At one point you stated you had the money in your account to pay your gas bill, you still has a positive balance and you didn't use your card again. At another point you stated a transaction had gone through when you had no money. If you had an outstanding debit transaction that hadn't gone through when you paid your gas bill, then you didn't have the money in your account. Yes, technically it was in your account, but you forgot to subtract that outstanding transaction. Had you subtracted that outstanding debit, you would have seen you were overdrawn. Banks do not decide when a credit transaction on a debit card posts. That is determined when the merchant actually submits the charge to the bank for payment. It is not determined when you swipe your card. That merely holds the money. If the merchant does not transmit the charge within a few days, the bank will take the hold off your account, figuring it could a hold in error. However, the merchant can still submit the charge at any time. It doesn't matter when the bank puts through the transactions, or what order they are posted. If you have the money to cover all the transactions you make, you will not overdraft.
