Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
Boy, do I wish I had read these reviews before I undertook to rent from Advantage. If I had, it would have undoubtedly saved me from one of . . . no, make that the worst, travel experience of my life.

My saga begins with my decision to take my first "just guys" trip with my son. We'd done the family thing to Williamsburg, Orlando, and the like but, because of my daughter's school schedule, this trip was going to be just the two of us. Because of the "special" nature of it, we decided to try an exotic locale -- Costa Rica.

Now, understand, when I travel -- and I do a lot of it on business -- I plan things out pretty carefully. I read the guides, look at maps, create an itinerary, the whole bit. The way I figure it, if you're going to drop a lot of money on the trip, you don't want to get there and then have to burn your time figuring out what to do. That thoroughness makes me really question why I didn't look into this company sooner . . . but that's my problem.

Anyway, I went to orbitz.com, and searched for cars in Costa Rica. I knew I wanted a 4 wheel drive (bad roads), and I knew I wanted automatic transmission (lots of hills). Finally, I didn't want some unreliable piece of junk like a Kia, so I focused on getting something like a Jeep or a Toyota. My search led me to Advantage, which had the best price, and which promised a newer model (by picture) Jeep "or similar" with automatic transmission. Done deal, right? WRONG!!

Armed with my written confirmation, I arrived at the San Jose Airport at about 12:30. I was directed to "Economy Rental Car," which apparently contracts with Advantage. The timing was important because my first hotel was about 3.5 hours away, and you don't want to be driving in Costa Rica at night if you can avoid it. When I got to the counter, the clerk told me they didn't have my car, and had no idea when they might. More troubling, though, was the fact that he had a very rotten attitude about it . . . kinda' like, "Tough. Deal with it." I explained that I was traveling with my son, and that I really needed the car they had promised me, or something similar. Everywhere around me, people were complaining to the other clerks. Some people's reservations had been lost, some people said their cars were "junk," others complained about being overcharged. It was, in a word, pandemonium.

Well, you know, sometimes you have to "go with the flow," so I decided to wait for my car to arrive, since the clerk said it should be there "any time." Besides, what else could I do? Ultimately, after waiting for an two and a half hours (during which I tried several other rental companies by phone to see if they had cars -- they didn't), and still no car, I asked (note, I said "asked," not "demanded", since I tried to stay cool inasmuch as I was in a foreign country, and don't speak the language) to see a manager, the woman who "helped" me turned out to be even more surly than the clerk. She simply could not have cared less.

After essentially pleading with her to help us, she said that she could give us a two-door Daewoo compact, standard transmission. And, here's the best part, it would cost the same amount!! When I questioned that, her explanation was, "Hey, at least you're getting a car."

Well, I had no confidence in Daewoo, didn't want a stick (and no a/c), and from everything I'd read, NEEDED a four wheel drive, so I declined and, instead, asked for a ride back to the Airport so that I could contact some of the other companies to see if they had any cars. (Oh, by the way, she explained that, even if a Jeep were to arrive, they were the 2000 models, not the new ones pictured on the website). At this point, the manager told me that the shuttle was only for customers, and that I'd have to get a taxi. Oh, and by the way, by now it was 4:00 p.m., and it gets dark around 5:30. And, I almost forgot . . . you did NOT want to be in this area of town after dark.

Of course, during all of this, my son was alternating between being really scared, and otherwise just plain anxious. So, having been thoroughly screwed over by Advantage, we took a taxi back to the Airport and, long story short, were able to get a suitable Toyota truck with ALAMO. That's the good news . . . the bad is that it cost me $400 more than the car I had supposedly "reserved" with Advantage but, at this point, you know, "any port in a storm," so I took it.

Well, that might be the end of my story, but as John Belushi used to say, " But . . . NOOOOOOOO!!" A couple of days into my trip, my credit card was "frozen." When I called in, they had multiple charges (for amounts way in excess of my rental rate) from . . . drumroll, please . . . Advantage Rental Car. I promptly disputed the charges, and got my card unfrozen, but you can only imagine my reaction.

My bottom line is that I would sooner walk the Death March of Battan than rent from these people, i.e. Advantage OR Economy Rental Car. They broke their contract, treated my son and I like dirt, and are patently shifty. Do yourself a HUGE favor and avoid them at all costs.

Advantage Customer Service fairness dictates that I advise everyone of several things:

Thu, March 24, 2005

I want everyone to know that I've had an opportunity to speak with Ms. Hauke at Advantage regarding these incidents. And, while we agreed to disagree on some of the underlying facts, fairness dictates that I advise everyone of several things: First, Ms. Hauke was completely professional, and seemed deeply committed to finding out exactly what happened. She didn't just sing the "company tune," but really seemed committed to addressing issues of customer service. I am convinced even though we may never agree about what "really" happened that day that she cares about Advantage and its patrons and will thoroughly look into the matter. Second, Ms. Hauke informed me that, for whatever reason, Advantage never got my initial e-mails, and that is why they never responded. For what it's worth, I believe her. Indeed, as stated above, her demeanor was such that, I am sure, had she received such e-mails, she doubtless would have responded. Third, Ms. Hauke indicated that the charges on my credit card were not really "charges" at all, but "holds" placed on the card by VISA for the car and the security deposit. She stated that VISA can take as many as 28 days to have such "holds" removed. In short, Ms. Hauke demonstrated all the characteristics of a company that's committed to trying to address customer service issues. We may never agree what "really" happened that day, but I am certain that Advantage through Ms. Hauke will at least try to find out. For that, I am grateful, even to the point that and even though I've received nothing from Advantage I told Ms. Hauke I'd give Advantage another try in the future.

Really?? I must take issue with a number of your statements.

To Ms. Hauke -- Respectfully, I must take issue with a number of your statements. First, I "disperse[d my] experience through the internet" when I did not hear back from your company. I find it interesting that you claim to have called and e-mailed me. I check my e-mail regularly, and I have a secretary -- yet I am wholly unable to locate any correspondence or message from you or your company. Equally interesting is the fact that your posting leaves no way to contact you. Perhaps you would be kind enough to leave a phone number or e-mail address. I will assure you that you will then quickly hear from me, as I am most interested to hear of these "discrepancies." Let me also state that, while I am in no position to argue with your statistical analyses, the anecdotal evidence suggests that Advantage should take a serious look at issues of customer satisfaction. One need only quickly peruse any of the reputable travel sights in order to establish that tales similar to my own seemingly abound. Indeed, rather than speak in the abstract, a few concrete examples might suffice. Posted below are all of the reviews of Advantage from www.epinions.com -- not just a select few, but ALL of them. (You'll have to visit the website to get the full text, but you'll get the flavor of them pretty quickly. In fact, of the 41 posted reviews, Advantage got 1 star (the lowest) in 32 of them, 2 stars in 3 of them, 1 reviewer gave them 3 stars, and 5 reviewers gave them 5 stars (interestingly, ALL of the 5 star experiences involved rentals in the United States)). Cons: Ridiculously inefficient check-in and wrong address in CO Springs. I just rented a car from Advantage for one day with pick-up at Denver airport and drop-off in Colorado Springs. It took 2 hours from the time we started waiting for the van until we were in our rental car. Granted, it was Xmas week, but their process for getting your car is the slowest and stupidest I have ever seen. Advantage should spend ten minutes studying how the other car rental companies do it and change their operation. When we tried to return the car in Colorado Springs, we followed carefully downloaded Mapquest directions to their published address: the Radisson Inn at 2540 S. Academy. Only problem is, there is NO Radisson at that address. And the tiny rental office is in a strip mall behind a tire place that cannot be seen from the road. So we spent 45 minutes driving back and forth, looking for a nonexistent Radisson and calling Advantage for useless directions. We finally found it by calling the Radisson, which is located elsewhere, and they solved the problem for us very quickly. All in all, we ended up being 2.5 hours late thanks to Advantage's poor service and WRONG INFORMATION. -------------------------------- Advantage Rent A Car Fraud by drude1,Jan 28 '04 (Show) Pros: Cheap Initial Bill Cons: Pay Much More Later in Time and Money I rented a car for a week from Advantage because the price was substantially lower than the competition. In the time I had the car I was in a small hail storm. The car sustained one, very small dent on the roof. It was only visible from just the right angle. The personnel at Advantage admitted it was something that they wouldn't even pursue had I not notified them earlier of the damage. It was clearly minor but I wanted to demonstrate integrity (in the big as well as small things) in front on my kids by disclosing it. I was more than happy to pay for the damage (less than $100 in my experience w/paintless repair companies). I just got a bill for $8,056.95. I took pictures thankfully so I will fight this but be it a warning to all. The moral is not to sacrifice personal integrity but rather to do business with companies that operate with integrity. The added cost is worth it tenfold! ------------------------------------ Run as fast as you can from these thieves by ddpcc,Nov 18 '03 (Show) Pros: Nothing Cons: Crooks Rented a car from Advantage in Cabo San Lucas. The car was a vw bug. When I arrived, the car had the hood (trunk?) raised and the lot person made a big deal of noticing the car did not have a spare. Since there was not a lock on the hood/trunk I told him to forget the spare. They would not allow it to leave without a spare. I said fine, note on my paperwork there is no lock and that I will not be responsible for any missing spare. They supposably did that but it was in Spanish so how the hell do I know? I returned it a week later and viola, no spare! They would not let me leave unless I paid $200 for the "missing" spare. I learned later this is an ongoing scam with Advantage in Cabo. They have a crew that roams the streets at night looking for their rentals. They will then "steal" the spare and accuse you of being negligent. I wrote Advantage and they never responded. The only way companies like this will learn is to put them out business. Heed the warnings! ---------------------------------------- Never, never rent from them by noadvantage,Feb 23 '05 (Show) Pros: none Cons: You may be in an airport at 9 pm without a car Had a car reservation, confirmation number and got in line. Got to the counter and they said sorry we don't have a car for you. I couldn't believe it and spoke to a manager that had never heard of customer service. Went to Avis and got a car right away. Guy behind me in line nearly went insane and they gave him a car. They do not post this policy in the Orbitz materials that you receive upon confirmation. ------------------------------------ HORRIBLE.. A Shady Operation by jlu_68,Aug 24 '04 (Show) Pros: Price Cons: Customer Service is Non Existent Car was filthy, and smelled. It had 30k miles and needed a tune up. Brakes needed to be replaced because pads were worn down to the metal. Unfortunately, I was in Las Vegas at the time and you have no office there. I lost 1 day of vacation time waiting for the repairs to be completed, plus paid for the repairs out of my own pocket and had to submit for reimbursement. When I returned the car, the manager was not there so I didn't get reimbursed. Left a message to call me back. I call back hours later, sit on hold for 10 minutes and hang up. Call back and have an exchange with the employee there and plan to discuss this with the district manager. District manager never calls back so I call the corporate office. They tell me I cant get remibursed without presenting the invoice. I already submitted the original to the local office. I obtain a copy and fax it to a guy name Rich in Finance. I plan to follow up today. -------------------------------------- Advantage Rent a Rip-off Denver airport by captodie,Mar 01 '05 (Show) Pros: All wheel drive vehicles are helpful in snowy conditions Cons: Bait and Switch, Deceptive Add-Ons, Long lines, lousy customer service I was charged for LDW (insurance) and "highway helper" even though I specifically stated that I did not wish to have it. I was asked to initial next to the charges to DECLINE them. When I got the bill, of course they had charged me for these items ($88). I called Earnest, the manager, who said that it was a binding contract and I could do nothing about it. I called Visa to dispute the charge, but because I had initialed the items, they were unable to remove the charges. BEWARE or better yet, shop elsewhere. By the way, the line to rent a car at Advantage was 30 minutes long, while all the other rental agencies were virtually devoid of lines--what gives? ------------------------------------- Pretty Easy Rental with Substantial Free Upgrade by taxman100,Aug 17 '04 (Show) Pros: Price, free upgrade Cons: location of office is not visible from road; short delay in receiving vehicle. Rented a car for 8 days, flying into and out of Colorado Springs. The shuttle van was very quick, clean, and pleasant. I do admit the rental office is not visible from the main road, but luckily I kept directions on finding the office for the rental return. We had reserved a Mitsubishi Galant, but received a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country, as that was all that was left. We were very happy, as we considered renting a van initially, but did not due to the extra cost. The van was off-site, and while the interior was not spotless, as it had not been completely cleaned prior to rental, the stains were in the rear and only visible if the seats were stored in the floor. We put 2,000 miles on the van in 8 days, and we had no problems with the return. It was a great deal, and very much worth the slight inconvenience of being driven to the hotel where the actual rental vehicle was located. We saved a ton of money using Advantage over an other rental company. Of course, we were not operating under a tight time-line the day we arrived in Colorado. --------------------------------- don't rent from this company, you might not get a car when you get there by jimmyli2002,Feb 01 '05 (Show) Pros: it is low rate, Cons: you will not get the car, and they change the rate. I rented a car in the Toronto airport, when I got there, they told me they have my reservation, but they don't have a car for me for that day. I stayed in the airport and don't know what to do, I ask them why they don't have a car for me. They did not answer me and just told me that for that night, they don't have a car for me at all. All the cars are rented out. The manager only told me they will have a car for me the next day at the same rate. I had to rent a car from Avis for the night. the next day when I return for the car, they told me the rate had change, I had to pay three time of the booking rate. don't ever rent the car from this rental car company. if you take the car from them, be careful when you arrived, they might not have a car for you. you will have to spend five times to get a rental car from another counter. --------------------------------- Warning Will Rogers: Avoid This Company by jtimothy562,Nov 30 '04 (Show) Pros: Their web based confirmation SEEMS like a good deal. Cons: You will be charged MUCH MORE than you expect! Maybe triple. My first experience with Advantage will be my last. The confirmed reservation was for $290. When the car was returned, the agent would not close the contract nor give me the customer copy carried during the rental. The actual charges to my credit card was $471, and a subsequent charge of $597 (disputed). The local office added (without my authorization, permission or knowledge) prepaid gas fee, maintenance fee, vehicle license fee. I got a copy after-the-fact with items handwritten in. I found out today this company also filed a claim with my auto insurance carrier for some unknown comprehensive damage. There was none. (I made the mistake of giving them a proof of insurance letter from my carrier when the car was checked out. Don't do this.) I have called and written the San Antonio HQ with no response. Go to National, Avis, Thrifty, Hertz, Enterprise, Rent-A-Wreck... Be wise, You are advised: Choose any other company. ----------------------------------------- Advantage Car & Truck Rentals Mississauga by mrfascination,Mar 15 '05 (Show) Pros: Fast friendly service, great vehicles. Cons: None Back in January of 2005 we were involved in a motor vehicle accident in Mississauga, CA. We were set with a rental vehicle from Advantage Car+Truck Rentals in Mississauga by the auto body shop. The staff at the rental site were extremely helpful and friendly. They helped with with every aspect of setting up my insurance claim and offered some great advice. The vehicle they presented me was great (grand prix). When my own vehicle was ready, they dropped me off at the shop. A perfect experience from start to finish!!! --------------------------------------- Advantage is the dangerous & rip off by malageno,Oct 09 '03 (Show) Pros: None Cons: A dangerous scam that hits renters with faulty damage claims. I rented a car at Advantage's San Diego airport location and was virtually attacked by one of its employees. The person verbally abused me and berated me for almost half an hour. They also tried to claim that I had damaged their car and tried to stick me with a damage claim. When I complained to management, they accused me of doing something wrong and I WAS a frequent renter. I would never, ever, ever recommend that a traveler use this company. You might save a few bucks in the short term but it is not worth getting a bogus damage report plus a lot of abuse for a few dollars in savings. Beware of Advantage... it is a rip off. ---------------------------------- Seeing the Big Advantage by txngirl,Oct 15 '04 (Show) Pros: Nice employees, and low rental rates. Cons: Not all locations are open on Sunday. Several times I have rented a Car with Advantage. I just want to share with you the some of the pleasant experience I had in both the Tyler and Longview offices. Once I was running late to a business meeting and the Tyler office have both the paperwork and the car waiting for me at the door. The car was fueled, very clean and ready to go. In the Longview office, I had picked up the car at the airport in Dallas and was returning the car to the Longview airport to catch a flight out the evening. The staff at the Longview location not only stayed after hours to assist me, they met me at the airport to pick up the car from me. The Longview location is an off airport location. So, it was nice of them to accept the car from me at the airport. The staff member that met me at the airport was very kind and nice. I would very much so recommend Advantage to anyone that wants to save money and be treated with respect. ------------------------------ No Cars! Never honored reservation. by saveinbucks,Mar 22 '05 (Not Yet Rated) Pros: None! Pay the extra money and use a real car rental company. Cons: Too numerous to mention. Rented a car at LAX and no car! Reservation was not honored. Was left with no car and 2 crying babies. Requested a minivan with 2 carseats. None of either. Had to scramble to rent at Hertz. Advantage told me that they would pick up the difference and 2 months later I am still without the check! Avoid! Surly service, dirty offices, manager would not talk to me onsite and avoids my calls. Worst company ever. Avoid!!!! --------------------------------------- I hope that if Advantage is really serious about addressing this issue, you will be kind enough to respond to my e-mail or to leave a posting here so that I may address this matter with you directly.

Thank you for your feedback. Advantage Rent-A-Car does not take this type of complaint lightly. When a client contacts us to inform us that their experience did not meet expectations our goal is to investigate and take corrective action immediately. Unfortunately we were not given the opportunity to do so in this case. Mr. Anonymous chose to disperse his experience through the Internet and then notify us via email. We called the number he posted in the email, as well as emailed him, but to this date have not received a response. However, we were able to come up with his name and thus the rental transaction history. Because of the discrepancies we found between his account and our records, we have chosen to respond to Mr. Anonymous confidentially, provide him with our backup and hope that he will recant. Advantage Rent-A-Car services thousands of rentals daily both in the United States and worldwide. Economy Rent-A-Car has been our affiliate partner for the last 5 years and services between 1000 and 1700 customers a month. The ratio of complaints to bookings for Economy Rent-A-Car is well below the U.S.A. standard of acceptability of .3%. This is not to say we do not wrest importance from any given individual's experience. However, if this experience were the norm, neither Advantage Rent-A-Car nor Economy Rent-A-Car would be in business today. Diane Hauke Director of International Relations Advantage Rent A Car
