Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
I enrolled in UoP for a class in May 2001. When I found out about the "Learning Teams", I dropped the class. I am a single parent and i was doing all the work while the "team" was getting the credit. I wasn't comfortable. I had until June 6, 2001 to drop the class.

On June 4, 2001 I emailed the instructor and told her I was dropping the class. She replied that I couldn't drop the class, but I could, and I did. On June 20, 2001 I snail mailed my advisor and told him I was dropping my enrollment for good. Then in September of 2001 I started receiving collection letters for a $1200 tuition. The letters asked my to respond in writing if I disputed the debt. Since I dropped the class, did not receive a grade or credit, I responded that I did not owe the debt.

I received three "canned" letters and sent three responses, all went ignored. Then in 2003 I noticed UoP as a charge-off on my credit files. I wrote to the collection office listed on the credit reports, again, ignored.

In late 2004 the name on my credit files changed to Apollo Group, and I wrote again. This time I received responses from Margreat Iacangelo that my records and claim would be looked into. YESTERDAY (now it's 2006)she sent me an email that she can no longer get to the archives and my debt still stands but I can send the 9 past letters I've written to a Finance Grievance Committee for a review, yadda, yadda, yadda.

I've had it. UoP conveiently dragged this out and ignored me and now the only verifaction they have of a debt is MY letters (which Ms. Iacangelo has taken to quoting back to me). I wrote to the Finance Grievance Committee this morning, but I'm tired of waiting for yet another run around. After reading all these complaints I contacted my lawyer and am going to see about initiating a class action suit. Anyone interested in joining me?

Keep with the site guidelines and refrain from personal insults, please. Sounds like you got the bad side of the deal at another school. Sorry to hear that. In retrospect, what would you have done differently? And please don't say, "I wouldn't go to that trash school." You probably weren't entirely informed, so next time be better informed. Anytime sales are involved and humans are involved you will get bad apples, because some are only in it for the money. Yes, sometimes people don't get to read all the fineprint, but that is their responsibility. Who doesn't know about getting a new cell phone plan and the additional fees? Unless someone just came down from the hills, it is pretty commonly known that there are activation fees, federal fees, 911 fees, usage fees, and overage fees. It's not rocket science. Nor is it comparable to education enrollment. There are no hidden fees at UoP. There are the tuition costs, which you need to know in detail, and the book costs. There are no other suprises. Ever. We really do try to help people who give us the whole story, shoot straight with us, and are willing to hear the painful truth, not just the answer they want. Sadly, people in the U.S. try harder to not accept for their own responsibilities than they do to be ethical and practice integrity. I don't make a lot of money with this company, we do not cold-call or telemarket, I am not paid on commission (which is in fact illegal), I don't get bonuses, nor do I get recognition for helping people out. I do; however, get the satisfaction of helping people find their path. That's why I help people enroll. I don't suck. I'm awesome.

So lyyyk, it is in the fine print that while they do the work and get A's, people who blow the classes off and don't put any effort into the assignments get A's as well? And it's lyk, so totally in there that instructors don't care? Sounds like a place for an easy grade. I was heavily considering going there, but decided to research it & read other opinions first. Good thing I did. I would've been upset to have wasted so much time and money. I really would have hated working hard to get good grades when other people could mess around and do just as well. It's dirty trickery when a salesman tells a customer something like, "YES! You will leave here with all of this for $24.99 a month!!!" Then, a customer gets a bill for $200. It's nice to be warned of other fees, hidden charges, taxes, & other expenses. It's called.. honesty? In the fine print or not, it's lame to mislead a customer like that. Advisers also lie to students to get them to enroll. I was told all sorts of lies at a school I just attended. Now I'm screwed out of a job and $15,000. The only mistake on my part was believing what I was told about tuition, coursework, and careers.. They even promised to help students find jobs when they finished, and that didn't happen. They were supposed to help set up resumes.. they didn't even do that. Where was that in the fine print? It wasn't. So even if you do read the fine print & do the research, you can still get screwed because someone lies. Just like in the cell phone sales business, it's all about sales. If you telling that customer their bill will only be $24.99 a month gets them to sign the contract, you do it. If telling a student they can transfer credits when they can't makes them sign up, they do it. People are dishonest, and that's where it all goes wrong. It isn't always the customer's fault. You'd be mad if it happened to you. Working in sales as well, I have learned to read the fine print below the price tag. Most people don't even see it there. It sucks. You suck.

I started attending UoP back in 2004 and just finished with my BSB in July. I'm pretty proud of my accomplishment. I also had many issues as a student and had to knock on a lot of doors to get them resolved, but they were resolved. I felt like trying to get a job with UoP because I liked the system and how they treated me, and now have been here over 2 years. I've seen and heard of many issues, some get resolved, some don't. We try to do as much as we can, and there are many policies, steps, and guidelines that we must adhere to that you all are not aware of. We have the highest accreditation a school can have and we are under constant scrutiny by the Dept. of Ed, the HLC, and the SEC since we are a public company, so we HAVE to do everything right. I am truly boggled by people who try to take advantage of the system dishonestly, who have "the customer is always right mentality" (even if they are dead wrong), and demand perfection and are shocked...SHOCKED...when things don't go their way or they are denied something. The complaints and accusations on this website are so sensationalistic and filled with righteous vindication that people think they are true and get freaked out. There are a lot of crucial facts missing from these "reports" that are probably student error, and therefor never reported. You ask why a class action lawsuit hasn't been opened, it's because the truth is not being reported accurately by the students or "consumers" and no lawyer will touch it with a ten-foot pole. If you withdraw from a class during the last week you will get charged for the class even though you didn't get a grade. You actually probably did get a grade, which was either a W(ithdraw) or a W/I (Withdraw/incomplete). Financial aid has never covered withdrawn classes, so you have to pay the uinversity (any university) for the time spent in the classroom. The policy just changed, but back in 2001 if you attended the 1st class you owed 25%, if you attended the second class you owed 100%. So, in a nutshell, you owe the money, Kimberly. This reminds me of when I worked for a wireless company and people would come in and arrogantly demand free everything and literally stomp their feet when we didn't meet their demands. Just because you didn't read the fineprint (or any print for that matter), doesn't mean "They didn't tell me that!!!!!" We did tell you and you signed the forms. Stop being a victim. Own your mistake. As far as learning teams, God knows that I went through my own frustrations with them during my 4 yrs. Work them out. Get advice from other students. Be proactive about fixing the problem. Basically, I created a charter that I brought to every new class and stated that if someone didn't participate, or if they didn't even communicate, their name doesn't go on the assignment. Actions vs. consequences. All my teammates played ball. For those who were doing all the work...way to encourage the lazy losers. They got used to it, they may or may not have gotten a decent grade, and the will continue to do it until someone puts their foot down. Why don't you all look up any other university on this site. Every single one has complaints against them. That's life. The whiners never get anywhere, while those who decided to overcome go on to success. You make your education, we provide you with some assistance with paperwork and financial aid. Own your education and quit complaining. Brian, the other employee, offered polite and well informed advice, and got spit on for his "verbiage." Since this is the internet and you are all anonymous, you get to spout your hateful diatribes under the guise of legitimate complaints. Get off your high horses. Yes, we have taken some hits with lawsuits in the past...along with pretty much every other major business in the U.S. People love to bash large corporations, so off you go ripoffreporters, just make sure you include the embarassing details of your own mistakes and misunderstanding along with the evil UoP.

I have been attending the UOP since December of 2006. At first everyone was like my cheerleaders. They were so enthusiastic about my starting at University of Phoenix. Of course, everyone has certain issues that arise, and in attending an online college, you would think that they would be a little more understanding of these issues. University of Phoenix has a STRICT policy when it comes to handing in assignments, but if there is a death in the family or something major happens in your life to where you cannot work on assignments this should be something that would be given a little bit of grievance for. No, you have 4 days from the due date to turn it in with a 10% late mark on everything. I have a child who is sick very often and trips to the hospital happen a lot. He has a lot of digestive problems and bowel problems, and my daughter also just got a diagnosis of something that is incurable. I am not stating what it is so as not to incriminate myself. I contacted my counselor and she told me that I needed to learn how to "manage my time better between my children and school" Wow, I thought, how insensitive. I give you a heads up on whats been going on in my life and that is all you can say to me. I also contacted my teacher, who "conveniently" looked over my e-mail until almost 4 weeks later when it was all ready too late. I was so far gone into the class and failing that I couldnt' do anything. I finally understood everything, but she would not give me time to try and do everything after she explained it. Your teachers are supposed to be there to hurt you. Now they want almost 3,000 from me, and I don't have that money. That and my loans and grants should have gone toward paying any failing grade that I might have gotten. I was not on acedemic or financial probation. I don't understand how they can do this to a person!!!!! it was their lack of understanding, their incompitence at reading e-mails, and their job to provide me with a solution as soon as the problem arose (which was 2 weeks into the class). But instead, they let me continue, knowing that I was having a lot of problems and said there was nothing they could do about it. Until I pay the money out of pocket I cannot go back to school. That and I called and told my financial counselor that something was wrong and I thought I was going to fail, I asked what my options were and she said "I dont' know" isn't that your job???????? If I was going to a local university this would have never happened.

I have experienced pretty much the same as most on this report. I find it strange how now matter what economic situation the student is in, everyone ends up oweing about $1600. Not everyone gets the same amount of aid. It seems to me that that shows they are doing something wrong there. I was a student and dropped out after like four classes when they told me my financial aid ran out cuz I was a level one. Whatever that means. I have been to other colleges and I never heard anything about levels and financial aid. I think its something they made up. Anyway, I would be glad to participate in any class action brought against them.

I can understand your frustration with the financial aid process. But if research is done then one would realize that UOP is accreditted by the higher learning comission w/ regional accredidation. With any school, once attending a class you can drop out at any time. But if you start to attend you will owe no matter what. I have worked in the school system for many years and played college sports at a few different schools.

First of all my enrollment counsler did not state to me how much I would be paying back. He made them look like the cheapest school and so high accredited well I found out diffrent. Second only few teachers will get back to you if you have a problem your stuck on your own. A teacher told me if I was to file a lawsuit she would vouch for me in many of the situations I have with the school. I found out also the school wants teachers to fail some students on purpose. Third my finance coucler has been changed 3 times in 2 years and when your working with one to get your loans they leave and the new one comes. Then the new one has no idea what is happening its a bunch of b.s. Now I have a balance where they said they will take it from my pelle witch they did but the money never went to my account Hmmmmmmmmmm wounder where it is. I want to file a suit againsted them big time but I have no Idea how to start I only have 4 classes to go and I am done but I want to go some where else and transfer my credits because this school is a laughing stock.

I would definitely like to be involved in this law suite. I just found out that I am 18K in the hole because of these people, and I dont feel like I have learned anything close to what that is worth. I can completely relate to what everyone else has gone through with this school. And to know that the credits are non-transferable is really devistating..... I plan to transfer to LU in the Fall, and I was really counting on my credits to help me in my degree. I feel like i have been played, and they have wasted almost two years of my life and educational time. I dont want to have to pay back this money when I have not learned anything of value. I have worked hard to build my credit and I dont need something like this to ruin it for me. Especially when I have read how hard it is for prior students/graduates to obtain a job in their field. I have read that the diplomas/degrees are worthless from there. That is really upsetting. This has caused a great amount of stress on me and I am sure countless others. It makes me so angry that everything I have worked towards is worthless. I definitely want in on this Class Action Law Suit. Please feel free to email me with any further information, or what I need to do on my side. Thank You, Marie

once a request is made to university of phoenix, they turn their backs on you. requests such as withdraw from a class or withdraw from the university. all of a sudden, the phone calls are not returned. the emails and telephone calls are ignored. the branch campus says the same thing over and over "contact your academic counselor or financial advisor. we can not help you." everything is a mystery now. they do not give you detailed itemized tuition bill. the only information showing is the amount owed. no details!!!!!! try asking for the details. it is the same as talking to a tree in the city park or standing in front of a wall and conversing with it. any questions requiring information are never addressed. you are now caught in their spider web. once they have you as a student, they quickly forget about you. their only concern is gererating revenue through sneaky means. they stall on paperwork so they can increase your cost. they know by doing this they will receive more dishonest revenue. my question is: WHO CAN HELP US FILE A LAWSUIT AGAINST THIS CORRUPT COMPANY????????????? when will legal action finally take place??????????????????? any lawyers out there still basing any of their cases on principle? we should not be at this website complaining. this is like free therapy. we need ACTION!!!!! ACTION and more ACTION. any lawyers willing to help?????????? even if the lawyer might not become wealthy, he or she will become famous. who will help?????????????

I have tried to comment to a couple posting but I did not realize I was putting in things I could not say such certain words that a child is not aloud to say and so forth. So I am trying again so hopefully this one reaches... I attended UOP and I am now having the same issue now that I am finished I owed nothing and now after six months of runaround and fighting with a finance advisor named ruthelle and a finance manager named dietra out of phoenix arizona even though I attended the columbus ohio campus I now supposably owe $1,000. I will explain in more detail when I have time to sit down and right out my long dragged out story but they have even redone my financial aid and received more money without my knowledge and later slightly heard about it, how many times over the past 2.5 years have they done this and I not know about it. I have every bill, every treatening letter they have sent me, every email and so on. Now I am trying to look at things to build my own case and go to an attorney or even the media.

I would love to join the class action law suite. My experience began almost 4 years ago when I joined Axia University of Phoenix University. I was informed that my credits would easily transfer and that I would be enrolled into the degree program within to 6 weeks. Initially I didn't bother the counselor too much but after the first couple of months I became concerned when my credits hadn't been matriculated. I called my counselor to express my concern and was told that it would be resolved by the end of the week. The following week I received the same reply. The following week I spoke to my NEW counselor whom I had to explain the entire situation. The new counselor explained that the issue would be resolved by the end of the following week as it would take a little time to learn of my situation and resolve it. This process continued for several months. I was frustrated because I was paying for and taking classes that I had already taken at other colleges. Meanwhile, my counselors were steadily changing and I was making no progress toward solving the issue. Initially I called the college on a weekly basis which turned into a daily basis. Before long the days turned into weeks which turned into months and I realized that I had been enrolled for more than a year. Finally, I had enough so I CALLED MY CONGRESSMAN. Apparently the school responds to congressmen faster than they do to the general public because I received my degree and an apology. Not a reimbursement or anything else...just an apology. Then I went on to begin my Bachelor's degree which has taken more time than advertised. I am continually assigned a new counselor that provides new information about my academic schedule. Each time my list of classes grows and I find that I have been taking ACCELERATED classes for a longer time than if I would have attended a traditional college. I am a full time student and probably will be from now until I retire. I (like many others that attend UOP) am a veteran. I am also a single father which makes online education an attractive option. However, UOP is nothing more than an overpriced business opportunity. The business traps its customers and charges them ridiculous prices for the absolute poorest excuse for an education I have ever witnessed. UOP is without a doubt nothing more than a business and I would like to see the institution have their accreditation removed. I believe UOP owes their students and the tax payers a refund. Uop owes everyone an apology and they should provide the students with a scholarship to a REAL COLLEGE of their choice. What has happened to the education in America?

I join UOP in june of 2007, since then they have done nothing but lie, take my money without me knowing it and when I contact them they blow me off. They took out student loans without me knowing, then kept raising the amoumt of the loan without my approval. When I got my pell grant they made me pay for the same class twice. When I questioned them on it and asked for a print out of transactions, they gave me gave me a copy of how much I received in student loans. Well obvoiusly I know how much that was and they did want to give me a print out because then I could prove they were stealing gov funds. in may I took FLMA and the school sent back my stundent loans to the bank. They also sent the money I sent in out out of my own pocket to the bank. When I contacted the bank to get funds back the bank told me UOP never sent back all the money. There is $389 that never got sent back. Well with my $ 200 that never got used and the $389 that never got sent back whee is it? I still owe on my class so it did go there. Now UOP claim I need to sent in more info for finacial aid. Thats a load. I'm all in for joining a lawsuit. These people need to stop getting away with this.

I am in the same boat as the rest of you. I registered for classes before they had my financial aid package figured out. Now, I owe sally mae a slew of money in addition to owing the University like two thousand dollars. I receive harassing phone calls threatening to garnish my wages and so on. These people need to be brought to justice and they need to stop scamming people out of thousands. If there is a class action lawsuit to be filed, please count me in. I will petition, I will sign any forms necessary and even travel to any court necessary. Let me know what is needed to bring these thieves down.

I have 1 more class to go but by reading all the responses, I am wondering should I consider transfering the 1 class somewhere else. I have another out of pocket fee to pay so I had to push my class back 29 days. I have several counselors and financial advisors. I have emailed them several times but they do not respond to me. I jsut recently got a new advisor. I emailed him a week ago and he has not responded to me as of yet. I was thinking of getting my MBA so the lady called me and introduced herself to me. I have emailed her several times and she has not emailed me back once. Are they that busy?

I'm a former University of Phoenix student and I have seen / experienced all of the probelms listed here. This school is corrupt it is also strange how an employee of the school is quick to respond to these issues with a quick solution.. Does UOP have some one dedicated to "smoothing over" issues I wonder. I would love to get in on a class action law suit. The advisors (Deanna Heat and Kari Atler) removed me from class.. reason unknown sent $1600.00 back to the lender (unknown why) and then this "school" is sending me to collections for $1300.00 that I did not even spend on a class. However they say it was for the last class I took...funny you cant take classes unless they have the funding paid first. If it was not why send the money back. They refuse to send me detailed information of what the charges entail. Neither could provide an explaination and constantly told me "I dont know" "Well just because." I strongly recommend that all UOP victims ... I mean former students email Law firms and tell to look at this site. There are too many complaints about this garbage school.

Brian, I have p-l-e-n-t-y of documentation, it is the school that no longer has my records becuase they drug this out so long. I have every letter ever witten to, and received from the school. There is another reason the lawyers won't touch it. I'm sure if I keep looking I will find one willing to take this on. As for instructor reprimand, when I was a student in 2001, I specifically droipped the class becuase I was carrying the load on my so called "learning Team" and I did complain. It was the lack of action on the part of the school that forced me to drop the class. My reward was a $1200 bill and 5 years of headaches. I will contact both the Department of Education and the Arizona Department of Education today and be sure if I get no assistance from them, I will be contacting you.

Tony, I apologize if you were not adequately advised of your costs of attendance. This is NOT a practice of all employees at the University. So, if it not a practice of ALL employees, are you saying that it is a practice of SOME employees? I am honestly wondering about the phraseology here. I do recommend that you go to alumninetwork.org and apply for the Alumni Network scholarship. These scholarships are worth $1000-$2500. You can apply up to six times a year. Openings are available to apply every month and the decision for awards are made in the following month. The University Alumni Association IS NOT FOR-PROFIT. If you were NEVER told about this option I do suggest you ask your Financial Counselor why you were not and ask to speak with their supervisor. I was NEVER told about this option and emailed my "collector"(AKA "advisor") of this reality. The problem here is that, since I was given no workable options and feared being charged for my next course somehow or another, I sent in my withdrawal form (faxed it actually). I am now removed from my next course...WHICH makes this scholarship business impossible...due to one of the requirements being that the applicant is a student with UOP Online...Also, if they have such expendable funding, why in the world don't they have a "hardship" fund like numerous other universities...OR AT LEAST allow payment plans of some sort??? Now, for your complaint about your instructor. You MUST bring this up with the instructor first for the lack of team participation and request for a Faculty Instructional Specialist to look into the matter. I've done this via my "Learning Team" review form and via a survey or two... This is done with your Academic Counselor. The counselors never respond with much other than, "Yeah, the teams can be a little rough sometimes..." or VERY similar...Been there, done that...Honestly, this would seem to be a recruitment issue, rather than an issue that requires students to blab on each other. After all, counselors DO look in on their student's work, so do instructors, and so would ANY applicable school employee...ANY of these parties could see the laziness and incompetence that occurs here...ESPECIALLY the instructors...who, in ALL 9 courses I had, remain MUTE in response to ANY issues related to a lack of participation...I NEVER saw a posting from an instructor that even said, "Hey, just a heads up (to use the UOP jargon) to let you all know that everyone needs to do his or her fair share here or I will fail those that do not comply." SOMETHING to indicate that these instructors even give the slightest hint of a shadow of a concern about the welfare of their students... Also, you should file a complaint with Academic Affairs of the University as well. This is to protect the integrity of your Academic record and your degree. My academic record reflects excellence as it is...I was always, at my worst, a "B+" student...With UOP's seeming lack of a grading scale...other than, "You turned it in? Here's your 'A!'" I have become a student with a 3.92 G.P.A. Considering this, how in the world would my lack of filing a complaint with the Academic Affairs department of the University in any way affect my "academic record" and "my degree?" This can be found in your Student catalog from your student website. Document everything through email communication with your instructor and the school as well as keeping paper copies of any mailed in documentation. I've done this...I will not be scammed in any way, shape or form without standing up for my rights as a consumer...and, for the record, I am not, at present, claiming that I have indeed been scammed, other than having pertainant information witheld from me, having gone to a university that may be involved with the unethical academic practice of passing students that plagiarize assignments, and having been misinformed about my financial aid's "full coverage" of costs for my schooling. I will tell you why there is a lack of participation in the class. This has to do with the integrity and seriousness of your classmates. This happens in the traditional campuses as well. Just a comment here: You're right, however the "integrity" and "seriousness" of my classmates WOULD absolutely be greatly improved IF these instructors would AT LEAST use SOME form of intervention...and DO THEIR JOBS...I mean, aren't instructors supposed to step in and advise misled students? Isn't that part of the job to say, "Hey look, I need you to do your part here. Your team, as well as your grade is dependant upon your participation." Unfortunately, you do not have the direct interaction that usually stops this type of behavior. YES you do! In the time it takes these instructors to copy and paste their anecdotes into the main class folder, they could EASILY look in on the team sections and see what's up...THEN do something about it... The steps I have provided should help you with this problem. We shall see as I await more responses from my "advisor." I wan't to see if ANY member of this organization will fess up to making mistakes or whether I'll be told that somehow or another the entire situation is my fault. Last, the University does not deliberately populate the classes with employees. Again, I must question the verbiage here: If the university does not "deliberately" populate the classes with employees; is it not possible that this sort of occurence may occur through chance? I mean, it just seems so convenient that in 9 courses there was one person per team that did the bulk of the work, while the rest of the members did next to nothing...EVERY CLASS=3 teams...3 bulk workers...one per team...I mean, this seems awfully suspect...Again, this is merely speculation, but it just seems so suspicious... Many who work for the University choose to go to the ground campuses, if they are nearby. This is due to the amount of time that they spend working at the school and they want to have focused intervals to work with. I am about to add the ground campus classes to some of my coursework because my time demands are conflicting with the Online requirements due to personal business I have back home with my parents in Texas. Yet, I am not going to give up Online work all together. I am going to utilize the Online option to supplement my coursework completion needs as necessary. A theoretical question I wish you would give some serious thought and a response to: Let's say that the courses came up a bit short on filling a class, and let's say that, due to the anonymous nature that is this coursework, more students were needed to make the teams functional...Is it or is it not possible that the school MAY be forced to fill empty spots with employees?...and these employees, due to them not really taking the courses; might it be possible that the employees might VERY RARELY attend the courses, resulting in VERY LITTLE, if any participation? This would certainly explain why there's such limited participation in the team section...as well as in the main class section...I mean, how hard would it be to be an employee of UOP and just log in now and again with some comment or another in several classes? There's NO verification that these people did the actual "assingments-write only" folder material...So, honestly, this wouldn't be too far of a stretch for a company that has a bad enough track record to make appearances on so many "bad business" sites, would it? Please respond here if you want further help to resolve you issues for funding and the instructor issues. I honestly thank you for your response, but am still at square one, currently anyway. Further, I live as honest of a life as I possibly can and value truth over ANYTHING else...So, dealing with perceptions of lies and exposing liars is something I completely enjoy...Again, I am merely stating this in general and am not claiming to have been lied to by UOP Online. I will say that a fair quantity of misinformation and dishonest practices have occurred in my presence that have created negative results regarding my scholastic advancementand have made me question this university's practices. I thank you for your responses.

Kimberly,

I have to disagree about your supposition that complaining about the instructor will not do any good. I have been witness to corrective action taken against instructors who do not fulfill their obligation to the students up to dismissal. I HIGHLY recommend that a prof be reported to the Academic Affairs department if a student's AC does not get the job done.

For your debt to the University I recommend that you contact the Department of Education and the Arizona Department of Education to investigate your complaint. The only reason I may see why a lawyer may not want to take the case is a lack of documentation... I do not agree with that and I feel that if a student is wronged that someone should help.

If you continue to get a run-around, I do not mind seeking other solutions to help you.

Sincerely,

Well, I see an "employee" has posted "tips" on how to handle one instructor, although we all know this is a problem with most instuctors. Nothing is ever did and he's kidding you if you think reporting the teacher will get you anywhere. Notice how he didn't address your financial problem with the school... which by the way is the point of this complaint.

Now for an update on my situation. The "Financial Greivance Commitee", which is a department of UofP, has found in favor of UofP. Suprise, suprise. Even though they admittedly do not have access to my files anymore. There response was "Send $1200 and this matter will be taken care of". Well, this so called "charge-off" for the disputed debt is already five years old and has damaged my credit for five years. In two years it ill be gone... so whats wo more years? I have contacted lawyers about a class-action suit but I am not getting much feedback. All the lawyers must also be afraid of UofP.

So I guess I just have to deal with bad credit for 2 more years and continue telling everyone I know not to get involved with UofP. I have already conviced 5 people not to attend UofP. Eventually the word will get out to more people.

MY BOOK...A LOOOOONG POSTING...BUT WORTH THE READ...

I too have gotten the run-around from UOP Online regarding "out of pocket" expenses. I have just finished my 9th course with the school, and after initial assurance from my academic advisor that "student loans would cover my schooling," I was going to be stuck with a $300 bill if I went on to my next class...and after further "investigating" my financial "advisor" informed me that I would have to pay over ONE THOUSAND dollars in "out of pocket" payments to continue through this academic year. They told me to get a private loan to cover the rest, and admitedly I have bad credit and no co-signers, so I KNEW this was NOT an option...but applied and failed for a few loans. I got back with the bill collector...ahem..."advisor" and was offered no further help. MOST schools tend to TRY to work with their students on financial matters...BUT NOT UOP...they see dollar signs and not academic betterment of the student. Ok, so maybe this whole scenario is my fault, due to me being shuttled through the enrollment process at lightning speed times ten, which makes it hard for anyone to pick up all the information...so, here's a more concrete reason for me to join in on a class action suit....

I CAN COMPLETELY TELL THAT THEY LET ANYONE...AND I MEAN ANYONE INTO THEIR PROGRAM...as long as they have plenty of cash that is...My last class was ridiculous...Virtually illiterate work was demonstrated and passed, plagiarism wasn't called out by the instructor...and I have proof of this...and the instructor would almost NEVER jump in and aid in classroom conflict resolution...She would type in little copy and pasted anecdotal messages now and then, give assignments, and that is all...

On "Learning Teams:" I WAS the team in ALL 9 courses! I did the papers, the PowerPoints, and everything else...with little or no help from the "team." This school passes people on the backs of actual students...and I suspect that some of the team members are simply UOP employees placed in classes to fill them out...Note that i typed "SUSPECT" there...I mean, why else would these "team members" remain so silent throughout the courses? Aren't these people allegedly there for an education...and a ridiculously expensive one to boot?

Anyway, an instructor passing plagiarized paper flies in the face of all college rules, and would seem to be the grounds for filing some sort of grievence with the board of education or some sort of higher academic authorities. It would further seem that the instructor would be removed, the students failed, and may prompt further investigations into other classes...If it could be proven that UOP Online passes plagiarized works, then we're talking academic fraud, with academic fraud there would be the basis for at MINIMUM a review of the "university's" practices...

While I come off a tad vengeful, let me be honest, this school was rather enjoyable, and I liked a lot of aspects of the classes...mostly the freedom to learn at my own pace...which is lightning fast...But, I really felt let down by the lack of leadership of most of my instructors, the lack of participation and heavy reliance on "learning teams," the virtual illiterates and grade schooler mentalities of the bulk of my fellow students, the school's lack of financial flexibility, and the general lack of communication the school seemed to have with its students when important issues arose...

A sample of a paper that was never commented on by the instructor, in class, that was a rough draft...that contained outright plagiarism...I reviewed the work...only to have a back and forth bickering session result...again with NO instructor intervention...The following paper(the final version) DOES have citation...OF NEARLY EVERY ASPECT OF THE PAPER...which is against APA rules...I am keeping in contact with one cooperative team member from that group and will do a follow-up...If they pass...this is fraud...and the paper...followed by the links to the sources...and the bickering beyond...

The Paper:

Alternate Fuel Vehicles for
Lotus Rental Car
xxxxxxx
University of Phoenix Students
COMM/210 Team x
Lisa Harris-Overstreet
March 12, 2006

Abstract
Presentation is to the Board of Directors, and the CEO, of Lotus Rental Cars. The presentation will be on the feasibility of adding alternative fuel to the rental fleet. During the presentation, pros and cons will be discussed and presented, along with tax incentives that the US Government has provided to companies willing to use alterative fuels.

Thesis Statement
Fossil fuels are being consumed more rapidly than the earth can reproduce them, causing the price of gasoline to constantly increase. Expense is not the only shortcoming of petroleum products; they are also detrimental to the environment. Lotus Rental Car is in a position to make an impact in terms of the environment and their bottom line by converting to an alternative fuel source. By converting Lotus's rental cars to an alternative fuel source, we can expect to save money by reducing the amount of gasoline purchased. The conversion would reduce the level of carbon emissions because our vehicles would not operate on petroleum products. Lotus Rental Car's services would appeal to a larger customer base and elevate profits.

In Favor of (Pro)
Skyrocketing fuel prices seem to have our nation over a barrel. This could be the crisis that tips the scale toward higher fuel efficiency standards for automobiles, reinvestment in public transportation systems, and aggressive development of renewable alternatives long advocated. (J. G., 2005)
As research shows, there are many positive reasons why America should look more in favor of finding alternative means to an end. Concerns about global warming have prompted lawmakers to unleash incentives for renewable energy. Wind power, solar energy, geothermal, and biomass fuels are all benefiting. (Port, 2005) Burning of fossil fuels not only contributes to global warming-it wastes money. Improving the energy efficiency of factories, buildings, vehicles, and consumer products would swiftly reduce the consumption of coal and oil, curbing the damage to Earth's climate while saving immense amounts of money for businesses and household. (Lovins, 2005)

Analysis has shown ways to fulfill the potential for creating clean power, preventing pollution, problems with water and air, while improving soil quality, convert biomass into methane, alcohol fuels, bio-diesel, compost and other value-added bio-products. One thing that comes to mind would be the transportation problem here in the U.S. Transportation consumes 70% of U.S. oil and generates a third of the nation's carbon emissions. It is widely considered the most intractable part of the climate problem. Despite 119 years of refinement, modern cars remain inefficient. Only 13% of its fuel energy even reaches the wheels. The solution is obvious from the physics: greatly reduce the car's weight, which causes three fourths of the energy losses at the wheels. (Lovins, 2005)
Advanced manufacturing techniques developed in the past two years could make carbon-composite car bodies competitive with steel ones. A lighter body would allow automakers to use smaller less expensive engines. The introduction of ultra light bodies could nearly double the fuel efficiency of today's hybrid-electric vehicles that are already twice as efficient as conventional cars-without raising the sticker prices. Ultra light cars could greatly accelerate the transition to hydrogen fuel-cell cars that use no oil at all. Ultra light cars can be fast, roomy, safe, and efficient. A concept five-seat midsize SUV called the Revolution, designed in 2000, weighs only 857 kilograms - less than half the weight of a comparable conventional car- yet its carbon-fiber safety cell would protect passengers from high-speed collisions with much heavier vehicles. (Lovins, 2005)
If the American people continue down this path with its current trends they will consumed 28 million barrels of oil by the year 2025. It is a financial burden on the economy, and on the Earth. Natural Gas is a cheap raw material that is provided to us with few impurities and can gravely reduce emissions.
In Opposition to (Con)
Finding a means to alternative renewable resources has its strong points, but it is hard to over look the strain that it will have on the economy. The old saying goes, it takes money to make money, and though at the end, in the year 2025 when the Earth is futuristic and the atmosphere is restored, what would have happened to the American deficit problem. Experts on both sides claim that protecting Earth's climate will force a trade-off between the environment and the economy. (Lovins, 2005) The question is; are we prepared to do that? It is unfortunate that it is a toss up between the environment and the budget. The dilemma has been and will always be how to get costs down.

Finding ways to burn less fossil fuel, cut down the carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere to slow, or prevent global warming, will increase the cost of meeting society's needs for energy services. This includes everything from speedy transportation to hot showers. Environmentalist say the cost wound be modestly high. (Lovins, 2005)
One of the problems is that of the U.S. transportation issue. It is stated that 70% of the U.S. oil generates a third of the nation's carbon emissions. It is widely considered the most intractable part of the climate problem. Therefore, the solution was said to be an obvious one, the reduction of a car's weight that would reduce carbon emission. Analysis shows that full adoption of efficient vehicles, buildings and industries could shrink projected U.S. oil use in 2025 by 28 million barrels a day. However, in a realistic scenario, only about half of these savings could actually be captured by 2025 because many older, less efficient cars and trucks would remain of the road. (Lovins, 2005) So now, the dilemma is this, a step toward the future or are we as a society just kidding ourselves.

The question arises Is ethanol a miracle or a farm fix? Before Canada ratified the Kyoto Protocol, farmers in eastern Ontario dreamed of a locally owned and operated $56-million ethanol plant that could convert corn starch into ethanol, a low-emissions fuel that can be used to power vehicles. (Royston, 2005) The controversy started when a joint study released in June by Cornell University and the University of California-Berkeley concluded that the process of converting field corn into liquid ethanol, as Seaway's plant, consumes 29% more fossil fuels than the value of the energy in the product. (Royston, 2005) A single ethanol plant can receive up to US $7.5 million in annual direct federal grants.
This summer's energy bill includes tax breaks expected to nearly double the country's production of ethanol by 2012. More than 40 new plants opened in the U.S. between 2000 and 2004, while Canada still had none. Governments can try to create an ethanol market, but international investors see green only in oil. (Royston, 2005)

With everyone seeing green in oil, it is a wonder, how the US is ever going to switch over to alternative fuels alone. Alternative fuel has its high points and would pose to be very beneficial to the environment; but stats show it would not pose beneficial to the economy, at least not till the year 2025.

Problems and Opportunities
The research going towards alterative fuel has brought many factors to light. In July of 2005, congress finally passed an energy bill that was signed by President Bush into law on August 8, 2005. (Wiengerger, 2005) This opens many new doors for developers and manufactures.

General Motors and Toyota, the two largest auto manufactures in the world, have been working together since 1999 to develop cleaner fuels for automotives. In the past year, they have been discussing how to go from experimental state to commercial development (Mackintosh, 2006)

During the research, several methods are in the making for alternative fuels. They are liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), biodiesel, ethanol, and hydrogen fuel cells. These are just a few that are currently being developed.
Business Concept at this time would be to start small satellite of rental fleet where some alternative fuels are being offered. GM has already advertising on their E85 ethanol fuel, http://www.gm.com/company/onlygm/livegreengoyellow. The news release that issue on March 9, 2006 by GM

MINNEAPOLIS General Motors today announced the immediate availability of VE85 refueling pumps to Minneapolis-St. Paul area service stations through a collaborative partnership with VeraSun Energy Corp. The collaboration is part of a broader, national GM campaign to boost the use and awareness of ethanol-based E85 fuel in the United States. The announcement was made in advance of the Minneapolis and Saint Paul International Auto Show, which will be held from March 11-19 at the Minnesota Convention Center.

E85 ethanol burns cleaner than gasoline and is a renewable, domestic fuel that can enhance the nation's economy and energy security, said Elizabeth Lowery, GM vice president of environment and energy. Producing vehicles that can be powered by this fuel is an important part of GM's strategy to reduce vehicle emissions and dependence on petroleum and GM will continue to work to promote the increased use of E85 through partnerships like this one.
The Minneapolis area will be a good start for the satellite operations. GM already has vehicles that can use this VE85. Lotus Rental Car's usually purchases vehicles from GM; therefore, to purchase vehicles that can be put into service in the Minneapolis area would be good move for the company. The startup cost could be high but with the tax deductions that the company could use save a great deal of money.
The public relation department can provide a written report to the Board of Directors and the CEO on the possibility that Lotus could set up deal with GM & Toyota to help them marketed their new lines. In the next few years more vehicles will be on the market that will offer the use of alternative fuels. Lotus Rental Car would be in the right position to take full advantage of that opportunity.
Goals & Objectives

During our research, several methods were identified for the production of alternative fuels. They are liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), biodiesel, ethanol, and hydrogen fuel cells. These are just a few that are currently being developed.

Consumer Acceptance- Implications
With the electric car becoming more of a novelty than a real alternative vehicle, the general rental car consumer will look for something else. This could be based on the fact that most electrics have a range of about 100 miles. Batteries need recharging, and that takes five or more hours. The hydrogen fuel cell vehicle could be years away from full development if not longer. The opportunity for Lotus is with the growing popularity of the hybrid automobile. The hybrid is offered by many of the major automobile manufacturers worldwide. (Cortese, Amy, 2003) Hybrids are probably the cars renters are most likely to try with actual purchase in mind. They use both gasoline and battery power, relying on each power source when it is more efficient -- for instance, the electric motor when starting out and the gasoline engine when cruising on the highway. The battery is automatically recharged and the cars never need to be plugged in.
Competition

Many of our competitors in the rental car arena are now offering hybrid vehicles. Our competitors at this time are not performing well in the advertising of these cars. With Lotus's expertise in marketing the company could gain an immediate advantage over our competitors. The largest environmentally friendly fleet belongs to EV Rental, a Los Angeles-based company with 400 vehicles. The cars are available through Budget Rent A Car in Washington, D.C., and in 13 other cities in California, Arizona, and Pennsylvania. Although the customer will have to ask specifically for an alternative-fuel or hybrid car -- they are often not advertised. (Cortese, 2003)

Recommendations
The alternate vehicle team is recommending that Lotus begin to equip its fleet with 25% of the new hybrid vehicles. The hybrid offers excellent gas mileage and comes in many exciting styles. The government is now offering a special tax advantage for the purchase of environmental friendly vehicles. The team recommends a highly visible advertising campaign with an initial rental discount. A number of rental car agencies now offer models like a natural-gas-powered version of Ford's Crown Victoria and Honda's electric-powered EV Plus (which is no longer made), or gasoline-electric hybrids like the Toyota Prius, the Honda Civic Hybrid and the two-seat Honda Insight. Going green requires perseverance: these cars are not available everywhere, and where they are, their availability is not always apparent (Cortese, 2003),

Summary, Closing
Lotus Rental Car should stay on the leading edge of this new exciting technology. Petroleum products are still the most inexpensive and readily available resource for automobiles at this time. The hybrid offers the most reasonable choice for the near future until the automotive technology offers a totally clean solution. Lotus needs to increase its hybrid fleet gradually as the consumer accepts and trust these new alternative fuel vehicles.

BEYOND plagiarism, this was a TERRIBLY written paper...again, NO instructor intervention...

This back and forth is a result of my review of their rough draft of this paper...ONCE AGIN, THE INSTRUCTOR DID NOT INTERVENE...

1. Does the draft appear to meet the assignment's criteria?

The assignment called for the team to Prepare an assessment for Lotus Rental Car's CFO on the feasibility of adding alternative fuel vehicles to the fleet.

As typed, in advice to the team regarding their paper:

FEASIBILITY SEEMS TO BE THE KEY WORD HERE AND I SAW MORE OF A REPORT ON THE GENERAL PROS AND CONS OF GOING GREEN RATHER THAN HOW IT WOULD OR WOULD NOT BE FEASIBLE TO ADD ALTERNATIVE FUEL VEHICLES TO A FLEET FOR LOTUS RENTAL CARS. THE REPORT IS VERY INFORMATIVE ON THE SUBJECT OF THE PROS AND CONS OF GOING GREEN, BUT THAT IS NOT THE MAIN POINT OF THE QUESTION POSED. TO FIX THIS, I WOULD SIMPLY SUMMARIZE SOME FINDINGS, AND CREATE A LIST OF WHAT MAKES OR DOES NOT MAKE A PRODUCT FEASIBLE IN THE MARKETPLACE. PERHAPS FOCUS ON THE COST OF EACH GREEN VEHICLE VERSES THE COST OF THE AVERAGE CARS THAT RENTAL SERVICES OFFER, FOCUS ON THE IDEA THAT INNOVATIVE VEHICLES MIGHT SPARK INTEREST IN THE RENTERS, AND PERHAPS GET MORE INTO FEASIBILITY ISSUES MORE HEAVILY, WITH LESS ELABORATION ON GENERAL STATISTICS RELATED TO GOING GREEN IN GENERALIn short, go less general and more focused

The paper meets SOME of the criteria, but is too focused on general aspects of going green and not quite as focused on the feasibility of equipping the car rental agency with alternative fuel vehicles.

2. Does it have an identifiable and reasonable organizational structure?

Yes, to a degree, but I would have preferred a more strictly traditional approach in organization where, in a main paragraph there exists a listing of sorts in regard to the exact nature of what will be covered in the following paragraphs.

3. Does it employ clearly understandable critical thinking?

Yes, pros and cons are weighed against each other well, and I can tell thorough research was applied to the work.

4. Does the essay give the reader a reason to use the information presented?

Yes, but the general coverage of why to go green outweighs the points that were specifically asked for in the topic given as a basis for the assignment.

5. Is the information cohesive with the strong paragraphs doing the work of the essay?

To be honest, I found strong points in all of the paragraphs, so the term strong paragraph seems over-reaching. Strong sentences existed in nearly all of the paragraphs, but I found few entirely strong paragraphs that influenced the work. In other words, I didn't find any totally stand out paragraphs that ruled the steps taken in the paper.

6. Are there errors in grammar, mechanics, and organization?

Yes, and they are corrected in my revision. Those left uncorrected are simply suggestions.

Team X

I totally disagree with the reviewer with regards to the first question.

First: XXX - BOLD FACE, CAPITALIZED words mean you are screaming at the recipient (extra loud?). I will not speak for my other team mates but I am offended by this form of response to our team paper that we worked so hard at.

Second: This is just what it is, an assessment. This is to be presented to a CEO or board of directors of the Lotus Rental Car Company. This assessment will be used to make a significant business decision that could make or break the company? To report on the state of alternate fuel is the right thing to do seeing there may be many in the company that do not understand. This is a research paper and the team did the research. The company needs to know the facts, pros and cons of the issues. The first review question does not ask for the reviewers opinion on what he would do, like make a list etc.

Third: Your review was rather hard and critical. Maybe you have other issues?

From me:

-- Team X, and Class

I totally disagree with the reviewer with regards to the first question.

Which is great...Everyone is free to take or leave what is intended as constructive criticism.

First: X - BOLD FACE, CAPITALIZED words mean you are screaming at the recipient (extra loud?). I will not speak for my other team mates but I am offended by this form of response to our team paper that we worked so hard at.

Being offended is your choice, but here's the truth behind why I used such a font....It really stands out against the original text and is easy for the reader to see where the original text is verses the review. No yelling intended there.

True and you guys were thorough...You have volumes of information, which left me, the reader, swamped in so much information that, at times, it seemed to stray from the initial idea of the research, which was to help a rental car service decide to go "green." All I typed, in the review, was that you needed more sales toward the point and could stand to scale back some of the information, especially a lot of the research NOT pertaining to cars.

Third: Your review was rather hard and critical. Maybe you have other issues?

No, I call things as I see them...no more, no less...I am sorry, but there's so much of that paper that was in error that I literally couldn't believe I was reading a college level paper, rough draft or otherwise. Sorry, but I am an honest man and I won't hold back constructive criticism just to keep things mellow. Would you rather read what I truly thought, improve the work and strive for excellence or would you rather I held back, you learn little, and let your grade suffer? I can't apologize for being honest...I really wasn't out to hurt feelings and I don't appreciate the "other issues" business. I put A LOT of work into your review, for the purpose of the betterment of you and your teams work...again, nothing more...and nothing less...I encourage and expect the same complete honesty when Team C reviews Team A's paper...and no matter how much I will hate the re-writing, being noticed for grammatical failures or any other such remarks; I will have to weigh their evaluation professionally and not take offense to any of the review, because I realize what these reviews are for...to show where the paper missed the mark, and to further give advice on how to fix these shortcomings...Do you see where I am coming from here X?

Them:

No XX,
I do not see where you are coming from. Your whole approach to the review was unprofessional.Your statement,
"but there's so much of that paper that was in error that I literally couldn't believe I was reading a college level paper, rough draft or otherwise". was far from being a college level review or professional respect. I believe you should turn the review process over to someone else.

I also am a truthful and honest man. You may have other issues, only you can decide that? You seem to have an issue with the UOP so do not vent on the rest of us who are pursuing their college degree. Good luck to you XX, I will no longer spend any more time debating this issue with you. If you have a problem with that, take it up with the instructor or the school.

No XXX,
I do not see where you are coming from.

So, you're finding difficulty in understanding that we were given an assignment to review a paper to the best of our abilities, and that the reviewer did, to the best of his knowledge, adhere to the format required?

Your whole approach to the review was unprofessional.

My "WHOLE" approach? C'mon now XXX, there's nothing more unprofessional than having the lack of an ability to separate constructive criticism from feelings of personal attack. As typed previously, take it or leave it, but please refrain from complaining about the methods used to review your work. Re-read my previous postings before you simply discard my efforts as "unprofessional."

Your statement,
"but there's so much of that paper that was in error that I literally couldn't believe I was reading a college level paper, rough draft or otherwise". was far from being a college level review or professional respect.

The statement was never part of the review, but rather a response to your posting making wild claims that my review was not based on corrections of errors but rather that I had "other issues" affecting my judgment. This is the ultimate case of a person not liking the message and attempting to silence the messenger rather than face up to some of the truths contained in the message. XXX, put some of this anger-related energy into something constructive, like making some of the corrections needed to bring this paper up to a quality level...or don't...whatever, the choice is, of course, yours...

I believe you should turn the review process over to someone else.

...and I believe that this is not your call. What really bothers me here is that you discard the work I've done in reviewing your team's paper. I spent literally over 2 hours on the assignment, ONLY to have you give me nothing but a hassle over my findings and suggested corrections. I understand that you dislike my review due to maybe feeling like your hard work was inadequate...I can and do relate in reflection of your discarding of MY work here...Anyway, we'll leave this decision up to the instructor, but as far as I'm concerned here, I can't believe that you're taking such an issue over a matter that you can either take or leave. These reviews are suggestions after all...and SUGGESTIONS ONLY...

SURE, I MAY HAVE SOMEHOW BEEN OUT OF LINE, I DON'T THINK SO...JUST WANTING TO HELP THEM DO A BETTER PAPER...BUT, WHAT GETS ME IS...NO INSTRUCTOR INTERVENTION WHATSOEVER...

Then it continued into their team section:

What is XXX's problem? I read our paper and it sounds great, I am a
little concerned about the length. Once it is double spaced and the
biblio. added to it, that bad boy is going to be 20 pages. But I am cool with it, if we lose credit for length I really dont care. I think we did a great job besides Alternative Fuel is a huge subject that cant possibly be covered in 1500 words or whatever out limit was.

This passage is what made me suspect "plant students." This paper was HORRIBLE...yet, that fact was ignored fully...and again...NO instrucor intervention regarding any part of this review process...If they pass with this paper...this is a crime against acadmic honesty...and perhaps a crime against UOP Online...SURELY, when the government gives aid for the attendence of a school they require that the school adheres to universally recognized order...such a plagiarism...

Anyway, email me if a lawsuit occurs...

Count me in for joining your lawsuit, too. The school sent me a bill for almost 5 grand, although I was well assured financial aid would cover it all. The school wants their money immediately, too, and I don't have it and don't think I should have to pay. This school is a big rip-off as far as I'm concerned. The classroom learning environment is a big joke.....I have not learned much through my learning teams and online postings. I'm so much in debt with this school, and now I wish I'd never enrolled.

They pretty much laughed at the level of math required to graduate from UoP.
