I also got a letter saying that I had won $437,146.20. I was suspicious as soon as I saw that they wanted $19.95 + for processing so I checked it out. There was no record of the company that I could find so I called the local police department. They gave me a phone number for a fraud prevention hotline where you can see if something is real or a scam. It was 1-888-495-8501. There they warned me that there is often a second letter with a different company name but the same address. The prize for that one is $700,000. They also said that people who send in the money (maybe even those who don't) may get a phone call explaining that there was a problem processing the prize money and to please send $3,000 to pay the cost of correcting the problem. They may send you a cheque for the $3,000 that you cash and then send to them but it will bounce in about a week and leave you responsable for repaying the bank.

Thousands of people got these letters so spread the word so noone else gets ripped off!

Any one who gets a letter stating they've won something or have money coming to them but it's necessary to send in a 'processing fee' or whatever, deserves what they get in return--nothing. Good that you didn't fall for it. A legitimate business would not stoop to these practices.
