You should have never agreed to pay for something of which you do not owe. You should have, instead, asked the caller for all available information on the debt, let him/her know that you did not agree with the debt, then immediately contact all of the credit bureaus with the fraudulent information to file a dispute. Then it's up to the credit bureaus to contact the lender/creditor and if the debt cannot be proven, it will be removed from your credit files. Filing disputes costs you nothing so keep disputing every month until you see the information has been deleted. But it's not too late to do just that! Don't let them bully you into paying for a debt that does not belong to you. The collector probably searched a database for someone's name & you popped up. Names are NOT exclusive! And if your social security number WAS attached to the credit file, you're still not limited to having to pay for the debt. File formal written disputes with the lender/creditor AND the credit bureaus. GOOD LUCK!
