Back in mid-January, the furnace in my house went on the blink. One of the circuit breakers on the heating unit itself kept tripping.

I called A&B HVAC of Burlington, KY. Their technician clipped a meter onto some wiring leading to the heating coil. He said two sides of the three-sided heating coil were shot, and, the third side of the coil was drawing so much electricity to compensate that it was tripping the circuit breaker.

My furnace is a Heil which was bought out by another company. All replacement parts for Heil units have been destroyed by this other company, and, the A&B technician said that my entire furnace would need replacing at an approximate cost of $5,000!

It was the dead of winter and very cold, but, I insisted on getting a second opinion. The next day, while waiting for an independent technician to come, an A&B salesman showed up unsolicited to measure for a new unit and give me the high-pressure sales pitch. I chased him off.

The independent technician showed up about 24 hours after the A&B technician had come out. He ran the same tests on the heating coil and found nothing wrong with it!! He determined that the circuit breaker that kept tripping had burned out. He replaced it, and, my furnace has been working like a top ever since.

While this independent technician was fixing my furnace, the owner of A&B called and gave me another high-pressure sales pitch. I told him his technician had come into my house and--in effect--told me I had cancer when all I really had was a mild cold. I told him I wasn't paying a bill for what amounted to incompetent service, and, what might have been an attempt to fleece me for a major repair to my house that I didn't really need.

A&B has been pressing me for payment ever since, and, has even threatened to take me to court. The BBB has been NO help! I wonder how many people in Northern Kentucky have paid A&B to replace a furnace when they really didn't need to.
