Hello People:

Right now there are a list of unscrupulous moving companies that are ripping off innocent seniors, students, and families.

They list their services on internet sites like Kijiji, Craigslist, and free classified ads. They service the Southern Ontario region.

Here is how they falsely advertise:

1. They list an ad offering moving services with a host of "free" upgrades. Examples of free upgrades are: boxes, shrink-wrap, wardrobes etc.

2. They list the price of moving with NO HIDDEN COSTS- 1 truck with one mover $29.99 per hour, 1 truck with 2 movers $39.00 per hour and so on.

3. They offer special discounts for mid-month moves, seniors and students.

4. The give a cell phone number as their company number.

EVEN IF YOU ASK ALL THE IMPORTANT QUESTIONS ABOUT MILEAGE CHARGES OR OTHER COSTS, THEY WILL STILL SCAM YOU AND TELL YOU THERE ARE NO HIDDEN COSTS-THIS IS A BOLD FACE LIE!

IN ADDITION THE FREE SERVICES THEY OFFER NEVER MATERIALIZES.

This is how we were ripped off:

Movers come on the day of the move. They request a deposit of $200 to begin the move. Once they loaded up our belongings, the two moving guys said they had to contact dispatch to "calculate" the final fees.

The movers then invoiced us double for the quoted transportation fee. An extra $40.00 over the quote.

Charged us $20.00 for each heavy item fee even though we had no furniture or appliances to move. An extra $120.00.

Charged us stair fees- $1 per stair per mover. We had two movers  and 7 stairs. We were charged $42.00 for stairs.

A Dispatch fee of $40.00

Inflated labour fees- charged us $200 for labour at the rate of $39.00 per hour.  By their own signature on the invoice they completed our move in 3.5 hours, yet we were charged for 5 hours.

Once the truck was loaded, the told us we had to pay cash or else they would take off with our stuff. I promptly called dispatch to dispute the charges and they kept hanging up on me REFUSING to discuss their flagrant fraud.

So the original quote given to us of under $200.00 for our move turned into $544.00. Remember, we had no furnitiure, no appliance, no room set up. We moved a completely packed up 1 bedroom apartment to a storage facility.

WE NEVER RECEIVED our requested warbrobes or free services offered when booking our move. I asked repeatedly if there were any other additional fees and the dispatch told us the ONLY FEE was a flat rate of 1 etra hour for travel time from Burlington. We should have paid $39.00 for travel time, we ended up paying $80.00 for travel time.

HERE IS THE CURRENT LIST OF SCAM MOVERS AND THEIR ALIAS NAMES.

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THIS COMPANY IS CONSTANTLY CHANGING IT"S NAME.

Was this a local move?

Yes this was a local move. The movers travelled less than 15 km from our apartment to our storage facility.

They did have a minimum hours which were 4. We were billed for 5 yet the movers completed the move in 3.5 hours. We had no bulky items no furtinure to speak of and no big screens. EVERYTHING was packed in plastic bins.

They charged 1 dollar per stair per mover. We had 7 steps and 2 movers. We were billed $42 for stairs. $120 for heavy items- we had none.

The quoted travel fee of $39.00 balloned to $80.00 on top of labour fees.

We were promised 2 free wardrobes- never received.
We were promised free tarps, dollies and shrink wrap- never received.

We repeatedly asked during our quote if there were any additional fees to be aware of and we were told no ONLY charge is 1 hour travel = $39.00. The two movers were also at the rate of $39.00 per hour.

We felt this was reasonable because of the short distance and small move.
All in all we were charged $344 over the original quote. We are now filing a claim in court.

#3Consumer Suggestion

Mon, October 26, 2009

I work for a moving company but not this company.  It sounds to me like this was a local move.  I know that we have specific rates for specific services that provide for local moves.  We always have someone go out to the customer's home and do a visual survey so that there are no "hidden fees."  We do charge per man hour, we do charge for stairs, we do charge for a trip charge or transporatation fee but these things are all explained when we do the survey.  However, we do not charge extra for heavy items.  We do charge extra for bulky items such as baby grand pianos or big screen tv's.  Also, we do have a minimum charge per move.  Our particular minimum is 4 hours.  Perhaps this company has a 5 hour minimum.  Either way they should have explained it to you.  One last thing to consider is deposits.  We don't ask for a deposit.  You are required by law to pay the moving company upon arrival to your new residence.  In the case of a local move, you would have to pay once the job is complete.  Cash is not your only option either.  You can pay by cashier's checks.  Our company also accepts credit cards; not all moving companies do.  Being told that you have to pay by cash should be an indication of a scam.  Did the truck have their moving company name on it?  If it was a rental truck or even a truck with nothing on it, that's a sign of a scam also.  Try to stick to reputable movers.  Do thorough research before signing on the dotted line with anyone.
