Don't wait anymore- not for the crooked restaurant owner or the authorities' response. You need to contact your credit card company asap and notify them of the fraudulent transaction. I would take the "belt and suspenders" approach; call now, and also submit it in writing. I think the credit card company doesn't have to recognize a phoned-in dispute as evidence of the dispute, but it should get the ball rolling for you. Most credit companies actually have a form included with monthly statements. I hope you kept a copy of the receipt. Although it would be hard for the crook to defend a $1,400 bill no matter what- that's a lot of tandoori chicken! You may ask "why do I have to do all of the work to reverse the charge?" Because the crook certainly won't do it for you. . . also, this should not affect your standing with the credit card company, unless you have a pattern of protesting charges to your account. Again the sooner the better. Someone who charges $1,400 knows it will eventually get reversed, so it may be an indication of someone getting ready to run. Good luck!
