I moved from Portland Oregon to Denver Colorado in April of 2013.  I rented a ubox from the U-haul franchise in St. Johns neighborhood in Portland.

First, I'd like to say that the people at the St. John's u-Haul went above and beyond the call of duty to try and make up for the u-haul company.  They even showed up at my house when they got off of work to help load the ubox to help overcome all the time this fiasco set me back.

First, the construction of the box is so poor that it took four hours to get the door open and to repair the bolts that are required seal the door shut.   If I didn't happen to have a generator and a powered hack saw we would have never gotten the door open.  I paid movers to stand and do nothing while the door was repaired.

Second, after I rented the ubox I found that I had to drop it off at a different location than where I picked it up, then shuttle an empty ubox back to the place I rented it from in the first place to replenish their inventory.  Yes, by renting this box you are also promising to use your own vehicle to be a delivery person for the uhaul company.

Third, I was told that my ubox would arrive in Colorado in about ten days.  After 21 days I called uhaul to find out where my box was.  You guessed it - it's still exactly where I left it back in Oregon.  It hasn't moved.  They don't know why it hasn't moved but neither has anyone contacted me to let me know there's a problem or that they don't know what to do with it.  Yes, they know where its supposed to be shipped.  They just haven't done it.

So, I paid about $950 to have a ubox rented and delivered.  So far, the only person thats moved my ubox is ME.

No, uhaul hasn't offered anything to offset my losses at paying movers who couldn't work because of their mechanical problems or to compensate me for their logistical mistakes.

An update on this UBox thread

I'm the author of the original post on this UBox thread.  The UBox did arrive here in Denver about four days after it was actually shipped.  I called the the receiving center to arrange pick up of the box but their phones were permanantly forwarded to the national answering service.  There was no way to call the receiving site directly.

I drove to the receiver and waited 2.5 hours to get the UBox loaded onto a trailer.  Once it was loaded I noticed a padlock on the UBox door.  It was not my padlock, I didn't use a padlock.  The receiver said it wasn't thei padlock so I would have to drive the UBox to a locksmith to have the padlock removed to get the box open.  The padlock was clearly stamped "UHaul", so it was obviously installed by someone at UHaul who did not send along a key to the lock.  After arguing with the receiver they agreed to cut the UHaul padlock off.  SO, three hours after arriving to get my box I left the parking lot with it in tow.

When I brought the box to my apartment where the movers had been waiting for three hours, the bolts that hold the UBox door closed were once again stripped.  Unfortunately the Sawzall I had used to saw through the bolts before was locked inside the UBox so I couldn't saw the door open again.

I had to tow the still unloaded UBox back to the receiver's site and leave it there for one of their technicians to saw off the bolts to get the door open again.  In total, the poor contruction of the UBox required over eight additional hours of work on top of actually using the product for moving.

I called U-Haul to file a complaint and ask for a refund.  UHaul dropped the problem back on the nice people at the ST. John's UHaul since they were te first people I worked with.  The manager of the ST. John's store called the president of marketing at UHaul on my behalf about a partial refund.  He was told that UHaul would refund to me only their net profit margin of 2.5% of the total transaction value, or about $25.00.

That's right, a $25 refund on a $1,000.00 transaction that took a month longer that it was supposed to and required eight hours of my time to deal with the faulty equipment they rented me.
