While checking out at my local Wal*Mart, I asked the cashier to price check two Mission Impossible collector pack DVDs that contained the same 3 movies, but were packaged very differently.  It turned out that despite their different appearances, both cost the same, so I selected one.  The elderly cashier asked me to take the one I was not purchasing and set it aside behind me.

While I turned away to set aside the discarded DVD 3-pack, the cashier scanned the DVD set I choose to buy, which completed my purchase.  I paid and let vthe store. The next day, I looked at my receipt, and saw that I was charged for the DVD set twice, even though I only got one.  This is not the first time this has happened.

Several years ago it was common for items to get left on the round bag holder, when those were new.  I would get home after a trip to Wal*Mart, and discover a missing item or two.  Yet the item was on my receipt.  Is double scanning the latest Wal*Mart rip-off, or inadvertent human errors? Does it happen at other stores?  Do we all have to inventory our shopping carts and carefully read our receipts before leaving during every trip to Wal*Mart. (Good luck parents who bring screaming kids shopping).

In this case that the OP is actually the one who may have caused this.

The OP wanted to find out what the price on the two sets were?  So why didn't they use one of the many price check scanners that Walmart has throughout their store?  Why did the OP find it necessary to wait until they got to the checkout?

I would also bet that the OP didn't ask the cashier to check it in the beginning of the transaction, but probably half way through scanning the rest of the purchases.  So it is possible that the cashier had to scan both items which is the only way that the cashier is going to know the price.  Then in talking to the OP about which one they wanted didn't remove one of the ones that she did scan when she checked the price.  I would also bet that the OP was "indecisive" causing even more confusion.

The OP also should have realized that the total was higher than it should have been, because I bet this was no $1 or $2 item that is easily missed.

Then to not even look at the receipt until the next day?

As much as I avoid going to any gigantic store, including WalMart, I absolutely don't believe they are double scanning and hiding bags on purpose.  That's ridiculous on several levels.

If you don't take all your bags, whose fault is that?  Just pay attention when you're being checked out, cashiers do an awesome job under the circumstances, but out of the thousands of transactions they conduct every day, there will no doubt be an occasional error.

If you have a bunch of screaming kids you have other issues.

Use the self checkout lane. Then you can make sure you only scan things once and that you pick up all bagged merchandize.

Another solution is to always spin the bag holder to make sure you got all your bags. And you should have a good idea of approximately how much your purchase is. I'd imagine the inclusion of the second DVD set would raise the total a fair amount. Also you can watch the items scanned on the card reader to make sure what's rung up and the price. You can do price checks on scanners throughout the store.

Answers: Inadvertent. Yes. There and all stores to make sure you're charged what's on the shelf labels. When you go shopping you should be present and not on autopilot.

No Wal-Mart in the country will ever ask a customer to please set an item aside, behind you. They take the item from you and leave it for the employess that come w/shopping carts full of "unwanted at the time of checkout" items to re-stock. You mentioned that the 2 DVD packs contained the same movie(s), but were packaged differently? Yet you don't specify how or what made them differently. What doesn't make sense is you say the cashier was elderly, and in the split second it took you to "set the item aside behind you", they scanned the item twice? C'mon now...how many items did you exactly purchase? If it was just this DVD, I think you very well would have heard the scanner "beep" 2x (Assuming of course they scan it over whatever it is that they do w/electronics), and why, oh why, wouldn't you look at your receipt, if this was the only item you were buying? Let's say it wasn't though...once you walk away, stop, and look at your receipt to verify everything, just to make sure. I thought this was common sense, but I guess not. And obviously you should carefully read your receipts....again, common sense
