I have yet to experience a rip-off this bad. It caused me to register here and write my story. There are countless other customsers being ripped off at this moment across Ventura County and around the city of Ojai. I don't know how much further it goes past that.

I have a 10 acre ranch that is very expensive to upkeep. We trust service providers to do thier job and bill fairly for their service or product. After years of signing large checks to Amerigas as they routinely filled our two 500 gallon propane tanks, I decided to research the bill with a closer eye.

In a nutshell, propane costs X amount just like gasoline. There are price discrepancies amongst service providers but not that large. Just like when you go to a gas station. I realized that many thousands of gallons of propane refills were being billed at $4.85 a gallon without my approval regarding any price increases. I simply figured the ranch was consuming more gas since it's so large.

Propane costs approximately $2.40 a gallon as I write this on the open market. I immediately fired Amerigas and had their rental tanks cut. They even had the audacity of charging a fee to pick up their tanks. Amerigas attempted to keep the account by bringing the cost down to market, but their gig was up. They were ripping me off to a tune of $25,000 a year. You read that right. Approximately twenty five thousand dollars each year.

If you read their yelp, you will see they do this to many if not all their customers. People simply don't know what propane costs with a competitor, so many pay and don't question.

To add insult to injury, I also now have my tanks filled to 90% capacity. Amerigas apparently filled the tanks to 60% during a fill. This created a cycle of more frequent fills and they bill for every time they come and fill you up. Another way to rip off customers.

I hope this report makes it to enough people and customers EN MASSE leave Amerigas high and dry. Their pricing practices are unethical and may be borderline illegal. We switched to AAA propane and have had zero complaints and nothing but fair pricing and great service.

Point Still Flies Over Your Head

The point still alludes you. I don't care about my misfortune. I am trying to alert others. Given the size of Amerigas, they use this ruse on countless others. I am trying to get customers to learn from my loss. If you don't have the intellectual capacity to understand the foundation of this report, then I am sorry I can't be of further service. Ask yourself exactly how you would view the business transaction if your grandmother was a loyal paying customer getting ripped off for a needed commodity. Oh yes, it would be her fault and hers alone. Good corporations have something called integrity and the duty to take care of their customers. Not take advantage of them when they aren't looking after realizing that if many hundreds fall for your tactics, your bottom line will grow exponentially.

Still not a rip-off

No, I do not work for or have any vested interest in Amerigas Oxnard.

“If a representative from the company alert me to the price changes or the price structure of their product and service, I would be inclined to say they are simply expensive”

You already admitted that you were not reading your bill when you wrote, “I decided to research the bill with a closer eye.” Every day we see price increases in the places we shop. The merchants don’t post a sign signaling us of the price increases, we can see it for ourselves.

“Ask yourself how you would feel to be forced to fill the gas tank of your car only to discover the station has billed your gas card for years at a rate of $10.00 per gallon”

I would feel like a fool for not reading my credit card bill every month. Now you’ve changed your complaint. If it’s your claim that you were “forced” to purchase the fuel then you should have filed a police report as soon as you escaped or were released. What weapon or threat did they use to ‘force’ you to purchase from them?

Charging more [by any amount] than a competitor does not constitute a rip-off. If you weren’t really forced to purchase the fuel then you are guilty of two false allegations.

Arguing that one is not being ripped off by complying to pay twice a market rate for a basic commodity is short sighted. I imagine anybody with this logic is employed by or associated with the company that is grossly over-charging their loyal customers.

If a representative from the company alert me to the price changes or the price structure of their product and service, I would be inclined to say they are simply expensive to do business with and not share my story. Since they have a proven track record across the country of subtly raising prices below their customers noses, I am forced to view them as unethical and unscrupulous. Just view their Yelp page and you will see many like me. Considering the size of my property, I simply don't have the time to babysit my service providers and make sure they are all watching out for my best interests as a loyal customer. Amerigas has been busted, and I am going to spread the word. Ask yourself how you would feel to be forced to fill the gas tank of your car only to discover the station has billed your gas card for years at a rate of $10.00 per gallon when gasoline at other general stops costs about $3.00 a gallon? You would feel confused, insulted and betrayed.

I also contacted the local news so they can share my story and we can gather public opinion over the matter. Four of my neighbors have also cancelled their service so they too can pay a fair market rate for fuel. Despite your opinion, I am just beginning to share my story.

Not a rip-off

Merchants are not required to sell their products at or below market prices so your claim of a rip-off is not valid. It’s your fault for failing to observe that the tanks were not being filled to capacity.

There was no overcharge unless the seller billed you for more than the agreed upon amount. You agreed to the price increase by continuing to pay the bill. Nothing in your report indicates the seller has done anything illegal.
