A Chapter 7 bankruptcy will remain on one's credit report for 10 years from the date of discharge. A Chapter 13, however will remain only 7 years from the date of discharge.

If you really did file bankruptcy 9 years ago, Transunion is allowed to report it to Bank One. Other bad marks on your credit can only stay for 7 years but bankruptcy is the exception. Bankruptcy 9 years old is not going to give you terribly bad credit, but some lenders may decline you because of it. Since you were denied credit, you have a right to get a free copy of your report from Transunion and see exactly what they have on it. Some people recommend disputing as "obsolete" items like the bankruptcy that are close to the deadline to come off. They may just remove them a few months early rather than go and verify the exact dates. None of the credit bureaus have a reputation for being easy to work with though. It is possible for someone to improperly get a judgement against you without you knowing. But in that case you have grounds to get the judgement reversed. It's a good idea to get copies of all your credit reports periodically and make sure nothing unexpected is on them.
