We have been looking for a small travel trailer for quite some time.  When I found a 2005 Jayco Feather trailer for $2,000 in our small-town listings, I was elated.  We'd already had one "perfect" find slip through our fingers.  I contacted "Abby Carroll" via the email address she gave.  Here's what I asked her, due to the brevity of the CL ad:  Can you tell me more about this trailer, and/or send more pictures?  Also, where are you located?  When a couple hours later I hadn't heard back from her, I checked to see if the ad was still on Craigslist.  It was not. Darn, it must have sold.  But then I did hear back from "Abby," and she told me:

My name is Abby, happy to see you are interested in my 2005 Jayco Jay Feather 19H. Let me give you a few details about it. Really good shape, never had any problems with it, no need to invest money in it, flawless exterior/interior condition, has never been lived in, always maintained no leaks very solid non smoker very clean, has everything a big rig has but in a smaller package. Kitchen, fridge, toilet, shower, generator, heat and A/C, sleep 8 , 20 feet and much more. The title is legally under my name, clear and free of any liens or loans. The price was reduced at $2,000. Because of my divorce settlement, i own this camper and as a woman i don`t need it so i`m trying to get rid of it as soon as possible (that`s why i`m selling it so cheap).

If you have any other questions, or need more info and photos, please feel free to ask.

I wrote back as follows: Hello Abby!  We would like to look at your trailer.  Where are you?  We are in Joseph.  Please call (gave her my ph number).

Here's what she wrote back:

Here are the pictures with the camper http://imgur.com/a/rDWi4 . As I told you in my first email, I recently got divorced. I got a new job and moved to Saint Paul, Minnesota for a new start. The camper is already at the shipping company in Saint Paul sealed and ready for the shipping. My presence won't be necessary because I prearranged the deal with Google Wallet. The deal includes free delivery and it will arrive at your address in 3 days. You will have 5 days to try out prior to making any purchase and if by any reason you find something you don't like about it you can send it back at my expense.

If you are interested in knowing more info about how it works, I can ask Google to send you an email with more information on how to purchase it. Google Wallet will contact you shortly after they have the details with all the information that you need to complete this deal and you will also have proof that I am covered by them and a legitimate seller. If you would like to receive the email from Google will all the transaction information please reply with your full name, shipping address and phone # and they will contact you right away.

Oh my gosh, the pictures were great.  This was the perfect trailer for us, but something sounded very fishy.  I went ahead and responded, as follows:

It's hard to believe the great deal here, but we are certainly willing to pursue trying to purchase this trailer.  We've been looking for quite a while and this has everything we want.

So, here's the information you requested: (followed by my name, address and phone number).

If I am understanding your email correctly, we will not be asked to pay the purchase price until we receive the trailer.  If this is true (i.e., we'd rather not pay the $2,000 without seeing the trailer), please go ahead and do what is necessary to get the ball rolling in order for us to purchase the trailer.

Abby responded:  Thanks Allison, I will prepare the camper for delivery to your address, you will receive the payment invoice tomorrow morning with contact details, payment instructions, explaining how things work and guide you through the rest of process.

Meanwhile, we checked out scams on the internet and found some very similar scams, so I knew I was being had, but I continued to wait to see what would happen.  Sure enough, the next morning I got an email from the "Wallet Department" of Google, asking that payment be made through Money Gram Transfer.  I replied to that email, saying this:

I was told by the seller, Abby Carroll, that I "would "have 5 days to try out (the trailer) prior to making any purchase,"  emphasis on "prior."  I verified by return email that I would not pay any money before seeing the trailer.   Abby did not specify any prior payment in her return email.  Please ship the trailer (according to emails), and then I will pay for it if it's what it appears to be (i.e., a nice, clean trailer).

I have heard nothing more from the "Wallet Department."  I did, however, get an email from Abby this morning, verifying that she'd taken care of everything on her end.  Here's what she said, the payment part sure does indicate scam:

Allison, everything is taken care of, I forwarded your info and all the necessary stuff to start a case for the transaction. Let me know if you have received the invoice and when are you able to make the payment because I have started the transaction.

If you have any other questions regarding this transaction please email me or call Google at their customer support number provided in the invoice.

I advise you to tell the money gram clerk that you are sending the money to a relative or a friend because if they know that the money are being sent for on-line transaction you are going to pay fee of almost 300$. So, you will not have to pay any extra fee, at the moneygram office tell the clerk the fees are included in the total amount. This way you will save money from the fees and you won't have any kind of troubles at the money gram office.

I wrote back to Abby and said this:
Abby, yes, I did hear from Google Wallet, but I'm confused why they are wanting money ahead of time.  You told me that I'd have five days to try out the trailer "prior" to purchase.  I will not send any money for a trailer I've not seen.

Abby wrote back a couple hours later and said she understood and would cancel the sale.  She thanked me for my time.

I am so thankful I did not fall for this scam, but I can certainly see why someone might.  I makes me sick to think that they are taking innocent peoples' money.  I hope this can be stopped.  I did print the original CL ad, and also filed a complaint with CL.
