Not only does 24 hour fitness rip off current members, but a new member's ability to even go to their gym on a complimentary five day pass they themselves offer to patrons. I am currently a Bally's member and was interested, dispite other bad things I heard about 24 hour fitness, in trying their gym for five days. A

As I walked into the gym the front desk receptionist at the Fontana,California location gave me a very smug and disgusted look, and honestly their was nothing wrong with mt appearence.

When I mentioned that I was interested in merely sampling the gym with one of their passes, she handed me one and said I could not work out only before 9pm and the pass was not good until I someone entered it in their computer. I umderstood this, but she further told me that I could not even start working out until I spoke with one of their counselors/trainers and a customer service representative. To even do this I would have to schedule an appointment with both later in the week as their was only counselor in the building at 2:oo in the afternoon on a Sunday, and they were booked for a day. She said this to me in a very smug and rude way. I felt like I was being discouraged to even consider joining 24 hour Fitness, and as a young African-American woman who wants to maintain a healthy lifestyle and image that hurt me deeply. I responded no thanks I will stick with Bally's and she said fine then with a grin on her face.

As I walked out I could hear further muttering from her lips in the air and feel her conceited eyes on the back of my neck with chills. I just kept walking and said to myself, all of those people I would have had to seen just to work out a measly five days at the gym. It Is Just Not Worth It. I wonder do all new gym patrons who want to become members get treated as terrible as I did!

I would like to apologize to everyone who has had the unfortunate experience of dealing with 24 Hour Fitness. As an employee for over 3 years, I watched them take over a small, family owned company of gyms, cheat their members, lie to prospective new members and employees, cut corners on every club and safety expense, and discriminate against members and staff. I am very happy to no longer contribute my time and energy to this corporate ********. Please contact any POlice Department and ask the records divison for any reports/complaints ref 24 Hour Fitness

At anytime during the contract term, a consumer may cancel: 1) If the buyer dies or becomes physically unable to use a substantial portion of those health spa services used by the buyer from the date of the contract until the time of disability;2) If the health spa goes out of business;3) If the health spa moves its facility closest to the residence of the buyer on the date of the contract to a location more than five additional miles from that residence;4) If a facility, construction or improvement is not completed by the date represented in the contract;5) If the health spa materially changes the health spa services promised as part of the initial contract; When consumers cancel for any of the five reasons listed in the contract, the health club must provide a refund based on the calculation of dividing the contract price by the number of weeks in the contract term and multiplying the result by the number of weeks remaining in the contract term. Consumers are reminded that the Oregon Health Spa law applies to tanning salons and any business whose intended purpose is to assist consumers with physical exercise, weight control or figure development.Additional consumer information is available by calling the Attorney Generals consumer hotline at (503) 378-4320 (Salem area only), (503) 229-5576 (Portland area only) or toll-free at 1-877-877-9392 or online at www.doj.state.or.us.# # # #CONTACT: Jan Margosian, (503) 378-4732 (media line only) Department of Justice1162 Court Street NE Salem, OR 97301-4096Phone: (503) 378-4400Updated: April 17, 2002

#4UPDATE Employee

Tue, April 09, 2002

I am currently an employee at 24 Hr. Fitness who had originally started working there so I could be around like minded people and I really thought it would be a fun job. As a year has passed, I have found that all complaints are valid. I like to think myself an exception because I truly go out of my way to accommodate peoples problems. I have the reputation in my gym for being the most helpful and nice person there. Please, I am not patting myself on the back, just making a point. My gym has under-gone new management and for the first time, I am seeing the worst that 24 has to offer. My manager thinks he walks on water, my Operations Manager is p-oed at the world, and my District O.M. tells people that I now work for HER. I understand that people want to try out the gym and I'd be happy to but as a frontdesk person, I cannot let this happen for the wicked management will come down on me like fire raining from the skies. I would rather have a "potential" member be mad at me then to have to endure the wrath of my managers. Yes, all the clubs will be Sports clubs, how else will the big wigs make more money? "Screw the little people" should be their motto because that is what they are doing. The gym should be a fun place to be, not a place where you have to harrass people.
