I have a contract with ADT Security Service for my building located in Las Vegas. The monthly payment is $50.64. I have had this service for close to two years. However, since May of 2004, they have been unable to get the monitoring service to work and every two or three weeks, it stops working and they send out a technician to replace a part or move a transmitter or do something and assure me it will then work but a few days later, it stops working again and we have no monitoring service. Instead we have a fast beeping on the device and we have to go to the device and push OFF every few minutes to stop from driving us crazy.

They tell us that the alarm will still go off locally but we're paying for monitoring. I could get a cheap unit that would make a local noise if that's all I wanted. I have told them repeatedly that I want to cancel the service and they say if I do, I have to pay 90% of the remaining time on the five-year-contract.

On 2/15, I called the national customer service again and they told me it had to be handled locally. I talked to Kim Humphrey in Customer Service in the local ADT office and she told me to fax a letter saying I wanted to cancel the service and not pay any penalty for the remaining months since they had been unable to provide me with the service I was paying for. For the past six weeks, the unit has been disassembled and not working at all yet they expect me to pay monthly!

I faxed the letter and then two days later, a technician called to say they wanted to come out and try a new part. I've had it with them and just want out of the contract with no penalty. They've had nearly a year to fix the problem and can't. They just try to placate me by saying they've changed something. I have placed three calls to Kim Humphrey and all I get is voice mail and she won't return calls.

This is a fraud as they should refund my money for not having monitoring service for all this time!
