My husband had been using AOL for his internet service....we live in an area that has only one local access number....as you know it is virtually impossible to connect with only one access number....so we called AOL on Dec 13 to cancel his service...they gave him 2 free months to stay with them....then on Feb 13 we called to cancel it again before any billing had occured. We talked to "Tony" who said if we would be patient with the service and keep AOL he would give us 2 free months...so we decided we would since he is not on the internet that much and we could probably get by with the connection problem.

On Feb 16, we get an email for payment notification.....they would be deducting the billing amount from our checking account....well I immediately called AOL again....talked to Eric and he assured me that there was no charges being taken out as we had free service until the billing date of 5-14-02. We talked in great length as to why we received the email.....he again assured me that there was no billing to be deducted.

WELL...today I find out that the debited the $28.90 from our account and since we didn't know it was being deducted we didn't have the funds there....as I don't keep extra money in the account and we were also charged with a $30 NSF....we were very upset with this.....

I called AOL and spoke to Shirley who assured me that the account says on Feb 13 we had been given 2 free months but "TONY" had not POSTED THE ACCOUNT so it was billed. All she can do is to give us the two free months. I told her this was not acceptable and I wanted a credit to my checking account for the $28.90 PLUS the $30.00 NSF charge..and she informed me that she could not do that....well I told her I wanted to know who could.....she said I would have to fax a copy from the bank stating the money was deducted and that it activated a NSF charge and describe to them what had happened.....When I asked to talk to "TONY" she had no idea who he was as when you call the billing department you can reach one of eight service centers in the USA.......Well that's a good excuse......So I have faxed all the paperwork in requesting a refund......I am also writing the Federal Trade Commission and the Attorney General to get this rectified......one way or the other....

So please warn everyone you know that if they are thinking about going with "AMERICA'S NUMBER ONE INTERNET PROVIDER" they are making the mistake of a life time.

We contacted our bank regarding the charges that AOL took out unauthorized and they put a hold on the account so that they can no longer debit money and then they filed a request for a charge back with them and we got our money back...try it with your bank...just tell them they were not authorized to debit the account and they can stop it.
