First purchased Whirlpool Dehumidifier Model #AD50USS2 at Lowes in 2006. Less than 1 year later (2007) it failed--completely iced up and would not operate. Whirlpool sent a replacement unit to my home instructing me to scap the old unit and not to return it to them. Replacement unit is in the 4th year of the 5 year sealed component warranty and it also failed--completely iced up as the first unit did.

After contacting Whirlpool's CSR department and finding out that they no longer make small basement dehumidifiers, they instructed me to have one of their local authorized repair centers diagnose my unit at my expense and if the problem is in the sealed components, they would send me a check for the remaining pro-rated amount left on my warranty. Every repair center I called told me the same thing--it's not worth paying out of pocket for them to diagnose because they were all sure the problem lies in the sealed unit.

Also 2 out of the 3 repairs centers I called said they do not work on dehumidifiers at all--so much for Whirlpool's referral system. Upon contacting Whirlpool again and speaking to a supervisor, I was told they would not do anything for me without a confirmed diagnoses from their authorized repair center. Bottom line, it would cost me more than the pro-rated amount I would receive from Whirlpool to have the unit diagnosed by a repair center, only to have them tell Whirlpool that the unit is scrap and has a defect in the sealed component system.

Whirlpool warranties are not worth the paper they are printed on. I feel that they should pay the repair center for ALL expenses concerning diagnoses of their defective products and NOT expect the customer to pay anything out of pocket. The "supervisor" was totally useless at offering me any resolution whatsoever. Think twice before purchasing any products from Whirlpool without first examining their flimsy warranty policies. I, for one, will never purchase any Whirlpool products again.
