Thanks to some of your suggestions, and my auto insurance company, I'm finally getting the at-fault driver's insurance company to pay the bill. It would have been so much easier if MAMSI/Optimum Choice/United Healthcare had responded to previous phone calls and told me I had to submit the bill and paperwork to the at-fault driver's insurance company. I did get a call from MAMSI this morning, finally. It would have been nice if they had responded earlier, and this could have been solved earlier and easier.

Dear Jennifer, You mentioned 3 different company names in your letter so I'm not sure what the exact name of your company is. However I did run all 3 names as you've spelled them with the state of Maryland Dept. for Insurance website and none of the names you've listed come up as a licensed health insurance company licensed to sell insurance in the state of Maryland and you can verify that by contacting 410-468-2104. I did view some websites on these companies and I found some health saver/discount links that are not insurance and 1 link even took me to ameriplan/americhoice and there are several complaints about them on this site. I suggest you contact The Maryland Dept. of Insurance to file a complaint at 410-468-2000 or 800-492-6116 and at their insurance fraud hotline at 800-846-4069. You should also contact the Maryland Attorney General's office consumer hotline at 410-528-8662 or 888-743-0023 and their health insurance problem hotline at 877-261-8807 and contact the BBB and consumer affairs in your area. Make sure you have copies of all printed material you've received from this company as well as the exact name and spelling of the company and their address and that can be found on your policy or insurance card. Normally in a case of an accident such as yours, your health insurance company would pay your bills and then they may or may not go after the insurance company of the person who caused the accident or who was responsible for it for reimbursement. However state laws can vary on this and one of these office's should be able to answer your questions. I would not pay any bill until you speak to one of these offices and get your questions answered since the insurance company is not willing to give you an expanation. Please let us know what you find out about this insurance company.

You're ultimately responsible for the bill. You have to pay it and sue the other driver, or his insurance company. Any time you go to the hospital, you sign something that states you are responsible for the bill, even if you have insurance. Did the other driver have insurance?
