So much for supporting the small business man. We purchased our new carpet directly from the store owner, Abe Nasralla, at University Flooring. He even came out to our house himself to take measurements and sell us on how easy and painless getting new carpet would be.

On the installation day five men arrived. By ten AM the furniture had been moved out and the pad was being cut. So far, so good. Then the two English speaking members of the crew packed up and left 3 Spanish speaking workmen behind for the remainer of the day.

The first problem happened when they cut through a 100 foot phone cord that I had pointed out beforehand was running underneath the carpet. I couldn't communicate to them that they needed to replace the cord, so I had to run out to Best Buy to purchase a replacement cord. When I got back the carpet was down, and as I motioned to one of the guys what he needed to do to get my cord back underneath the carpet where it should have been all along I got an "Ay-yi-Yi" and rolling of the eyes before he finally did it. Plus, I don't know much Spanish, but I do know the curse words, and these guys were cursing me out.

They scratched up a bookcase by dragging it through a door frame, which took the paint and some wood chips off the door frame. They messed up one of our dresser drawers so that it now will not open, and we cracked it apart trying to open it.

They disassembled a large desk we have into three pieces by taking out the bolts so that they could move it out of the room. When they were finished, not only did they not put it back together as promised by the owner during the sales pitch, but the crew LOST THE BOLTS! I was trying to get the crew to put the desk back together while they were still on site, but they apparently didn't know a word of English and just started at me. Although my saying, "PUT IT TOGETHER," along with the international symbol of put-together with my hands while standing by the desk pieces should have been explanatory enough. I think they were just playing stupid.

My desk has a specialized type of screw/bolts that fit together. I looked around and found that these bolts are not sold at any of the home improvement stores. So as of now, the desk is still not put back together, and I am trying to get in contact with the furniture manufacturer to purchase the missing bolts.

Last but not least, these idiots left a blob of carpet glue right in the middle of the doorway between two rooms. We have tried several different kinds of spot remover, and this stuff will NOT come off.

#2Consumer Suggestion

Fri, December 31, 2004

I see consumer complaint, i see rebuttal, i see no resolution. As a flooring mechanic with 20 years experience in texas i hear horror stories all of the time like the ones outlined above, i am disgusted by installers who make an already difficult business worse by being unprofessional. did you inspect the job? ask the customer if there were any concerns? did you even return to the job? i am not the cheapest installer in my area, i am for the most part independent, customer direct sales and service so i take the time to speak to my customer at the conclusion of a job to address any concerns, and i have repeat business and referrals. am i perfect? NO. do i get warranty callbacks? occasionally. things go wrong, you must be professional, and deal with problems. NOTE TO CONSUMERS: you can hold final payment until the issue is dealt with, it will get the problem solved in a hurry. be reasonable, be fair, but be smart.
