Does Your Bank Offer Online Bill Pay?

#3Consumer Suggestion

Tue, December 19, 2006

(I hope this doesn't post twice. I wrote it, submitted it, and got a weird screen I never got before, so I don't THINK it posted already. If so, SORRY!!) I am beyond paranoid when it comes to giving my banking information or credit card information to anybody for payments. My bank offers online bill payment in which you sign up for it, then add all the people you want to pay bills to, and then, each month, I sit down and tell the bank "pay the phone co. $x.xx, pay the electric co. $x.xx", etc. Then the bank either makes an electronic payment to the company for me, or if the company doesn't have that capability, the bank sends a check, just like it was from me, but saving me having to write a check, get a stamp, put it in the mail, etc. No, writing a check and mailing it is NOT a hardship, lololol, but amazing how easy it is to put it off!! I find this far preferable to giving any site access to my bank account, or automatic billing rights on a credit card. It's a pain, maybe, to have to go and make sure you do it several days in advance of the bill's due date, and with "auto withdraw", you SUPPOSEDLY never have to worry about a late payment or missed payment. But there's a post on this site about a man who had auto withdraw set up for his credit card payment. Well, the credit card company changed his payment due date, so the auto withdraw was scheduled for AFTER the new date, and he got the late fee, increased interest rate, etc. ANOTHER frightening aspect of paying via a business's website is that, in the case of BellSouth, the telephone company in my area, once you give them your debit card number, you are agreeing that they may use that debit card number ******at any time in the future, without your permission, for any charges they deem appropriate******. I wouldn'tve known THAT if it hadn't been for a wonderful fellow BellSouth customer who responded to one of my posts on another report, and advised of this. If your own bank doesn't offer online bill payment services, I know some of the credit card companies offer it as a service. Good luck, hope this helps someone.

The Crooks Provided Better Service!

#4Consumer Comment

James, I hear ya. In my large corner of this great nation (I am talking about my estate, not the state I live in), Adelphia provided cable service. I was so glad when Adelphia was bought out by Time Warner. After what the Rigas family did, stealing like the filthy thieves they are, it was good to see the company change hands. Unfortunately, as I attempted to tune into an NFL game on ESPN-HD on my beautiful, wall-hung HDTV one Sunday night, I received a screen that told me the channel would be available shortly. Of course, it wasn't. I then had to call Time Warner Cable for assistance. Upon dialing the number, a recording told me the brief hours that customer service was available. Luckily, I need repair, which is always available. Always availabe if you have a lot of time to wait on hold, that is. After 20 minutes of waiting, I gave up any hope of having my HD service restored that evening and had to watch the game on poor man's TV, regular old cable, without HiDef. I called back on Monday, and again selected the menu option for repair service. After waiting for 14 minutes for a technician to pick up the call, I simply picked up another phone (on a different phone line, while still on hold on the other phone), dialed Time Warner Cable again, and chose the option "to order new service". One ring, and my call was answered. I asked the TWC employee what level of service I was currently subscribed, and she confirmed that included HD. So, I told her I was not able to receive those channels currently, and she sent a signal to my cable box, and the problem was solved. As much as I disliked Adelphia, at least you could speak with someone reasonably quickly. I never had hold times like I have already experienced with TWC. Take note that if I wanted to add new service (pay more money to TWC), someone was available to pick up my call on the first ring (during their limited hours of availability, of course). But when it comes to TWC fixing problems I spent over 20 minutes and 14 minutes on two separate calls, and never spoke to anyone. TWC better do a better job or a lot of former Adelphia customers will become satellite customers. Your friendly neighborhood genius,
