I was fired at Werner for "Falure to progress as a trainee" after only six days OTR training! I had no tickets, DOT inspections, or anything! The training coordinator wanted to know why I didn't go with the flow while driving in Chicago, and I told him I didn't have an 85 MPH truck. They took 386 miles off my tally on line 3 and put it on my trainers log!

Concerning Werner's logging system, they are still considered to be on a pilot program, and has to be approved and renewed with Fed DOT every year. This means that Werner has to maintain every single log on file for the pilot program. This Info is contained in the Letter of Authorization that was issued to all drivers and O/O's. All in All, contact an Attorney and consult them about what everybody has brought up - Falsifying Logs, Back Pay, etc.... Go for it....Nobody deserves it as much as WERNER ENTERPRISES/DMI

another ripped off employee

yes this is a grand pooba of rip off companies!! i started with them in 05/02 and they left me in hotels waiting for trainers for months and afterwards i found out it was because they lost all my paperwork from orientation and didnt know where i was supposed to be.after training i was put oN s.e regional and treated like a bad stepchild!! the dispatchers were rude as hell, demanding the impossible and then reporting it as my fault to anything that went wrong.I was stricken with someboddy else's accident that was put on my record because someone reported the wrong truck #! after trying to defend myself to the company explaining that i was delivering somewhere else at the time this accident happened was told that they were putting this on my record and i didnt even know anything about it! my mileage was usually about 400 miles a week and i would plead with dispatch, who told me that this was a short haul division,i was only making about $125/week and lost all my household belongings since i couldnt make the storage bills.EVERYTHING I OWNED!! the final straw was when i got severly sick in my truck on the atlanta terminal and the other drivers notified the office but they refused to have the shuttle driver take me to the hospital.the other drivers felt so bad that they took me up to the E.R.,even taking me to the drugstore for antibiotics that the dr,prescribed. when i returned to the terminal that afternoon ,my dispatcher had re-assigned my truck to a new student, and the maintenance shop men were taking my belongings out of the truck!!when i asked dispatch why they told me i was no good to them if i couldnt drive and they were not giving me anything(hotel room, money adv.) if this isnt rude i dont know what is!!!

If you feel you have what it takes to be a driver, simply move to another company

Your complaint was kind of short. I'm not sure what exactly happened to you while you were in the trainer truck. But, I do know some things. First, you should show some improvement in 6 days. Your shifting should be getting better. Your control of the truck. Your ability to handle traffic. In other words, you should be learning and improving with each new day that you spend behind the wheel. Did you show that you were getting better each day? In Chicago, no trucks do 85 mph. Hardly any cars do either. I know. I ran with a company that was based right outside Chicago. Every week, I delivered to the Chicago produce market. And, every week I delivered some locals that took me into the city. I had a 75 mile truck. And, there was no way that I could run at 75. Maybe at night, for a short stretch of highway. So, telling me that the flow was 85 means you're exaggerating. You haven't been in the industry long enough to know this, but most trucks on the road belong to large fleets. And, those fleets regulate the truck's maximum speed. The most common top speed is around 68 miles per hour. So, unless you were going downhill, there's no way you were surrounded by 85 mile trucks. Even owner operators don't run that fast. For one thing, they don't need the ticket. Excessive speed is a major violation. Plus, fuel's too high. When you pay the fuel, you run slow. Besides, as a student you should only be going as fast as you can handle the truck. More like 55, tops. The last thing a student needs is to be zooming down the road and end up in a panic-brake situation. You always start slow and work your way up to speed. At least, if you plan to go on living, anyway. A rookie flying down the road is only going to get themselves killed. It takes skill to go fast. Skill and lightening-fast reactions. New drivers don't have those skills. It's normal to be scared of the truck in the beginning. You should be scared. Fear gives you caution. And, caution is the exact thing that a new driver needs to stay alive. Was your trainer pushing you to go faster? That was a mistake. That trainer must have a death wish. After 6 days in the truck, you got a taste of the life. Is this the kind of job that you want to do? If so, simply get back on the internet. Search truck driving job. Make a few phone calls. And, before you know it, you'll be right back out on I/80 behind the wheel of another truck. Maybe next time, the trainer or the situation will be better.

Automated log error is your problem?

#9UPDATE EX-employee responds

Fri, September 02, 2005

Sounds like there is a problem with Werner's automated log system, do far as your still being on line 4 (on duty not driving). I'll address that first. Get on the phone to the log department and inform them of the obvious error. If that doesn't resolve the potential legal problem, you can do what a former co-worker did. He decided to file a wage claim against Werner for the well-documented hours worked, based upon the average hourly rate Werner/DMI pays for line 4 activities other than fueling, VI's, etc. (such as unloading, office work, etc.). Since Werner/DMI claimed he was still working for them (he hadn't in several weeks), they were forced to pay him for all time shown on the documents THEY provided him. That will get their attention. On the issue of falsifying driver logs, please contact the USDOT/FMSCA's hotline at 1-888-DOT-SAFT (368-7238). You may also wish to file a wage claim against Werner/DMI for unpaid miles or wages. The trainer gets paid for your miles, so why they would commit such obvious fraud is beyond me. However, if they altered the logs, the original should still be on file with Qualcomm in San Diego showing duty changes, who was driving when, etc. Federal law requires that driver logs be maintained at least 6 months by the carrier, and Werner/DMI maintains them usually for a year for driver tax reasons.
