Recently I had overdrafted my account at Union Bank of California. I was not informed at the time but when I called to check my account status I was more than 400 dollars over drawn.

Unsure I had dialed the correct account I quickly redialed my information and my account suddenly became 530 overdrawn in less than 5 seconds, I called to see what the problem was and the bank operator said I had accumulated this amount in only two days time.

When I inquired as to why this was I was told simply that each overdraft purchase charged me one hundred and seventy dollars.

Therefore I had unknowingly purchased some essential things, like gas for my truck and each time was charged one hundred seventy dollars extra at every gas station, atm and grocery store.

My girlfriend and relatives have told me that their banks charge twenty three to thirty dollars for overdrafts.

I am now currently 500 dollars in debt to my bank. That is money I simply cannot afford.

I used to work for UBOC and there is no way you were charged 170.00 for every transaction. Typically the NSF fee will be from 18.00-35.00, per item. Now if you had several purchases then yes you were probably charged a total of 170.00 TOTAL IN FEES. yes banks will charge per item, all banks, credit unions, wherever. Shop around, and I can almost gaurantee you will see UBOC is very competitive and you will wind up staying just as many people in your situation soon realize. You may want to consider protecting yourself by opening a line of credit to attach to the account as overdraft protection. I believe this fee is a total of 10.00 per day versus per item.- Or keep a running ledger of your account and subtract things as you do them.
