"WinFixer" or "WinFixer 2005" (www.winfixer.com) and its affiliates are in the business of degrading personal computer performance using malicious software components that are installed without users' permission or knowledge.

It consists of: (a.) a "Browser Helper Object" named "MSEvents" in the form of a dynamic link library with a random filename contained in the {Windows Folder}\system32 directory, (b.) a "Winlogon Notify" process using the same file or files, and (c.) a collection of malicious registry keys to ensure the program continues to run.

This software also serves up ads that hijack your web browser to all but force you to download the "WinFixer" product, which, ironically, claims it will rid your system of spyware and other software. This is essentially the equivalent of a mechanic pouring water into your automobile's gas tank and then plastering advertising of his services all over your windshield.

This software circumvents most Anti-Spyware programs and requires either intricate manual removal of files and registry keys, or a homemade fix that can be found on the internet. Either method requires booting the computer into a diagnostic mode and a certain level of technical and OS expertise to remove.

Based on these facts, it appears "WinFixer" and its affiliates operate with a marketing strategy based on sabotage. If your computer falls victim to constant pop-ups and download pages telling you you can't go on without "WinFixer", do not fall for this scam!

Victims of these vicious criminals will be pleased to hear that the FTC has taken action against James Reno, Sam Jain, and Kristy Ross and seized their assets for distribution this malware. Reno claimed innocence but IM conversations place him directly in the middle of this scam. He even brags about going to the Ukraine to work with these cybercriminals. Lets hope they all go to prison where 'Bubba' and 'Tyrone' will teach them the nuances of prison life!
