I've been with Allstate for 9 years, 3 years under my parents and the past 6 on my own. My monthly premium was at $130 and has been set up to auto-pay. I discovered a 2 weeks ago that they raised my monthly payment to $195 with no notice and they had withdrawn 1 payment of that much the previous month and were set to do so for the current month the next day. I immediately called the 1800 number to ask why. The lady that answered the phone couldn't help me other than to cancel the scheduled auto-pay. She transfered me to a different lady in their customer retention department who informed me that there was nothing she could do when I told her that I didn't have an extra $65 in my monthly budget to pay the ridiculous increase that no one had an explanation for. Her response was "oh well if you can't pay within 7 days we will send you a notice saying you have 10 days to pay before your account is cancelled". Which I still haven't received by the way. I did some research into my account on my own and found out I had been switched to the state required minimum coverage and was shocked that they were going to charge me $195 a month for that. Especially when I have no tickets, no accidents, and no claims with them. I started shopping around and was even more shocked that I could get the exact same coverage with Progressive for only $60 a month and much better coverage for only $110 a month. I even had a friend who worked for Allstate look at my account and she had no idea why I was being charged so much. Needless to say I have switched to Progressive and am still waiting for Allstate to cancel my account like they said they would. Again I recieved no notice whatsoever of the rate increase, because I would have swithed immediately, before they could take the first $195 payment out of my account. In fact I haven't seen or spoken to my agent since I got my own policy with him 6 years ago.
