 About a month ago I completed an online form for Amica home insurance.  At that time I obviously input my home address, including the city where the home is located, in Poway CA.  About 2 weeks later I spoke to Elba Ramirez (one of their agents) on the phone to confirm the details of the quote.  Earlier this week I emailed her (no response) then called and left two messages on her phone (also no response).  Only today after numerous attempts was I able to get through to an operator (which is not easy!) and was put in touch with another agent to complete my purchase of the quoted insurance. 

Only then was I told that Poway is off limits for Amica insurance due to brush fire risk.  Never in any of the earlier interactions (web, email, phone) did this come up; I even asked this of Elba when we spoke by phone.  Given that so much of home insurance is based on whether an area is insurable due to fire or flood, this lack of important information is ridiculous.  This whole business is extremely unprofessional.

Amica has a very high rating with Consumer Reports, but this experience makes me wonder why.  Their phone system makes it difficult to reach agents, their web site and the whole quoting process misses vital information, their agents are obviously not well educated on how to use their own system to determine these critical elements of information, and, frankly, dealing with this leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I have other properties in other areas and I will not be considering Amica for any of these properties. Good job on making a new non-customer.
