm pretty sure that it wasn't intentional. (Maybe they didn't believe you about the injury until after the fact. then it became a convenient excuse.) But someone there really messed up and now should pay for the suffering that your dog is going through.
