When I called a year ago to inquire about their free 30 day DSL trial, I was assured that their equipment was compatible with my aging laptop - this was lie #1. After signing up for the service, I was advised by a friend to double-check this compatibility, which I did. This time (and it was literally minutes later), I was told no, I could not use their DSL service on my computer.

Naturally, I asked the AOL opperater to cancel my order, and he agreed to do so (lie #2). Well, as you can probably guess, my order was never cancelled, and after a couple of months, AOL began quietly removing at least $60 a month from my checking account. I say "quietly" because I, perhaps foolishly, was not reading my monthly statement.

When I finally realized what was happening - more than $800 later- I called to point out the "error" they had made, and to ask them to kindly return the money. HA!

Yes, I was young and foolish then, but now I've recieved an education I never would've wanted. After an eye-opening and very abusive/insulting phone conversation, I of course have learned that A. just because you have to get a confirmation # to cancel, don't expect AOL to remind you of this, B.Although you (the consumer) are probably going through this for the first time (I can't imagine anyone falling for this twice), the AOL employee does this all day, and is actually TIRED of hearing about it, not to mention well practiced at the art of the verbal smackdown.

Even though my AOL account statement (which I had to request by mail, one envelope for each month) reflects NO USAGE on my part, I have no proof that, as the obviously undersexed woman at AOL put it, I didn't simply "decide not to use it, but kept it open anyway"

True, I should have been reading my bank statements. But until now, I've never needed to - thanks, AOL!

I live in California, I'm pissed, and yes, I do want my money back (by the way, as of now, I'm STILL being charged - attempts to cancel not effective). Please give me some useful advice - I've read many similar complaints, and it's not too encouraging. Are we going to let this keep happening?
